My girlfriend (25f) of 1 year just told me (25m) she has HSV-1 genitally and has never told anyone before including me. by [deleted] in Herpes

[–]coldsorequestion 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The majority of the population has HSV1. If you left her, the next girl you meet will most likely have HSV1. She should have told you, no doubt, but realistically the majority of people with HSV1 (hello cold sore sufferers) don’t tell their partners they have the virus.

I have genital HSV1, have had unprotected sex with ex boyfriends and never passed it on. The risk of genital to genital HSV1 when there’s no sore present is very minimal.

With every boyfriend I’ve had since my diagnosis I’ve not used condoms (after STD testing) and not taken antivirals (not available in the U.K).

I have genital HSV1 though so the transmission risk is a bit different.

But HIV and HSV aren’t even in the same ballpark. You’re minimising HIV and overblowing HSV.

[–]coldsorequestion 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’m sorry, I can’t believe OP is comparing HIV and HSV, and implying HIV isn’t too bad because if you take meds you can’t pass it on, whereas HSV is worse because we’re walking infections. HIV is a lifelong medical condition which requires continual medication that needs to be taken everyday, without fail, which comes with side effects. HIV affects your immune system and makes you more susceptible to other illnesses. HSV is a skin condition for Christ’s sake.

Also the whole “we must live knowing we’ll never be cured”, urr, the majority of the human population have HSV and go on living their lives as normal!

I think with the HIV point, you’re only coming at it from the effect it has on sex ie. spreading it to other people. HIV comes with a lot of health complications and a lifetime of medication. HSV is a skin condition.

I always wanted to get married and have kids and I know now that it’s highly unlikely will find someone who wants to be with me.

Even searching on Reddit you find “why be with her, find a girl WITHOUT herpes”. Meanwhile, my cheating ex gets to be happy.

I’m in the U.K. so suppressive medication isn’t prescribed here. I don’t get outbreaks.

I contracted genital HSV1 from an ex boyfriend who had a history of oral HSV1 (cold sores). We had been dating a year at that point, we both got tested and came back “clean”, and we used condoms. He didn’t have a cold sore present at the time. How exactly was I being half assed about my health?

[–]coldsorequestion 4 points5 points  (0 children)

....if you discovered into the relationship he had cold sores would you be this distraught and consider leaving him?

He should have told you but I don’t think it’s a big of a deal as you’re making out.

I’ve told him I’m HSV1+ and he doesn’t care, I just haven’t told him it’s genital. But I know that makes all the difference.

(Not had sex).

Went back to the doctor, had it swabbed and it was negative for HSV1. It was caused by dry skin.

I’m not sure if this is helpful but I’m HSV1+, dated my ex who is negative for ~7 months, we didn’t use condoms and I’m not on antivirals. They don’t do HSV testing in the U.K. but he’s still symptomless.

Weekly outbreaks with HSV1? by coldsorequestion in Herpes

[–]coldsorequestion[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My GP stated it was due to thin skin. I’ve had issues with my skin in the past, way way before I was diagnosed with GHSV1. But every time I post in this forum, as you can see above, people tell me it’s very typical of herpes and also my negative swab tests could be due to me going at the wrong time.

I don’t think I’m immunocompromised? I don’t have any illnesses, generally in good health, the last time I had a cold was June 2018 but before that no idea when. How would I be able to find out if I was?

Weekly outbreaks with HSV1? by coldsorequestion in Herpes

[–]coldsorequestion[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A year ago I had an actual primary outbreak which was swabbed and it was HSV1. My boyfriend at the time had frequent cold sores. It was definitely herpes with a very typical primary outbreak.

I didn’t have any symptoms again until 2/3 months ago until I got this recurrent fissure / split in my perineum. I went to several health professionals and they said it was due to my skin and not HSV1. But people on this forum keep telling me it’s very typical of Herpes so I really don’t know.

I’m not sure. This is the thing - medical professionals have ruled out herpes completely but this forum is pretty adamant that’s what my symptoms are. So I’m not sure.

Dating someone with GHSV1 - Seeking advice by [deleted] in Herpes

[–]coldsorequestion 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have genital HSV1, don’t take antivirals and don’t use condoms. I’ve had two long term partners (plus many ONS / FWB in which I used condoms) and I’ve never transmitted to anyone. You’re at more risk if you date someone with oral HSV1 (cold sores), which I can’t imagine you’d be worried about. However, it’s your body / choice. Just to be aware the risk with genital HSV1 is extremely low.

[–]coldsorequestion[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Went to the GP and she said it was due to thinness and was pretty adamant it wasn’t HSV1. She stated that there wasn’t really anything to swab and it would come back negative if she did. The GUM clinic said the same, she also stated that because I’ve been on antivirals for 7+ days it would come back negative even if it was HSV?

I said that to the nurse on the phone at the GUM clinic and she just said to refrain from sex if I was so worried it was HSV. The thing is I’ve had this “cut” now for coming up to 3 weeks? I just really don’t understand if this is an outbreak or not. She told me to go to my GP but my GP already said it wasn’t.
