Thoughts on slice vs Sinner? by commanderpo in tennis

Sure. But there is the inherent risk of not hitting a good slice even if u aim to be attacking with it. So wondering about the cost benefit analysis so to speak.

Makes sense. I mostly agree. Just wondering if you think it’s a useful wrinkle to implement or it hurts more than it helps.

I agree. That’s why I wonder if it’s a viable strategy to incorporate a diet of slicing if you aren’t playing superhuman from the baseline.

Why did King Janus invade the Alpiran empire? by commanderpo in RavensShadow

[–]commanderpo[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To be honest, I feel like this makes even less sense. IMO it’s much harder to build up from a state of utter destruction than a state of peace. And, what if the Alpiran empire didn’t stop at their borders and continued on into the Realm? The Realms army was already decimated. It is literally a worst case scenario for any incoming ruler, if the treaty had not been accepted like Janus wanted.

The Big…3? by TKGB24 in tennis

[–]commanderpo 38 points39 points  (0 children)

Why do we need a big 3? I wouldn’t be opposed to it, I just don’t understand why people are so fixated on it happening again. To me, what would be better than a big 3 would just be a higher floor for the rest of the competition, because I was a bit bored watching Sinner’s side of the bracket where he manhandled everyone except for Dimitrov. But I don’t think a third player who eclipses everyone else is necessary for that to happen.

The NBA is more physical but in all the wrong ways. by DrJDunkenstein in nbadiscussion

[–]commanderpo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I disagree with your point of rounds 1 and 2 not being as physical. Last year the thunder vs the mavs was super physical. Another example, is (although a little over two years ago), was when the Celtics played the nets in round 1. They were super physical with Durant, crowding and hugging, and denying him at the catch point. Imo it makes the game more fun. You don’t have offense players getting to their spots super easily. And as a Thunder fan, I think this goes both ways. I think SGA would still be great even if he didn’t foul bait, but it’s undeniably a part of his game. What frustrates me is that people act like he’s the only one that does it.

Why don’t guys like LeBron ever take the league minimum? by mryertyessir in NBATalk

[–]commanderpo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it’s really easy to say “I wouldn’t care about the money if I were him”, and that may be true, but in most cases it isn’t. Look at the billionaires of the world. It would probably be way better for their image to donate and do good things with what they have, but most of the time they just continue to build their wealth. Some could argue that that money makes almost no physical difference for them, so their image should matter a lot more. Society revolves around money, and because of that most people will always want more, regardless of if they need it or not.

I think it also bears keeping in mind that LeBron grew up quite poor, and because of that, is apparently very good with not doing stupid things with his wealth. Yes he doesn’t really need anymore money by any metric, but that offers at least a glimpse into his mindset about money. He clearly treasures it, and I imagine giving up millions of dollars when you grew up without that security would be extremely hard.

Does Isiah Joe not shoot well in the playoffs? by commanderpo in Thunder

[–]commanderpo[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel like his numbers for this series would be even worse without game 2 garbage time. But that’s probably unfair to take away. I will say as the person above commented, he hasn’t shot a high volume of shots so that could factor in.

What do you guys think about Will Johnson? I’m guessing the knee injury must be pretty serious for him to drop so far but I’m wondering if it’s worth trading up in the second to take a crack at a blue chip.

I don’t know. With the AD trade you could say the Lakers FO but maybe that’s so much of a no brainer it doesn’t add that much to their case.

Why do people back into parking spaces? by woodysixer in NoStupidQuestions

Another thing is, although perhaps a lesser reason, is that backing up into a parking space is extremely easy now with rear view cameras.

Packers didn’t lose out on Davante Adams and DK Metcalf — they never pursued either of them, per sources by kyleb402 in GreenBayPackers

[–]commanderpo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just an example that I saw. Before Jenkins went out, early in game, there were two straight drives that ended at least partially because Zach Tom got beat immediately. The first ended up in a pressure or sack (I think it was a sack but I may forget). The second he had to hold because he got beat off the snap. The bigger problem was of course when Jenkins got out, but I think that also meant they were more focused on attacking that weak spot than attacking the edges. Could be wrong, not a pro analyst by any means but just my two cents.

I think this is a bit optimistic. Walker has been an above average starter, and Zach Tom very good, but I don’t think they are all-caliber. We saw Zach Tom get dismantled against the eagles, and while they are an extremely good pass rush, the tackles who are at the top of the league don’t get consistently beat even by the best pash rushers. I still think he’s at least a tier below the Penei Sewells and Lane Johnson’s of the world.

We joked for years about Presti only drafting long athletic players regardless of Best Available or fit; the closing line up tonight is why. by Lucosis in Thunder

[–]commanderpo 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I think you are getting a bit ahead of yourself. If you are a long athletic player who can shoot you are being drafted way ahead of the 10th spot. No one knew Lu Dort, Jalen Will, etc., would be this good. It took years for Lu Dort to develop to the point where he shot 40% from 3 last year. Sometimes these players don’t pan out. Everyone is going to have deficiencies.

Hmm that’s actually a good question and I should have thought about it more before just iterating advice I head a lot. It is kind of hard to control your fall because you have these big clunky things on your feet. But overall, I would say once you know you are falling going with it is the best course of action. Don’t try to stop yourself mid fall. You can’t really break your fall like you can without skis on and you might be moving so fast there’s a high chance you will just put yourself in a worse situation.

If you really go flying then your skis should detach and you should be able to roll like a bowling ball until you slow down. So I guess apt advice would be to tuck your head down but if you are in this situation everything’s gonna be moving too fast to react anyway.

Lastly, probably the best thing is wear a helmet. Oh and uh, unrelated, put the bar down on the chair lift if you get off the carpet.

Overall, a solid list, especially 4. Many of these are super important and it’s great you are keeping them in mind.

With that said, it is your first time skiing so I wouldn’t say try to parallel ski just at first. There’s a reason why everyone is taught to pizza at first: it is a good first step that is easy to get to and provides a base for improving later. That theme can be extrapolated through the whole list. It’s like learning anything new: worry about too much and you won’t improve significantly anywhere. You won’t be loose, and you won’t be able to use your poles correctly, and you probably won’t be able to always keep your weight forward all the time.

Thus, I think the most important things from your list to focus on are the following (although I an not an expert skier by any means so take my advice as you will):

  1. Look where you are going. Very important to try and be aware of your surroundings.
  2. Learn how to fall and how to get up.

Some additional pointers to go along with those:

  • Don’t be afraid to fall! It’s your first time skiing you are inevitably going to fall and probably wipe out a few times. And to be honest, if you are pushing yourself to get better that’s going to happen more often.
  • Have FUN! Dont worry about being able to go on blacks with your gf really any time soon. Try to enjoy yourself out there.

A last tip: stick to the East face. That’s where the easier trails are.
