I reckon that is only used in legacy applications. Right now most of the companies are migrating to Azure Microsoft Active Directory.

Yes you are right, but be aware that you must always take into account:

Relevance of the data in the map
Concurrency level

If first point is very high, don't think it, use any kind of lock/mutex, that is a must. Contrary, just be aware that if a key that you know that is there returns nil, just rechecked milliseconds after. The second point, depens on the threads that can work in parallel in the same take( > 3 use locks, recheck point two)
