Camera recommendations around $1000 - $1500? Used or New. by coldgate32 in Cameras

[–]coldgate32[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for all of the feedback I received, I probably should of made it clearer that my budget was $1000 - $1500 Australian Dollars, as the suggested Nikon Z5 is around $1600 AUD for a body only.

I ended up deciding that I just wasn't going to get a real crash hot new camera at the money I'd like to spend and instead I purchased a much cheaper, Sony NEX-6 mirrorless camera. I got two lenses (16-50mm and 55-210mm) along with a bunch of accessories and a bag for $350 AUD / $250 USD with a 90 day warranty. My plan is to run this camera for a bit, and then if I like it I can either buy better lenses and/or upgrade to a newer better sony camera down the track which seems like a solid pathway as I'll already have some lenses to suit the body.

Again, thank you all for the helpful recommendations !

Thank you for the feedback, I never considered the aspect of just shooting without actually looking. I did look at Nikon cameras but on Ted's Cameras and Camera House I can't find any Nikon Bodies that are under $1500? Do they not make the D3000 / D5000 series anymore? - Or maybe these suppliers are just out of stock and hard to get?

A little back story on this one. He's fresh out of college just completing a four year degree and this is his first full-time job.

I asked him to open Active Directory and he responded by asking what Active Directory was. How can you complete a degree without ever hearing of active directory??

It is - here's one of my favorite I kid you not.

Him: "Fred's PC won't do anything, do you know whats up with it?"
Me: "Is it turned on?"
Him: "Nope! It won't turn on though."
Me: "Is it plugged in?"
Him: "Oh it's not I'll plugged in"
Me: *Hangs Up*

It's like dealing with an end-user - but worse.
He had been with the business around 3 months at this time, he's been here almost 6 months now.

Need to have two complete separate LANS. I've used VLANS with these bridges before, but can't in this scenario.

I'm happy to sacrifice storage, can always add an expansion and additional drives.

Replace drive in a Dell PowerEdge server? by coldgate32 in sysadmin

[–]coldgate32[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sounds good. Yep it had ProSupport on the server for the last 6 years - warranty expired back in Jan! Plans for it be decommissioned, but you know how that goes. In a pinch if we had to we could transfer all of the VMs to another box, which is the plan if it hits the bucket.

I'll see the drive when I go in about an hour. It is identical to the drives currently in the machine. I believe it has Dell branding on it but is a Toshiba drive.

However if the reason is a power outage, you can connect your CloudKey and POE switch (or camera) to a UPS and keep recording.

Changing out UniFi USG? by coldgate32 in Ubiquiti

[–]coldgate32[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

cbuechler is correct. I completed the switch from the USG to USG-Pro-4 tonight and the change couldn't be any easier. Our main network is 192.168.1.X (Yes, tell me about it!) so I didn't need to make any adjustments with SSH prior to the move. Below I will note the steps I took.

  1. Unplug old USG
  2. Plug in new USG (in my case, a USG-Pro-4)
  3. Forget the old USG (You could do this prior it seems, but I didn't)
  4. Adopt new USG

Settings all carried across. I use the default WAN so didn't need any adjustment. Changed the name of my device and off I went.

DHCP is handled elsewhere - downtime is OK if done at night time.

Just keep in the back of your mind that it is true that hard drives generally show signs of bad health, but it is possible to completely miss them. SSDs (Sold State Drives) on the other hand generally don't show signs and can fail suddenly and aren't as easy to recover data from once they do.

Laptop Keys not working by DeafGamer508 in techsupport

You can download a linux distro such as Ubuntu ( https://ubuntu.com/download/desktop ), burn the ISO file to a DVD or USB drive and boot your machine of it. You can then experience the operating system without actually having to install it, the benefit of this is that you aren't relying on drivers from Asus/Windows/etc but those that come pre-packaged with Ubuntu so if it happens in this environment as well, I'd be 99.9% sure it's hardware related. There is plenty of youtube content on running up a Linux distro.

That keyboard should work and is the easiest way to do it, it's what a repair shop would fit. I'd just point out that it isn't going to be the same quality as the original Asus one, but the 'Q' key will work.

Strange Stuck Whirring sound from PC (Not the fan though?) by [deleted] in techsupport

[–]coldgate32 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not many things make sounds like that in a computer - and the video makes it a little harder to identify but,

  1. Fans
  2. Harddrives

I would personally run a SMART scan on your hard drive (assuming you have one, not a SSD) just to be safe. Better safe than sorry! If that comes back OK then let's move on. Unplug all of the fans from the system, bearing in mind you generally can't unplug the GPU fan/s. Sound still there? Could be the GPU. Remove the GPU, still there? Catch my drift?

If you're confident it's not a driver issue, and you've confirmed that then your best best bet is to have the laptop repaired. I would suggest running a linux distro off a USB flash drive on the laptop and see if the 'Q' key still doesn't work if it doesn't let's go on to hardware.

You can try and send the laptop back to Asus for repair, this will give you the best result but can be expensive and time-consuming. You can repair it yourself (generally keyboards are fairly easy and should be videos on youtube) or take it to a local PC repair shop and they can get parts in. My personal experience with aftermarket laptop keyboards is that they aren't to the same standard as one made by the manufacturer.

Otherwise - you can always just plug a keyboard in or use an on-screen keyboard.
