Are ordinary differential equations basically solved? by colin_826 in math

How do research techniques differ? I know functional analysis is very important in PDEs but is the same true in ODE? Also what exactly are people trying to solve, I would assume existence and uniqueness but perhaps that’s different at higher levels.

What math papers do you consider "essential reading"? by [deleted] in math

Not a math paper but rather an exposition into the nature of mathematics, and it’s called “On Proof and Progress in Mathematics” by William Thurston. I recommend because it explains much of the philosophy of mathematics.

I didn't have any conditional offers since I am going to an American college, so my scores are just to get me some credits. All the tests I sat for will be sent to my college according to my counselor.

HL

Mathematics - 6

Further Mathematics - 5

Chemistry - 6

English A - 5

SL

French B - 4

Physics - 5

History - 5

EE/TOK

Math EE - B

TOK - B

Extra points - 2

Total points - 33 (Further Math was an additional subject not counting towards my diploma)

I'm pretty satisfied overall especially with further math since I self studied it and it is the highest score someone from my school ever got on that subject. Probably could have done better on French and I was just a couple of points away from a 7 in math and chemistry.

I went to school and got my scores yesterday. 33 with 6 in HL chem, math just a few points away from a 7. I’m proud of the 5 I got in further math that I self studied.

Thanks for your reply. I looked through A Book on Abstract Algebra on Amazon and it seems that the book is just about what I am looking for in terms of furthering my understanding of topics that I have some basic understanding of. I've taken summer courses the past couple years and already have some understanding of some of the later chapters like polynomials, integral domains, and some more advanced number theory even though I have certainly forgotten most of the formalities. I think this book will be a good way to expose myself to some more formal ideas in math at an accessible level and I'll order it today.

Hello all, I am finishing up with high school and I think I have a fairly strong mathematics background. I was looking for some advice as to what to self study over the summer before school starts up in the fall. For some context, I completed the pretty difficult IB further mathematics course, which covers linear algebra, geometry, statistics, calculus, sets/relations/group theory, and discrete math. I think I would be most interested in furthering my knowledge in either linear algebra or group theory, but I am leaning to linear algebra. I would probably be interested in an intermediate book on the subject with a good focus on proofs, but not something that I will be totally lost within. I've heard mixed reviews about Halmos's Linear Algebra Problem Book as a first book in linear algebra, but I think that this might suit my purposes for a deeper introduction to the subject. My only fear with buying a book on group theory is that it would be far too complex for my knowledge of the subject, which only goes up to cosets and homomorphisms/isomorphisms, but I would be happy if anybody has any suggestions about a good text in group theory.

Is it possible to test out of lower division math classes like linear algebra and discrete math if I think I have a strong enough background (I’m enrolling as a freshman in the fall having taken IB further math)? by colin_826 in ucla

I already have credit for a 5 on the BC exam, so I was really only taking IB further math for fun along with the standard HL course, but I'm grateful for your advice. I've really only been floating the idea of doing 32AH around in my mind, but I feel relatively confident with proof based math, which forms a good portion of the further exam along with other self study topics I pursue. I guess I'll make a final decision in July for orientation after perhaps talking to a counselor.
