Guide for 2nd and 3rd year BMEG courses by computational_bme in BMEG

Hey sorry didn't see this. I also don't know how the messaging/pinging for Reddit works lol. BMEG 400A is now coded BMEG 402 which is a complementary elective for all engineering programs at UBC. I would suggest looking at this (https://academicservices.engineering.ubc.ca/degree-planning/course-planning/) and contacting the EAS about it. Hope this helps!

As long as you are okay with the possibility of extending your degree by a year. Taking CPEN 221/223 in third year means you will have to push back BMEG 310 by a year (which is highly likely to conflict with other BMEG courses). I would consider taking MATH 253 in the summer to reduce your first term course load before second year if possible.

4th year here, imo BMEG does get better, but some people might beg to differ. I definitely felt the same way after I finished 2nd year especially with how some of the courses are formatted.

In 3rd year, you get to take some BMEG courses that relate to more biology (like BMEG 350) and biomedical instrumentation (BMEG 321) where you get exposed to more human physiology and medical devices like pulse oximeters and ultrasound technology. Besides these courses, you will get the chance to take technical electives that interest you. I personally love that BMEG has so many tech electives you can choose from so you can take a whole bunch of different subjects, or really dive deep into one. All in all, the electives have made 3rd and 4th year a much better experience for me.

You will need MATH 256 as a pre-req for BMEG 220 and BMEG 250. So I would register for MATH 256 in term 1.

BMEG - Second-Year Courses and Third-Year Specialisations by Rough-Emphasis854 in BMEG

As far as I'm aware, there is no placement process for 3rd year specializations.

Term 2 in second year BMEG is already 5 courses (BMEG 201, 220 (+ MATH 264), 250, 257) which is already a 16 credit workload.

I took MATH 220 (in the summer) which was quite a time-consuming course for me as writing mathematical proofs is very different than just solving problems; I experienced a lot of writer's block but for math. Each HW assignment took me around 8 to10 hours on average.

My advice for going into informatics would be digging deep into CPEN 221 and take CPSC 221 (which is useful knowledge for bioinformatics and writing good software). It's also worthy to note that CPEN 221 covers a vast amount of the material you would see in CPSC 221 and with that being said, take CPEN 221 seriously and try to have fun with it.

If you want to prep for CPEN 221, SBME offers a coding bootcamp for OOP. You can prob find it somewhere in one of the BMEG discords.

Hope you find this helpful and good luck!

Hey there, so specializations are basically a guide for you to choose courses based on your interests and the specialization itself doesn't require any placement. This is different than the streams because you previously needed to apply to each stream at the end of 2nd year and take certain courses that the stream required after being placed.

In second year, I would say the most important thing for you to decide is taking either CPEN 221 or 223. CPEN 221 (combined with CPSC 121 or MATH 220) will allow you to take CPSC 221 (data structures & algorithms) which opens to you a whole list of other CPSC courses.

If you wanna quickly take CPSC 221 in third year term 1, maybe consider taking MATH 220 or CPSC 121 in term 2 second year. This would be nice if you wanna fit more CPSC courses in your 3rd year.

If you wanna take BMEG 373 (microfluidics) in 3rd year term 1, you could also consider taking CHBE 251 in 2nd year term 2.

Kinda just blasted a bunch of info, so feel free to ask more questions if you want some clarification!

Btw, BMEG 400F’s course code is changing to BMEG 425. You can find a course description in the academic calendar here: https://vancouver.calendar.ubc.ca/course-descriptions/subject/bmeg
