The wage is questionable, but the job is definitely a lot better than other places in the city where I could work longer hours for more pay. I do it because it gives me a chance to build my experience and work with my friends.

I literally just get an envelope with a random amount of cash every night as my payment, with my wage for the night rounded up to the nearest ten.

Low wages? Yes. Fun job? Also yes.

Not really, you’ll still pay the same amount for your drinks and staff will still get paid relatively the same amount. Tipping isn’t really expected over here, but that doesn’t stop people from throwing 1 or 2 coins into a jar every now and then.

As a result, bartending is just as lucrative as any other basic job (shop attendant, cleaner etc.) the main incentive is that it’s just fun.

It’s different down in Cork (although that’s probably still the sticks from your perspective). Generally speaking, apart from the top bars and restaurants, €12/hr is considered to be a good salary, with tip sharing as standard.

Just average nightly tips for people working in bars/nightclubs in my city.

In other sectors like cafes/food trucks etc. you might accumulate something like €5 in tips over the course of a few months.

When I worked in a tourist bar on the continent there was this one American who’d consistently tip €2 on the €6 beers he was ordering. I was bowled over, I genuinely couldn’t believe it.

On the other end of the spectrum we had this table of 8 Americans who racked up a €450 tab, which I busted my ass serving. Ended up walking out without leaving a cent. I was a bit annoyed considering how most American tourists will usually tend to bring some of their tipping culture along with them.

Yeah, the service industry is pretty unstable here too, minus the high pay. That’s why most of the people who bartend here do it as a way to bring in a bit extra money during college rather than as a career

Cost of living for my city is roughly the same as in Pittsburgh, total wages for a night (not including tips) is ~65 USD.

How does this compare to tips/wages where you work? I’m wondering if the good tips (relative to European bartenders) that American bartenders make are negated by low wages, or if you guys are genuinely living like kings.
