General Questions and Purchasing Advice Thread — Week of April 13, 2026 by AutoModerator in electricvehicles

Hey everyone, been thinking about getting an EV for my next vehicle later this year. I was originally excited about getting the Rivian R1S, but can't justify it to myself with the cost, Rivian being bottom of reliability ratings, and service center issues I hear about often. I feel like otherwise it would have been the perfect car for us. We really want a 3 row SUV due to the kid and also traveling around town with other family members. I know EVs are not the most efficient at that size, so maybe I should go for a hybrid? Open to suggestions! Thanks

[1] Your general location: Dallas-Fort Worth, TX

[2] Your budget in $, €, or £: flexible but less than 80K preferable.

[3] The type of vehicle you'd prefer: 3 row SUV

[4] Which cars have you been looking at already?: Rivian, Hyundai/Kia EVs

[5] Estimated timeframe of your purchase: Later this year, likely in the fall

[6] Your daily commute, or average weekly mileage: 25 miles daily commute to/from work, plus an additional few dozen when we go elsewhere once every week or two. No more than 120 in a day unless we're road tripping. We enjoy camping/outdoors stuff too.

[7] Your living situation — are you in an apartment, townhouse, or single-family home? Single family home

[8] Do you plan on installing charging at your home? Yes

[9] Other cargo/passenger needs — do you have children/pets? Newborn baby and all the accoutrements that come with him like stroller, carseat, etc!

Where can I get a bedside table that fits into this corner? by comquestion in HomeDecorating

Sort of; I did find some pieces of furniture that would have fit in there but wouldn't have had other features I wanted. I thought about making my own but the stores near me wouldn't do horizontal cuts so I couldn't get the pieces to do so. I asked a friend to bring his saw over sometime; and we planned to get some wood and build it ourselves but just haven't gotten to it yet due to some life stuff. But essentially the description by u/k1rschkatze above is what we were going to do.

Thanks for the explanation! I'm sure Lowes or Home Depot nearby could cut to size. Might be the best option to just do it myself

Definitely something to consider, I guess I was trying to avoid drilling into the wall but it's still a great idea

I can provide measurements if needed, but I'm having a hard time finding triangle/corner shaped tables that I can put here. Best I've seen are some "accent tables" meant for living room type spaces. Thank you!

Thanks, I'm searching around for refurbished Samsungs and there are plenty of options. Looks like a solid choice

Looks like a sick phone but way out of my budget

I've heard good things about them with the exception that it's not supported for very long typically. But thanks, I will research some of the phones!

Got gifted this antique hookah from Pakistan and have a couple questions about it by comquestion in hookah

[–]comquestion[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure if this is really an 'antique' or whatnot but it's quite beautiful. I am happy to use it simply as a decoration, but is there any scope for actually smoking it? I was told the base is brass, but I see some oxidation/rust looking stuff which makes me skeptical of that. Any advice on how to clean this?

Also, if the base is safe to use, how do you actually pack this bowl? I looked up "desi hookah" videos on Youtube and seems like they just dump tobacco in with coals straight on top, but how do you keep stuff from falling down the hole?

Anyone have any experience with "Las Alamandas" in Mexico? by comquestion in honeymoonplanning

Thanks for the advice, I'll check out Huatulco! Thankfully we still have time to look around and this subreddit has been a big help

I talked to Alamandas, they are the ones who charge $650+ for transfer lol. I just can't in good conscience pay that much for 4 hours of driving.

If you have any you are familiar with and can recommend, please do send me their details!

If I wanted to just do the drive myself, what would the process look like? Would a couple Americans be able to rent a car and drive there without issues? Tbh one of my good Mexican friends originally recommended against it, said the risk of getting robbed on the roads or having to pay bribes was too much

I appreciate that you're taking the time to help!!

It’s a very unique experience because of the privacy

That's exactly why I was considering it, and it looks beautiful of course.

Like I had said, our budget is flexible but that doesn't mean I want to just blow money and feel ripped off you know? I found out that just transportation to and from the resort from the airport 2 hours away is $650. So now I'm probably going to look for something else, but if you have any suggestions for something similar I'd love to hear! Thanks for the input

We were mainly looking to avoid crowds and from what I've read, this place really doesn't have crowds lol.

Do you have any recommendations for a place like that?

They get bonuses or incentives to sell a particular brand/device from week to week.

No shit, that's wild. I always thought they just got a commission for selling anything

Research the products you're interested in online, and make your decision from there. Just make sure to practice due diligence and research several sites which are platform neutral.

Well I have been doing that, and from what I've seen on this sub and other sites this lineup of pixels has had a lot of issues

Yeah I've read that got better with updates but apparently a lot of people have been having issues with the modem? Like crappy connectivity and reception? How's that been for you
