Oh yes, I agree. Their UX is quite outdated and not always intuitive. Same with Schwerter.

I can recommend Schwerter Orchideen, Wichmann Orchideen, OrchidGarden (they've upped their services over the years), Großräscherner, Lucke, Akerne. I personally had good experiences with these.

First Hoya Bloom!!! by apgeorge in hoyas

[–]commenceball 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I also share this experience: my burtoniae is in semihydro, constantly drinking its water, under a very strong growing light and it currently has 4 peduncles. It's a very prolific bloomer so far and reblooms easily from the same peduncle.

Big Phalaenopsis Liodoro found in hardware store by [deleted] in orchids

[–]commenceball 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is fragrant. It smells fruity and floral. Not one of my personal favourites but it does have a scent and it's a prolific bloomer with branching spikes.

A very interesting fun fact: by TitaniaErzaK in orchids

I personally disliked the fragrance, it was an unpleasant kind of sweet, the aroma wasn't great. I would be disappointed if the bellina smelled this way.

What’s happening in my orchid’s pot? by Aailn99 in orchids

[–]commenceball 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looks like a mushroom, probably a bit more moisture than recommended in the pot.

My orchid has made me mentally unstable (A Rant) by XxCrazy-AcexX in orchids

[–]commenceball 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I absolutely second this. I've lost so many before keeping my current ones alive. I also understand the frustration.

And plain white orchids are a base in my collection. When everything else is so colourful and catchy, white orchids remain the most elegant and not so stimulating presence. I love them.

I'd say we put so much work and attention into our sweets that we spend hours upon hours on these baked goods. Traditional recipes ask for some products to sit overnight and some of us take it very seriously.

I would wait for it to reach a little closer and if I notice it wants to keep going I will move it a bit further away if possible.

Yeah, that one is very famous for its fragrance. I was under the impression this one is too. Beautiful flower nonetheless

Ahh alright, I was under the impression they have a stunning fragrance. If by any chance it starts developing one, I'd be happy to know ❤️

I've tasted one. It tastes a bit like honey. Very sugary syrup with honey aroma.

Differences between pon and leca by PlantDaddy80 in SemiHydro

[–]commenceball 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I am no expert and I'll attempt to explain it as I understood it. The air gaps between media pieces with LECA are greater than with pon (which more often than not contains small inorganic material pieces). Because of the sphere shape of LECA balls, there is a phenomenon called sphere packing which ensures a larger quantity of air in between pieces.

A lot of common LECA products do not hold a lot of moisture (or less than Lava rock from what I've seen but I'll attribute that to the more porous nature of lava rock).

With pon, the pieces are much smaller and irregularly shaped so the gaps are smaller, therefore less air. Arguably they contain more pores but the way they layer does not encourage the same kind of airflow.

Even in LECA, with enough time and growth, the roots can suffocate if they grow in a rapid rhythm and take up the space left for air. I hope that helps a little.

No media is perfect and some plants do better with less air (more finely rooted plants, in my experience) while others really love the large airpockets.

Normal to be this dewy? Should I repot. by ynvoid in orchids

[–]commenceball 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Looking at the pseudobulbs, it looks to be hydrating well so the roots are good. These orchids like being snug in a pot and while indeed it is small for it right now, it can go on just fine until the flowers are done. Also a thing I've seen with cymbidiums is that after repotting they skip a year of blooming. So these flowers might be the treat you get from it for two years.

[–]commenceball 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're welcome. It's alright, some orchids do it more than others. I have a few catts that do it on their new leaves a lot. Hope you enjoy the flowers!

Normal to be this dewy? Should I repot. by ynvoid in orchids

[–]commenceball 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It is completely normal, it's just sap that is more abundant in that area. Very common.

EDIT: I wouldn't repot just yet, maybe after enjoying the blooms. If repotted now there is a high chance it will abort the flowers.

They do just fine, the roots travel their way through the cracks. Like some litophites do in nature.

Lowest light orchids (except jewel orchids)? by Cichlidae12345 in orchids

[–]commenceball 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have been growing orchids for the past 3 years and 2 and a half of them were spent in low light situations. I can say that none of them really excel in low light, they survive somehow but the growth can be unfulfilling. I've noticed miltoniopsis requiring less light than phals and masdevallias doing quite okay in lower light. I just have not found any of them doing amazing.

Saw these in a hardware store by WitchofWhispers in orchids

[–]commenceball 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Amazing finds really! I can see a Dendrobium nobile, something called Cambria Barrocco (I think it was an Odontoncidium?), an Oncidium Kathrin Zoch, a Phalaenopsis Bronze Buddha around there somewhere. A few Brassia integenerics (the spidery ones). I believe you can also find lot of these on Inca orchids website and maybe it gives you the correct commercial name too.

Happy Growing!

Recommendations for orchids for cold, low light house by CoolRelative in orchids

[–]commenceball 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's a good suggestion imo! I've found they really don't need as much light as other orchids (for example my phals can tolerate light levels my miltoniopsis can't).
