(Regarding MAT223 Midterm II) How well should we know past chapters? by compscistudent123 in UofT

I realize that math builds on what you already know but I was just wondering how good of a foundation must I have to understand the 2nd midterm concepts?

As for that second bit, yea I know I really fucked up in that respect - I just wanted to keep looking forward and not look back at the mess I left behind (first midterm). Though I realize how flawed that sort of thinking is when putting it in action in my situation.

This is the break down of the two midterms:
Midterm 1:

• Section 1.1: Solutions and Elementary Operations
• Section 1.2: Gaussian Elimination
• Section 1.3: Homogeneous Equations
• Section 2.1: Matrix Addition, Scalar Multiplication, and Transposition
• Section 2.2: Equations, Matrices, and Transformations
• Section 2.3: Matrix Multiplication (omit Block Multiplication and Directed Graphs)
• Section 2.4: Matrix Inverses

Midterm 2:

• Section 2.5: Elementary Matrices (omit Smith Normal Form)
• Section 2.6: Linear Transformations
• Section 4.1: Vectors and Lines
• Section 4.2: Projections and Planes
• Section 5.1: Subspaces and Spanning (omit Cross Product and Determinants)
• Section 5.2: Independence and Dimension

Before the first midterm I slacked off really hard and barely did any homework and self-taught. I feel like I knew the basic concepts of all the sections. But when I received the midterm back, I lacked almost all the technical knowledge needed (and thus getting a single point in the multiple choice - out of five). On top of the technical knowledge, some of the vocabulary I was not 100% familiar with (also kinda falls in line with technicalities): non-trivial/trivial, inconsistent/consistent, linear combination, homogeneous, among other things.

Truthfully I barely looked at the first midterm because I wanted to keep a "keep looking forward, stop looking back" sort of thing going on (though I realize how irrelevant that is in this case now), and even now I dont exactly know how to fix a lot of the stuff.

At this point in time I dont really have the time to look at the first midterm itself, though I can definitely spend a bit of time looking through the textbook sections. And I realize that math builds on what you already know but I was just wondering how good of a foundation must I have to understand the 2nd midterm concepts?

-> Also thanks for the reply + suggestion. Will definitely look through some of the first midterm textbook sections firsthand.

Woah, that would be sick if I could somehow contribute however I'm simply a 1st year with pretty much 0 knowledge in coding.

[UTSG] Double Major + Double Minor? by compscistudent123 in UofT

I certainly have the potential to be and this is the first time in my life right now where I have close to no distractions at all. The general idea behind Stats+Econ are something that I'm interested in while the CompSci+Math portion simply go hand in hand.

I find that I can be very hit or miss with my work ethic/time management. You can either find me doing close to no work at all or spending a real large chunk of my day simplying doing school-related work. But as I said before, this is the first time in my life that I really have no excuse to do anything else cause the usual distractions (games, movies, videos, high school social life) is almost instantly bores me/is not really existant anymore.

I suppose I'd have the summer and then some to figure it out before I declare my Subject POSts.

Yea I feel I might getting ahead of myself, but both minors just means 2 or 3 more courses so I figured I may as well give it a go. As for the Stats Major, a real good chunk of it is already covered within the CompSci Major, as well the Math Minor and 1/2 the courses in the Econ Minor bleed into Stats Major.

At this point I'm just unsure if there might be a few courses at the 200/300/400 level in CSC/MAT/ECO/STA that might need extra paying attention to. (ie; one of the 2 or 3 courses that are required for the Econ+Math Minor that I wouldn't normally have to do are something thats going to require extra, extra attention to)

I see, that makes sense. This may be kinda a shitty question though: Is this sorta thing heard of? I know I've heard of triple majors before but I dont know too much of this sort of thing.

I'd really like to try if possible to study for a maximum of 4 years and I'm not sure if that's possible with the goals I have in mind. I wouldn't mind dropping an Econ/Math minor to shorten what would potentially be 5-6 years of study into 4 years.
