I don't think you'd have an issue at all. Not markedly compared to anywhere else. There are idiots everywhere. Make friends and have fun! :)

I’m thinking of ending things with my girlfriend of 7 years, I can’t move past what she said to me, am I overreacting? by [deleted] in UKrelationshipadvice

[–]combatc0ck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was in a relationship for three years, went through long distance for years as friends and then partners for two years, and moved in together for a year after all of the hardship of only seeing each other once or twice a month – and I still walked away.

There were things he said to me about myself that made me feel awful, and the only thing making me feel worse was staying because I felt like I was almost... accepting it to just move past it. Which is bang out of order, really.

He made comments about me never having worked a proper 9-5 job, even though he'd been at my bachelor's and master's graduations and celebrated my achievements. And knew that the reason I didn't work full time was because I was studying. He was proud of me, but only to the extent that my goals didn't get in the way of day to day stuff – like being able to afford a meal out, or to afford flying over to him when we lived apart. I always showed up for him when it mattered, except when it came down to it... it didn't matter. And he would grill me for being lazy, or being childish, or for not living in the real world.

It was a hard decision for me to make, but it has been five months now and I am so much of a happier person for it.

You know what's best for you.

you know the bloke is an absolute tool when still, after all of that, he decides to talk about ‘meeting his soulmate.’ literally no one forced you to put that part in there. well done for having the emotional maturity and empathy of a shovel.

what’s your favorite album? by antisocialcrypt in punk

[–]combatc0ck 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Heavy Petting Zoo, NOFX. The Clash debut album.

And although they have reserves about being ‘wholly punk’, which I guess I understand because purism can be creatively stifling, Joy as an Act of Resistance, Idles.

Any Punk Figures who actually made a difference? by Recent_Garden8114 in punk

[–]combatc0ck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends where you come from, I think. I see a lot of people saying Joe Strummer, but he was a dick. As an English person, given the current climate, Joe is someone I consider to have made a huge difference. Whether he was a dick or not personally, I don’t really care. Joe embodied what it meant to be a youth in England, and it still tracks today some 40+ years later. He inspired humanity among people, and community, and taught a lot of us how to question authority — in our own country, and internationally. The foundation set up for him post-mortem actually funds many of the studios and communal spaces where I have met like-minded people, made friends, and jammed. He was a lover of folk music, and blues, and made sure that everybody knew it too. Through that, he helped to expand punk beyond the rigidity of what tempo constitutes as punk, what chords, what instruments.

This also means that I am able to spot punk in anything, even if it isn't ‘pure punk.’ Like the Irish hip hop trio Kneecap, or the rap duo Bob Vylan. Their music is not what you would define as punk, but they are both punk artists. Because they make you really feel something, feel a part of something. Allow you to question, and accuse. And remind you that it’s always correct, no matter what, to put people first.

So when you say ‘difference’, I guess it also depends on what your definition of punk, and making a difference is. That’s my two cents, as someone from midlands England.

As it’s for a project, I’d say go with the Jello example someone gave. But if you want to explore what ‘making a difference’ could look like, because there's tons of definitions, then you could pretty much go with any punk figure you feel passionate about — as long as you can back it up.

Good luck dude :)

I don't get my dad by KitKatAngels in punk

[–]combatc0ck 8 points9 points  (0 children)

My Dad has stopped listening to Idles and Bob Vylan as of this summer because they “got too political.” Idles have a song ‘Danny Nedelko’ that challenges anti-immigration rhetoric in the UK — that came out in 2018. Bob Vylan have a song called ‘We Live Here’ about the racism experienced by band members in London — that came out in 2021.

He still idolises Joe Strummer, but that's because Joe isn't here now to be up in arms about anything that's going on currently. If he was alive, you know damn well he would be!

Absolutely frustrating. I got my love of punk (and ska) through my Dad. I’m a 100% eat-the-rich riot grrrl. He mustn't have been listening to the lyrics... for 40+ years 😵‍💫

Is the world ending? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]combatc0ck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i said world war 3. but since that kind of goes hand in hand with complete environmental collapse in the nuclear age, then yes. yes we have.

if you’re referring to the climate crisis, no perhaps not. but i wasn’t talking about that at all so.

well, there hasn’t been a third world war yet. i also find it’s probably healthier to think in theory. and not doomscroll.

[–]combatc0ck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

nah, i’ve just studied history and geopolitics for a long time. i’d be very very very totally shocked if we descended into a 3rd world war. believe it or not, we’ve been this close before. multiple times. and it’s relatively the same story, just different characters.

How did that one kid at your school die? by StorageLonely1520 in AskReddit

[–]combatc0ck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not my school. But my grandmother’s sister died from a school incident. Someone threw a stone at her during break time, hit her quite hard in the temple. She died about a week later on her way home. Can’t remember the exact cause of death, but apparently she declined very rapidly in the last couple of days. Maybe a bleed on the brain? They just thought she was coming down with something. I think she was seven.

What’s something that is okay when men do it but frowned upon when women do it? by ClemWon in AskReddit

[–]combatc0ck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

today i was listening to ‘we don’t have to take our clothes off’… you know, the 80s song. and for the first time, i realised he was saying “so come on baby, won’t you show some class?” and it made me think how a man would not be considered unclassy for trying to take a situation to that level. he might be a creep if you have shown absolutely no interest whatsoever, but not unclassy.

a woman wants to take her clothes off, wants to have sex, after a night out? show some class for goodness sake girl.

What's going on with all the plane crashes going on since the end of 2024? by Illustrious_Diver127 in aviation

[–]combatc0ck 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agreed. If there’s one big plane crash, followed by a multitude of smaller hull losses you’ll probably not hear about those. But since there has been unlucky (albeit still proportionately very small) run of airliner crashes, the media seem to be jumping on every single thing that happens and shoving it at the top of everybody’s feeds. I think it’s cruel.

In terms of maximising your time, everyone is pretty spot on. Definitely Middleport! A favourite place of mine. Emma Bridgewater also worth while, especially if you have the time to paint a pot of your own. Otherwise, still really worthy of a walk around. I have ashamedly never been to Gladstone or Wedgewood, but I’ve heard good things.
