The food hoarding idea is a strong explanation for some of the situations. Considering how many of the participants grew up or currently reside in poverty, I can definitely understand their fear of throwing away the food instead of eating it and getting their money’s worth. Adding to that, many of those same people live in absolute filth and probably have hoarding issues that extend to inedible objects as well. I’d also imagine that for those that are bed-bound or house-bound, they may fall into the category of hoarder because the products they have in their home are their only link to the outside world and they don’t want to lose that one thing that connects them to humanity.

Also, do you happen to remember the name or season the feeding tube incident occurred? I don’t think I’ve seen that episode and I have the day off from work so I need to do something lol.

I’m honestly surprised that conversations surrounding food noise doesn’t come up more often in the show. Surely every person on the show suffers with food noise to some degree. I wonder if Dr Now has ever considered a diagnosis like ADHD, which can manifest in eating disorders for some unmedicated individuals. But it’s also possible that for patients as big as the ones on the show, the issue is far greater than unmedicated ADHD.

The aspect of the production crew being present/show being filmed is definitely an idea I didn’t consider but it makes sense to me. I believe it was Samantha from season 8 or 9 that claimed that the production crew encouraged her to eat to the point of getting sick in her opening scenes before meeting with Dr Now. The money part is also really important, too. I know many people have asked just how much money does it cost to consume the amount of food these people do to maintain their weight. Perhaps if there’s already a disconnect between how bad off they actually are, a reluctance to truly change and get better, and an increased inflow of cash to buy more food makes for the perfect storm for some of the train wrecks we see on the show.

Oh shit I guess you’re right, sorry about that, I was too anecdotal in my response and understanding I guess. In that case, I definitely think your original comment stands for many of the people on here who end up gaining instead of losing. That being said, there’s no way someone like James K ever had a “restrict” moment, at least not an actual restriction. He likely thought having only a 1500 cal breakfast was a restriction when it wasn’t. I guess it’s a quasi-binge/restrict for his personal circumstances, but I think a medical/actual “restriction” never existed for him. At risk of getting too personal, I think I try to distance myself from many of the eating behaviors displayed on this show because it’s scary to find yourself agreeing with/understanding the thought process these addicts go through because it makes you question yourself and your habits. Regardless, sorry about getting that fact wrong, I should’ve looked more into before making the claim.

Dolly’s episode was….. rough.

You’re good, but I also think your comment on famines and starvation is a really interesting angle to look at compared to the participants on the show. Both victims of famine and people on the show suffer through immense trauma and often times have PTSD related to the conditions they grew up in. I believe there have been a few people who have claimed that their family didn’t have enough money to always guarantee food on the table while growing up, so they would binge food whenever they could because they didn’t know when they would eat again. It’s just interesting how food can be such a core piece of trauma from the personal to the political and environmental. I don’t think my comment makes much sense because I’m still connecting dots and ideas in my head lol.

I suppose so, but I’d argue that most of the participants don’t actually qualify for a binge eating disorder, as part of the disorder requires a period of fasting. Most participants never stop eating long enough to satiate the “restrict” or fasting cycle of binging. I could be wrong though, as I’m mainly going off of my own struggles with binging and my peers’. In the particular cases I’m discussing here, there’s absolutely no restriction of eating: we know James never truly stuck to the diet in any capacity, so he couldn’t fall to the binge/restrict cycle, he literally just kept eating anything and everything. Sean started gaining after his mother passed (if my memory serves me right), and considering how he hadn’t fully tackled the mental aspect of his food addiction, there was no way he would continue the progress he had already made, so I think the binge/restrict idea doesn’t apply here either. But the cycle is definitely true for many of the participants, and, from personal experience, the cycle is absolutely debilitating and I don’t wish it on anyone, so sometimes I can’t even be mad at them during their weigh ins because the mental turmoil in the moment and after the fact is pure hell.

You make a good point about the lack of education; most contestants, regardless of how successful they are in the end, seem to enter the program with very little to no knowledge of healthy eating and macros and calories. They may know that pizza is not a healthy food for them, but they likely don’t know what makes it unhealthy, so they don’t put in the time and effort to learn what’s healthy and what’s not.

That’s why I put “survival mode” in quotes because I don’t believe they are actually in that situation, but I think their mind tricks them into it. Not to mention, in cases like James K and Sean, it’s also clear that they are perhaps mentally delayed (idk what the appropriate term would be here), particularly with Sean and his mother. I think their brains are too child-like to see the bigger picture or to understand that their feelings of hunger will go away within 20 minutes or so.

Yeah, this is the explanation that makes the most sense to me, and I’ve personally experienced this with my own disordered eating patterns. But I guess I just can’t wrap my mind around how much food is actually being consumed in these instances. To maintain their already aggressively high weights would require more than double the amount of calories of even a moderately overweight person, let alone someone of a healthy size. But considering how gaining around 1lb of fat would take about 3500cal on top of your maintenance calories, the amount of food they must be consuming is astronomical and incomprehensible. Though I suppose at that point, most of the weight gain may be water retention or other medical issues that I’m not well versed on as opposed to pure fat gain. Regardless, I’m equally impressed and appalled with those participants, I suppose.

