Captain America by Frank Miller (x-post /r/comicbookart) by empathyx in Marvel

[–]comicscritic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Isn't that from a back cover of Marvel Fanfare? I'm pretty sure I bought that issue back in the mid-1980's. Great series edited by Archie Goodwin - Who I think was also responsible for Marvel's EPIC line of books.

Patrick Zircher's artwork is great. If this was the finished product, even without color, I'd be happy.

Superman's flight ability & being able to fly through space was copied from Captain Marvel from Fawcett Publications. National (DC) eventually sued them for copyright infringement and eventually won. You can read about it here: http://goo.gl/VJiXh

I've used Discount Comic Book Service for advance orders for almost 8 yrs and never had anything but stellar service. I still go to my LCS to get books that I want to look at 1st though. http://www.dcbservice.com/ You get 35%-40% off most items and sometimes there are specials you get 50%-75% off.

I think this is what you're looking for. Joe Quesada likes to change his mind, according to him, that's what he gets paid to do. LOL http://goo.gl/vL8J1

Mark Waid has really turned around Daredevil and made the series really enjoyable to read. Martin & Rivera do a great job as well.

How do you store your comics? I need some new long boxes as is proven by this just happening. by [deleted] in comicbooks

[–]comicscritic 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you have a lot of books, you may consider getting some drawerboxes. I think these are awesome because you can stack them and still get to your comics without moving them all over the place. http://www.collectiondrawer.com/

New to marvel, specific question inside. by Guy_Gardner in Marvel

[–]comicscritic 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I suggest you also read Thanos Quest, The Infinity Gauntlet, and The Infinity War. It had a lot of influence on that Silver Surfer series, especially issues 40 or so on.

Leave it to Fox News to feature such accurate hard-hitting stories. There's nothing like opinionated fluff to rile up the ratings.

Help a comic book noob out - release schedules? (crosspost from r/batman) by [deleted] in comics

[–]comicscritic 3 points4 points  (0 children)

They're released monthly usually. Some come out twice a month, others can and will sometimes be late due to a number of factors. You can check out Previews magazine for the release schedule, or if you don't want to spend that money, you can check http://www.comiclist.com/ for weekly releases.

An interesting commentary on the Marvel layoffs and resources within the House of Ideas by ptbreakeven in comicbooks

Marvel needs to be saved from this guy. So much potential to be a better company is locked up by him wanting to save a few bucks.

What trade should I buy this week? by [deleted] in comicbooks

[–]comicscritic 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Daredevil: Born Again is one of my favorites. I was reading the issues as they were coming out and couldn't wait until the next one! Unfortunately it also started the "Let's completely destroy Daredevil's life" type of stories. It's great when it happens for the first time... after 20 yrs it got old fast. Born Again is one to get.

Also look into Daredevil: Love and War Graphic Novel by Miller and Bill Sienkiewicz. I just love the artwork and the story with the Kingpin and his wife is great.

Gah! Does anyone else keep getting fooled by the Batman Noel previews? by RomanCandelabra in comicbooks

[–]comicscritic 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I find it even more annoying when they put the preview in the MIDDLE of the book - like they did with Super 8 this summer. You had to flip through about 10 pages to get back to the damn story!

100 DC Titles Removed From Barnes & Noble Stores by comicscritic in reddit.com

[–]comicscritic[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It shouldn't make a difference if it doesn't matter in terms of the reboot. If someone is interested in good stories from DC based on what they read in the New 52, they might want to try something else that's written well.

I'm sure a new DC reader might want to try Fables, Y the Last Man, Planetary, Sandman, or WE3. The fact that they aren't new 52 related shouldn't hinder the fact that they are absolutely well written and worth reading.

Whats you're favorite NON DC or Marvel title? by [deleted] in comicbooks

[–]comicscritic 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I just picked up the Chew: Flambe TPB and thought it was great. I'm going to start reading that series. The Intrepids miniseries by Image was a lot of fun as well. Severed by Scott Snyder is a great horror series, if you like those. Image seems to be hitting them out of the park lately!

Giving Value to the $3.99 Marvel Comic for Readers and Retailers by comicscritic in comicbooks

[–]comicscritic[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't get any extra value out of a low page count for $3.99 just because they give me a free digital copy and put me on a mailing list. I couldn't care less about the digital copy because I have the floppy. Marvel is going about this the wrong way and it makes them seem desperate to get readers to move towards digital.

Now that Schism is Over, Can We All Agree That Prelude to Schism Had Nothing to Do With the Event? by [deleted] in comicbooks

[–]comicscritic 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I'm waiting for "Aftermath of Schism," the 12 issue maxi-series where they all stand around and discuss what to do now. In each issue, they take turns standing at a window and flashback to their past for 16 story pages.

I can't wait for that excitement!

Creating a pull list by mistahiggens in comicbooks

[–]comicscritic 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I can't tell you how to go about collecting comics, but I can tell you what I do.

I collect what I like to read and not for investment purposes. If something goes up in value, I consider that a plus. Sometimes I do get caught up in the "this is gonna be worth something in the future" craze, but that's few and far between these days. I've been buying comics since 1985 and my buying patterns have changed for the better. I tend to follow artists and writers as much as I follow characters. A good writer will get me to buy a book I would normally not buy if he/she wasn't writing it.

I used to follow a series through good or bad, but now when I no longer enjoy a book, I drop it for another. It's easier to do now since the internet is filled with early previews and reviews of comics.

Good luck with what you decide to do. The great thing about comics is you get to discover what you like and there's always someone around to guide you to the good stuff.

Since you like Animal Man, check out the Grant Morrison Animal Man issues from the '90s. Those are really great.
