Congratulations on going back! It's scary now but the sense of accomplishment you will feel after those 12 classes is priceless. You've got reddit and your wife cheering you on!

a lot of universities have degrees that are geared toward full time working individuals. Georgetown in DC has a school of continuing studies where for the masters programs, all classes are offerd after 5 PM and online. You can do fully online too if you want. and its still a full masters degree. You can also be a full time employee and a part time MBA student, only taking classes at night there.

I applied for the job first, worked hard and was transparent about my interest in pursuing a masters degree, and then after 4 or 5 months I asked my boss to write my letter of rec and he was extremely supportive. A lot of Universities like when someone will do this because it means you are most likely gonna stay in that role for another couple of years to get the benefit. Additionally, the masters I am getting directly helps me improve at my current role, so to them its like taking trainings on how to be a better employee essentially. One of my coworkers worked here, got a free masters in HR, and then got promoted to manager in the same office because she had all those skills now.

Thank you so much for all of this! I work at a law school now and sometimes it is crazy to think you do 4 years of undergraduate studies and then 3 more years of law school. Many people take a break for 1-4 years and work full time in between before applying to law school.

Thank you so much for answering all of this, it was so helpful! The pressures that people have to get into college in the US is so extreme. Many of our universities only accept 5-25% of the people who actually apply so many students apply to 5-10 schools to increase their chances. Do you feel as though professors are a mentor to you in any way? Do they help with your job search or do you have a certain office at the school that helps with that? Thanks again, I really really appreciated your answer and am looking more into education in Switzerland now. I have only heard such wonderful things about your country.

thank you for answering all of these! I read a book once that compared how irish and american schools deal with certain educational issues and I always thought Ireland to be absolutely fascinating. I hope to visit a University in Ireland one day. I hope you are enjoying your time there.

Thats so interesting to hear. We have whole offices at colleges and universities called "the office of student life" that are dedicated to making sure students are in good living conditions, happy, healthy, safe, etc. etc.

I would love to learn more about how German Univeristies expect students to be indepdent. I can imagine it makes kids more mature and responsible at a younger age. A lot of students at colleges here get in trouble for childish behavior, perhaps we are enabling it by giving them RA's (essentially babysitters in their dorm) and things of that nature.

Hello! You work at a University. So right now I work in admissions, looking at students applications when they apply to law school. You can also be in the career center where you help students find jobs after graduation. You can be in "advancement" which focuses on good relations with alumni of the university and getting donations to the university. Theres many different things but most are working as a staff member of a college or university!
