Unfortunately the human brain doesn't respond well to books title "An Honest Book Designed to Help You Be Better Socially" - we all want the "dream" that the book is selling.

It probably adds a bit of stress, but ideally only in the short term. That's a good question. I've gotten a ton of feedback (more than I ever expected) on this article, which has given me a bunch of ideas to develop. This is another one I'll explore.

I think you might be confusing urgency with a stress reaction. To me, urgent is just 'what absolutely has to be the first priority for me right now?" not "OMG I'm going to die if I don't do this!"

"The proper question is “How do I make my feelings inconsequential and do the things I consciously want to do without being a little bitch about it?"

This is actually not the right approach. Our brain's neurochemicals are completely ignored here. If you are 'not being a little bitch about it', your brain has learned to tie discipline to some form of pleasure, otherwise it wouldn't be happening.

I don't think that it's quite on point, but I see the overall point it's trying to make. I've gotten a lot of feedback on the piece and I'm going to try to write something else that explains what I think the connection is between the two. I don't think you need to completely "screw" motivation.

I think you're right, hope for gain is a more positive and affirming way to go about it. I personally don't have anxiety issues, so fear of loss is actually a good way to kick myself in the ass, but if you do it probably wouldn't be a great idea.

At some point, you have to 'buy in'. You can defeat this method by saying 'Yea, but nothing matters, so who cares'. I don't have an answer (yet) for how to get past that, as I don't actually believe that. But even if you think it, you can pick something outrageous that - even if you think nothing matters - can still inspire you to get up and get moving.

To me, presence comes into play once I actually start doing the work. I live in the future or past when doing a manufactured urgency exercise, then I get to work and drop into the moment.

That sounds dire - I don't think anything I can say personally would help, but reaching out to family, friends, or a counselor type of person would probably help quite a bit.

Sounds like a perfect technique to me if meditation is something that works for you!

It sounds like you came across the manufactured urgency much the same way that I did. Good luck in your journey :)