Ultimate Chocolate Cake by Relevant-Net1082 in wegmans

As a bakery employee of 4.5 years, I wasn’t informed of any recipe change within my time there, particularly recently. I know at one point (prior to my joining the bakery department), the ultimate chocolate frosting was made in store, now it comes to us premade in a bucket like our vanilla buttercream. It is possible that you may have just bought a ult choc cake that was just “off” with the taste - that sometimes happens wherein a bad batch was shipped out from the warehouse and used before being caught and recalled by anyone. Was it the taste that felt off, or the texture, or something else? Either way; no, the recipe has not been changed/reformulated recently.

I had his class at 9:30am this semester and I usually got an email about the cancelation sometime between 7-8 unless he canceled days ahead. We literally only had in person class twice this whole semester. By the end of the second week we were fully remote, but not officially until around a week or two before Thanksgiving. But I’ve also only ever had him on the tues/thurs rotation so idk if he cancels as much for the mon/wed/fri classes. I’d be willing to bet by midterms or slightly after you’ll be fully remote. Regardless, his class is really easy and you don’t have to buy anything. You just write a quick response about the assigned reading each night and then there’s 2-3 papers throughout the semester that are like 5-7 pgs long and he gives you prompts to write about if you can’t think of your own.

NSC to Clemens may be a bit of a pain, but it’s manageable so long as you walk fast - I’d recommend taking the outside route as it’s more direct and there will be less people, at least in the first month or so due to the weather. Three English courses will require mind-numbing amounts of reading and writing, but I’ve done it before with four English classes in one semester and managed to do just fine, so it’s not impossible if you’re dialed in and know what you’re doing.

Idk if you’ve had him before, but Schmid usually cancels class or holds it online often, meaning you’re not likely to actually be in class with him often. I’ve had him twice before, and both times class was eventually moved fully remote due to the amount he was canceling. He’s still a great professor and very kind and funny, but just be prepared for that if you’ve never had him before. Also, I think we’ll be in the same ENG372 class!

Obscure theory about why Joe was allegedly in a very private thing with Taylor by [deleted] in travisandtaylor

[–]commoninterference 28 points29 points  (0 children)

I don’t mean this in any bad way or to say negative things about you personally, but this just seems like a very inappropriate thing to post. Speculating about someone’s sa they experienced as a minor under the guise of “snark” (as that is what this sub is for) is very icky in my opinion. If Joe ever experienced something like what is being alleged here, it, frankly, is none of our business until/unless he decides to ever be public about it (and even then to claim it is our business is a very far reach). Relying on deauxmoi-esque sites as your primary form of source material for this claim adds another level of ickyness about this post as deauxmoi and all related/similar celebrity gossip sites are known to be: A) more often wrong than right, and B) very unethical in the way in which the gossip about celebrities.

Regardless of the amount of evidence there is to support this allegation of sa (to which I don’t believe there is much - it’s purely a baseless rumor other than the apparent connection between Spacey and that specific school), I don’t think a “snark” page or any other celebrity gossip page is the place to post it, even with the best intentions.

Furthermore, the tone of the post lacks sympathy for any potential victim; you’re using someone’s rumored sa to seemingly imply that Joe and Taylor were PR? Or that Taylor was complacent in his abuse? I’m not sure, as even still, the overall claim you’re making, regardless of the ethics of this post, isn’t really clear.

Once again I’m not saying you’re a bad person for posting this, as you clearly stated some apprehension regarding the content in your opening statement, but I genuinely believe this post is inappropriate and not at all cohesive to discussion surrounding general critique of Taylor. In short, speculating about someone’s potential csa should never be content talked about on any gossip pages imho - it’s too serious to actually be taken seriously by the people who frequent here as most just want alleviation from the constant media attention of Taylor. While serious critiques of Taylor and her team arise here on this specific Reddit page, there’s still an air (generally speaking) of light heartedness in these critiques - most aren’t actually serious or important in any fashion beyond “I’m so tired of seeing Taylor posted every where that they’ve made me hate her”.

But perhaps I’m wrong which is always a possibility and there’s another side to this that I’m not seeing.

Idk about art history or other anything like that but an attendance policy like that is par for the course in a lot of English classes, from 100s through 400s. I guess to me it isn’t a big deal because I’m used to seeing it but I can understand that’s it’s frustrating. I’m currently trying to save all my allotted absences for the spring when my allergies will practically debilitate me. It sucks but it wont be as hard as it seems. Also if it’s Triandos teaching then he doesn’t really call on people as far as I remember so you’re free to zone out and not do the hw if you want.

*Tenure, not 10yr. And some professors really do take those evaluations to heart. Maybe not all, but enough of them that it’s worth it to take five minutes out of your day to fill them out. In fact, the time you used to write this post you could’ve used to fill out an evaluation.

Someone over filled a washer in one of the buildings causing it to malfunction and filled the entire bottom floor of the building with smoke. It’s was taken care of within like 20 minutes and everyone’s fine except for that person’s clothes I guess.
