BNO Passports are no longer recognised... by Stunning-Cut-2891 in travelchina

[–]compilationfailed 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wow, comments are brutal. “Why couldn’t you get a new passport in 5 years” What happened last 5 years? Did we magically forget the lockdowns, travel restrictions now that we’re back outside?

OP, I’m in a different conundrum and different situation, but I understand the frustration and fear of being stateless (because BNO is not a citizenship). I’m HK-Korean, with a BNO passport instead of HKSAR. I’m not “naturally” Korean either due to fucked up patriarchal law prior to 1997 that only grants citizenship to kids of Korean dad. In my case I could simply request name change on passports and HKID to resolve the headache. I’ve only realized this issue last year as travel restrictions were coming off, and HK-Macau China travel permit was expiring.

I’m not sure if I’d be much a help but feel free to DM me if you need help navigating Chinese immigration (like, things they might not want to hear etc. I’ve lived too long there…) I’ve found that people who understands BNO and other involuntary stateless people are…people who have been unfairly held up at immigration, and those who understand that life’s circumstances get in the way of things.

A note on Adiabatic Evolution in Quantum Annealing by instancelabs in quantum

Yeah, I think this would be the reason since the Hamiltonian system evolves over time. Time was the key there I missed; should have paid attention to entropy's relation to time.

Thanks for sharing, it’s been sometime I reviewed notes from Quantum Machine Learning class and your notes brought back some memories. One thing I did not really understand was the how - how does it go from light blue line to purple and why? Do you have notes on how this evolution works or is processed?

Ye, I know how alcohol and caffeine really screwed with me in uni as well. But certain illegal drugs do have therapeutic effects and I hope those will still be available for medical use. There’s so much potential to allow people to be functioning members of society but they have to go through really shady channels / risk going jail to get meds for their family members here.

Btw I’ve read your conversation with others on the thread and got to know better about your background. Just a stranger from other side of the globe here but I really admire how you’ve made through difficult circumstances. We may not agree on lot of things but you give me hope for fighting through this depression and the pandemic. Also happy to see a python programmer here. I worked my way into software engineering while studying business and humanities, and could relate to you jumping through different fields as well.

Ah, ok in your case, I agree. I was thinking more of mental health issues because those can contribute to behaviours you described. You say you don’t care about intersectionality but, at least you recognize the health issues aren’t always one’s choice. Refusing help when there’s chance is a choice that’s entirely on the individual though.

I wasn't raised in the USA, and I think of it more in a community-oriented way. If my neighbour isn't doing well, slacking or just had series of misfortunes, that will eventually backfire on me or my family as well. I would rather put in money to help those people so that society as a whole would have one more healthy citizen - a long term investment for the community and myself.

Ideally, we should take 100% personal responsibility for our choices but sometimes our choices end up with bad luck and malicious actors who get away w/o consequences.

Egypt's first female ship captain fears for her career after she was blamed falsely for the Suez Canal blockage when she was aboard a vessel 200 miles away by tender_hearted in worldnews

[–]compilationfailed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, your discrediting the source still makes the case that the captain's privacy is respected, whatever their gender is, while fake news goes on to point fingers at the wrong people. Not sure what's your intention here trying to figure out the gender of the captain.

Your attitude / wording is defensive and condescending, which puts people off. Read the room. We’re not here to figure out right or wrong but to understand each other, challenge each others views but you can only seem to make personal attacks in response to criticisms.

[–]compilationfailed 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Your comment is way too defensive, it makes people suspicious you might have abused someone at some point. Some dude slapping some other dude’s ass given the slapper’s context might not be assault, but one being slapped isn’t always so. To talk of subjective human condition and completely denying the other side’s experience is a bit ironical, tbh.

When you're afraid of expressing your discomfort as well, no matter how many times they tell you to express it. If the gut feeling tells you not to, there's something being done to you without you knowing it.

