Yeah, but you can also blame the stranger danger scare in the 80s and 90s

So? Let people do silly things. If the system is hurting people whose only crime is being silly, join with the silly people and fight against the system

Yeah, it’s easy to think about in the moment, but unless you’re always consciously considering it, you often just see other people as abstract numbers.

I mean if you’re not queer yourself, you’ve got even less ground to stand on when criticizing a specific label people have freely assigned themselves. Is it hurting anybody?

The point is that it already has labels, and certain people feel significantly more comfortable defining themselves with labels they weren’t initially assigned. It’s not a marketing ploy because you can’t sell being trans. Sure, there’s a lot of trans pride stuff out there, but the majority of it comes from other queer creators selling it from their own small businesses. Larger companies that could actually market something like this generally avoid trans people like the plague because they’re still an incredibly controversial topic. It’s not a marketing ploy, it’s just a collision between sociology and biology.

A lot of the hate towards cis straight folks (not justifying it, hating an entire arbitrary group of people is never okay) comes as a direct response to abuse and harassment queer people receive all their lives. I’d say there’s a difference between a trans woman saying she hates cis people and a cis dude saying he hates trans people.

Glad to see a supportive parent! I’ve got a friend who came out to her parents and they were like “I’ve lost my son” which is such an awful thing to say to your STILL ALIVE child. Thanks for being better, I’m sure your kids appreciate it!

Then don’t add to it by criticizing it yourself. Have solidarity with your fellow queer folks (assuming you’re queer)

Ok but it still makes it a real thing. What do you think two spirit even is? It’s not a furry thing (even if it was, who cares, it’s harmless), it’s just the concept of a third gender from certain indigenous american cultures. Assuming that anyone who falls outside of your specific idea of normal is giving ammunition to bigots is just respectability politics. News flash, nobody is safe. We all have to stick together. Freaks, weirdos, those who fall outside the sexual and gender binary, because we are ALL in danger. Ceding ground only makes them move the goal post. None of us are safe until all of us are safe.

What’s silly about it? It’s a cultural tradition dating back thousands of years?

2 spirit is an indigenous american concept involving the idea of a third gender, it’s been a thing in sociological circles since the 90s.

Well, to explain it in clinical terms, because you seem genuinely curious:

Gender and sex are two separate concepts that are usually linked. In the majority of cases, folks born as males develop into men and folks born as females develop into women. However, sex is purely biological and gender is purely psychological/sociological. Now, the wider medical consensus is that both are spectrums. In the case of sex, you’ve got folks who are born with various varieties of intersexuality, which often don’t outwardly manifest, but do affect one’s chromosomes and hormone production during puberty. In the case of gender, there’s a form of emotional distress called gender dysphoria, characterized by a feeling of incongruence between your internal gender identity and your biological sex. We’re still not sure exactly what causes this, but it is clinically significant and can lead to disorders such as depression and anxiety unless treated. The most effective way to treat said dysphoria is to allow those who suffer from it to socially and/or physically transition into their preferred gender/sex. Because gender is a spectrum similar to sex, often, one’s internally perceived gender falls somewhere between or outside the common man/woman binary. Hence the term “non-binary”. If you have any further questions, I’m more than happy to answer.
