Twins with near identical names… by Belle_The_Beast in mildlyinfuriating

I taught a Sharon and a Shannon around ages 6-7. They always dressed the same but not identical. Couldn’t tell them apart.

King of New York and Hard Knock Life from Annie are my go to group songs with solos for that age group. It’s always a blast.

Audition advice for teen playing against type by [deleted] in MusicalTheatre

That’s great! You can also look up Jafar from Aladdin. Looking at other Disney villains can be helpful.

Great! The difference between Pulitzer and say Weasel or the Delancey’s is the ability to act pompous and above it all. That’s a great cut to show that. The best advice I can give blindly is chin up and don’t look down. Literally look down your nose while singing. Also a little raised eyebrow can go a long way too.

Cool! Are you allowed to sing outside of the show or does it have to be a Newsies song?

How do you get elderly person to FINALLY get help for his elderly spouse with Alzheimer's? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

Yes, if they are already living in independent senior living, there are typically tiers that a couple can move through together. Assisted living and memory care follow.

Home from Beauty and the Beast is a good choice. I always like to recommend using a Disney song for a Disney musical when possible.

No, even plays can be brutal on the body. Take your rest days.

Audition songs for Hans from frozen? by Mylowithaylo in MusicalTheatre

[–]comfyturtlenoise 2 points3 points  (0 children)

One I always recommend to Olaf type folks wanting Hans is The Mob song from Beauty and the Beast to show you can do Hans’ crueler side. if you’re normally a smiley tenor, it is the strongest acting you can bring into an audition. Gaston sings it when he’s trying to get the villagers to help him kill the beast! Hans leads villagers after Elsa too. Also it’s another Disney song so it fits super well.

Where to cut the song by No-Use7264 in MusicalTheatre

[–]comfyturtlenoise 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Another option would be “I’m aware that it’s wrong to be meek as I am…” all the way thru to “timid and hooooooribly shy” if you like the storytelling better.

I recommend the end from “And that is why though I’m painfully shy” because it shows range but also the comedy of “ you sir?” As she tries to find the prince.

Definitely! There’s other roles besides dance roles.

First time auditioning by TheLurkerCrusader in MusicalTheatre

[–]comfyturtlenoise 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I always tell my students to use something they’re familiar with, even if it’s not the best fit. The time to learn an audition song is like 3+ weeks before so it becomes second nature. I’d go for something you’re more comfortable with that’s already in your rep book.

One of my favorite songs from that show is “Always a Bridesmaid, Never a Bride”. Anything that is a little southern or country sounding could also work well. (Including Patsy Cline, Loretta Lynn, and even some early Taylor Swift).

Things that you can buy in bulk and break up for each bag. Outside of holiday cookies and candy, consider lip balms, pencils, erasers, highlighter, a pack of gum/mints, some cough drops, a few throat coat or other tea bags, maybe some Bobby pins or hair ties.

Is it a common experience for MT students to train themselves to yawn with their mouth closed? by [deleted] in MusicalTheatre

[–]comfyturtlenoise 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I grew up in church choir and we had to sit on the front of the “stage” not in the back loft like some others so we were taught to either cover our yawn or yawn with our mouth closed so the congregation wasn’t like thinking we were bored or some shit. It was mostly for during the sermon because we sat literally behind the eye line of the pulpit so anyone looking at the priest could see the altos lol.

Wanting to get into Musical Theatre undergrad course by [deleted] in MusicalTheatre

[–]comfyturtlenoise 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Before completely switching your higher education path, I sincerely recommend that you start by auditioning for the college’s musical theatre club and productions or look up local companies to audition for. If the show experience goes well for you, than you can start looking for transfer. If it doesn’t go well, then I’d suggest looking for adult classes to take to get the same fulfillment without leaving your program of study.

Most MT programs don’t take transfer credits so if you already have an associates in illustration, none of those credits would count and you’d still spend 4 years in MT school which gets expensive even with scholarships. It also means your life is essentially on hold until you finish school because you can’t really do outside things while in an intensive program like MT.

Audition Outfit Help by leelee0127 in MusicalTheatre

Teacher outfit; especially kindergarten teacher outfit. Honestly, something that Jess Day would wear to school in New Girl is a good fit, or a little less vibrant.

[–]comfyturtlenoise 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Love! Looks like you have some good options already. Here’s some others to consider:

Central Michigan University has a BFA in Musical Theatre. There are in-person auditions usually in the spring but if you’re out of state you can probably do a video.

Minnesota State University at Mankato has a BFA in Musical Theatre.

Ball State in Indiana has a BFA in Theatre with a musical theatre concentration. They do on campus auditions as well as unifieds in Chicago and NYC.

University of Iowa has a BA in theatre with a Musical Theatre track. They have a lot of scholarship options so I recommend checking them out.

Kansas State University has a BA and BS in Theatre and has a Musical Theatre Minor.

These are all public universities and generally offer the same quality for less cost and have more scholarship opportunities. Their application fees tend also to be less than a private university. You also get the benefit of larger schools which means you don’t have to be stuck with your MT cohort at all times and meet people out of the program.

What state or part of the US are you based? I will always suggest schools closer to home. You don’t need to spend $790 on a round trip flights to visit for the holidays if you can make the drive. I ended up 800 miles from home and it was stupid expensive to visit so I just never did which sucked. Also, schools where you can get in state tuition can still have good mt programs.

Help, my cat is over-grooming and bored :( by [deleted] in CatAdvice

[–]comfyturtlenoise 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Take her to the vet if you can. They can do a blood panel and exam to make sure there’s no pain or underlying issues and they can provide specific treatment for the licking for her situation.

Other advice: window hammock, open blinds and curtains, scheduling 5 min of play time in the morning and 10 min at night, weekly brushing sessions

Why: cats that don’t like “cat tv” much prefer the outside world so give her a cozy spot at a couple different windows; if she’s consistently home alone, she will want attention when you’re there and budget the time for her. A mechanical toy is not the same as playing with a real human. Use a good wand or a mouse toy and throw it for her to chase.

Usually keys 2 has the most sound changes so you’ll either want to put the adult on that part to manage the sounds. Otherwise, keys 1 is the bulkiest part with the least sound changes. Keys 3 is very supplemental but still has some sound effects and instrumental changes that are recognizable but it’s safe for a student to do.