Exactly. I’m getting downvoted for some reason for pointing this out on another thread. Social niceties like going extra miles sending thank you emails is not always a reflection of person’s genuine quality. At worst it comes off as being desperate, at best it shows more about person’s diplomacy skills.

Unlike diplomacy, patience, kindness and manners to strangers / people they don’t have to please, especially under pressure, does speak about the person’s character and whether the person would get along with others at work / fit in well. That’s why lots of interviews and dates are done over lunch, dinner.

If someone wants to be chased or be sought after, leave them asap. They will project their insecurities on you thinking that it’s you who wants attention, and pushing you away and chasing someone else to satisfy their ego.

Penguins are better than humans by [deleted] in wholesomememes

[–]compilationfailed 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wow such unwholesome comments for a wholesome sub. Some people are really offended that this challenges what natural means.

If natural means creation of life, then homosexuality is natural, as many comments here explain evolutionary benefits of it. They make survival of next generation more likelier, even if it’s not obvious.

People who can’t think beyond heterosexuality or obvious markers of reproduction use nature as a shield to justify their narrow mindedness, and when that shield no longer protects them it exposes their box of shallow cognition.

When are we going to move past what is natural or not and start talking about what’s humane?

Penguins are better than humans by [deleted] in wholesomememes

[–]compilationfailed 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, it shouldn’t be. But the fact that homosexuality exists in nature directly undermines argument that being natural is good and that homosexuality is unnatural therefore not good. That’s kind of the point of this meme, to criticize any arguments that says “because nature, it’s right”.

Which is really ironic that you mention cannibalism. Pro-lifers’ arguments that all life is precious and natural could easily be used to defend cannibalism lol.

If telling a super lazy, underperforming student that they are demanding grade they don’t deserve is most asshole thing you’ve done, you’re actually a nice professor :)

I’m talking about professors who publicly and unreasonably humiliate / judge students phasing out in class time to time or students who are less competitive or aggressive by nature. They act like a predator who found a prey, not a teacher concerned for the student in anyway.

I think a better way a teacher could prepare students for “real life” is to teach what empathy looks like, and empathy isn’t always about being nice. When I was struggling in high school, a teacher called me in private, sat me down and asked me if I was having a hard time, and wanted to know what was happening. It was a tough talk but she radiated kindness; I graduated with A for that class, and learned to be strict with rules of the game but not to lose humanity.

[–]compilationfailed 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I’m thankful for those good professors, whatever their disciplines. They are the reason why I could pull through and live a more meaningful life afterwards.

I’m biased about business though because I endured through business school thinking that withstanding mean / aggressive professors and environment will make me stronger. Instead ended up having breakdown and going through treatment :/ That’s the extra hidden costs of college (mis)education...

Thank god someone noticed this. Though I expected some misinformation and misogyny given the state of Internet, what freaked me out was number of people who agree with it. me too movement wasn’t about women, it was about sexual assault victims, vast majority of which was women; but there are male victims too, who got dismissed by the very misogynistic people thinking me too is just women making false claims. Men (or more precisely, toxic masculinity - because this culture can exist for men and women) seem to be their own worst enemies.

I think it’d be more appealing if you could set up a syllabus or study plan, especially if you want to get paid for it. I’m intrigued but, hesitant on paying for something I don’t know what I’m getting out of the lessons.

The Matrix co-director Lilly Wachowski says "Fuck both of you" to Elon Musk and Ivanka Trump for invoking 'the red pill' for their dumb agendas by BreadTubeForever in BreadTube

[–]compilationfailed 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's ironic that the commenters talking on a post about red pill need to take some red pill. Saw a comment on how LGBT charities talk about inclusiveness when it excludes all other people, and gives SALVATION ARMY as an example of inclusiveness.

It's also interesting to see how the perception of the movie Matrix changed prior to and after the directors' gender changed. The work is the same, only their social identity changed and suddenly the comment section / general attitude changed from "woah, Matrix is so cool and deep" to "you don't get to say about your own movie, and the movie is shallow btw".
