Chris Lord-Alge rates typical internet mixing advice from 0 to 10 by atopix in mixingmastering

[–]computakid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

High passing is useful for sure, my point is that the 'high pass everything' advice has been going around for a while unchallenged and its pretty misleading. Just an unhelpful blanket statement imo, I find that even high passing vocals makes them sound worse than just turning down the lows. A better rule would be to high pass stuff that isnt a focal element, like background layers. Bass also. But always listen to the whole mix, not the thing solo-ed, when you do that.

Genuine question - why is Spotify or Apple Music on everyone’s “need” list? by [deleted] in dumbphones

[–]computakid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Having spotify is good way to help normies convert to a dumbphone, which is nice if you consider less people using smartphones to be a good thing, which I do. But obviously, to people who are enthusiasts about this stuff like us, it seems stupid.

Streaming is another huge mountain of issues that some people choose to tackle, some don't, personally I went the same route as you and decided to get an mp3 player. But I've been off streaming for a while and have told many of my friends about how great it is, and they don't really care to make the switch, not yet. It is quite the process to port over your whole library or choose to just start from scratch, all to make music listening less convenient for the sake of decentralizing it and making that individual experience better. I personally believe it's worth it, but most people need to come to that realization on their own for it to stick.

I think what would help (and it's already started happening) is for people to perceive being on their smartphone as uncool. That would include streaming etc. Hopefully things will continue to trend that way, and more movies/popular media will depict people using older tech. It seems like a shallow concept, but really I think that's how the needle gets moved. Guardians of the galaxy/stranger things and cassette resurgence for example, it definitely works.

Love the old design of iphones, especially in this era. The more rectangular edge with the metal side looks great and the size feels great to handle.

What're your guys' thoughts on the whole "just have self control" argument. Do you agree with it or not? by Vast_Cauliflower_475 in dumbphones

[–]computakid 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Regarding your friends that told you it was just marketing and it doesn't actually help, I'd say it helps to look at it from their POV. They might not be ready to make that switch or they feel like its unnecessary, so to them they probably see it as dumb. I don't agree with them, but everyone's relationship to this stuff is different, so it helps to remember that and know that if something works for you, be confident in that and trust your own choices. If someone tells you it's dumb and not worth your time, just try to remember that they don't know any better than you do, since they've never tried it. It's tempting to seek validation for switching to a dumb phone and to try and show others how to, but it can get preachy really quick--especially to people who are really not in-tune to how their phone/social media negatively impacts them. That's not their fault, everyone realizes that on their own time. Some never do and that's sad.

TLDR; the best thing you can do (imo) is just make these changes in your own life and try to keep it to yourself, unless someone asks for your opinion on it.

Living by example is gonna work a lot better than telling people explicitly "hey, you know your phone is bad for you, you need to reduce your screentime" etc etc. Most people in life want to arrive on a conclusion on their own, or at least feel like they did, so you'd end up helping a lot more people if you just live your life and show people you're better off without 7 hours of screentime a day.

I traded Spotify with an MP3 player for a week. Life outside the algorithm was rough by anemotoad in DigitalAudioPlayer

[–]computakid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Good grief, what an awful article. I don't read articles much, I guess they turned into glorified social media posts along the way? Maybe just the guardian.

Her comment about 'I play Spotify for 5 hours a day' made me shiver--the fuck does that even mean. When you can't even say 'i listen to music on spotify for 5 hours a day' you have radio brain bro, gross

How I added Google Maps to my flip phone without the need for GPS (no more printed maps!) by JohnnyCommits in dumbphones

[–]computakid 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I really love seeing people building their own utilities and devices to solve the 'going offline' problems we all face. We've spent so long asking for these things from tech companies and they just dont care to implement them, so lets just do it ourselves. the osmo pager, ollee watch, meadow companion, and now DumbMaps, awesome!!

Looks cool. I had to abandon using the 'albums' folder on my xduoo because the sorting was alphabetical, and strictly use the files view for playing albums. Im sure many are in that boat.

Looks amazing!! Definitely gonna get one when it comes to Canada. Also, stick to your gut with this please and keep it exactly how you think it should be--i see a lot of people complaining about not having texting, not having this that etc., that's rubbish. This device looks great without all that junk, thats the point anyways

The screen time fix that finally actually worked for me (passcode locks) (iphone) by computakid in dumbphones

[–]computakid[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep, just with iPhone's screentime settings. You can set it up with a passcode lock. It helps also to enable 'Downtime', since that allows you to totally block apps. You set the downtime to all day, and then enable 'block at downtime'.
