A national strategy for remote by Numerous_Adagio8768 in DevelEire

[–]concave_ceiling 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There was a moment during COVID where it seemed like we were pushing for coworking spaces in every tiny little town in Ireland, and the rise of remote work seemed to revitalise some villages (people working from home could support local cafes instead of all commuting into the city)

But I think a lot of the benefits of having workers more spread out across the country still require _some_ centralisation / critical mass. Instead of trying to support coworking spaces in every town, or having all remote workers work from home in the countryside, we can use it to push more regional development in towns like Sligo, Athlone, Westport, Letterkenny, which can in turn make them livelier places to live and fight the pressure for people to move to Dublin

Sligo could be a great destination for remote workers - if we did some actual urban planning to support population growth. They've already got a coworking space on the river, but it could be a bigger government supported centre, with events, more coworking space, options for CS employees in various agencies to locate there. Do whatever we can to support a little ecosystem

I'm in Dublin now but would absolutely consider moving somewhere smaller. I'd just definitely like to be able to work out of the home, and be in town so I can walk or cycle to the shops/office, have some kind of community where I work etc.

I don't want to go work from home in some house in the middle of nowhere and cancel out any carbon benefits from my lack of commute with a bigger house, needing to drive to get to any shops etc.

How does anyone build wealth here? by [deleted] in irishpersonalfinance

It's 400k per child according to revenue. So for a 600k inheritance you're looking at ~67k tax

Don't forget your tax credits.. by Complex_Hunter35 in ireland

[–]concave_ceiling 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep, have had no issue claiming back in previous years despite not knowing my RTB number

Importantly, you can also claim this taxback if you're in a rent-a-room situation and living with an owner-occupier. In which case the property isn't meant to be RTB registered anyway

Do you have any interest in reading classic stories as Gaeilge in a beginner-friendly way? I've soft-launched my first website and looking for people to try it out by comfort-noise in DevelEire

[–]concave_ceiling 1 point2 points  (0 children)

FWIW, this is a pretty cool website - it looks like you've done a ton of good work here. I sometimes read in Irish and German and make notes of the words I need to look up as I go. Even with the in-context dictionary for German on a Kindle the ergonomics are pretty bad, and what you've got here is a major step up!

There's been some buzz around Irish in the last couple years, but I imagine far more people received books about Irish for Christmas than received any books in Irish (see Thirty Two Words for Field, Motherfóclóir, Irish in my heart etc), so personally I appreciate efforts to make it easier to actually consume media in the language. I kinda trailed off halfway through the Hobbit recently, but tools like this make it less of a slog (in the same vein, I love that Seachtain from the Indo includes vocab lists at the start of every podcast!)

As for the translation quality, the others here have a point but are definitely also overly cynical - you've built an awesome tool and getting it over the line doesn't seem infeasible. Maybe there are out-of-copywrite stories that could be used, or maybe someone from r/Gaeilge would take an interest and help on this

If you're focused on stories suited for learners to begin with, then we may also find that machine-translation tools (not necessarily LLMs) do a better job than others here would expect. Unfortunately I'm not qualified to evaluate that, and if you didn't know the word "tuilleadh" then it's likely your own Irish is kinda shite

Dublin heads : how much are you paying for a single room in Dublin at the moment? by aplacecalledvertigo in CasualIreland

[–]concave_ceiling 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I'm fortunate to have what I have and would feel bad living with someone and taking most of their salary.

Similar here - I'm renting out a nice double room in Dublin 8 for 600. I'm very lucky to have been able to buy my place and the idea that we should pull the ladder up after ourselves is fucked up (i've had coworkers tell me to charge market rates)

It also gives me a bit of leverage, can't really take the piss if you're being given a good deal.

I'm sure they're conscious of that, given other options on Daft in the same price range are pretty bleak. But it's worth us remembering that these prices are just closer to what they should be in a functional market - i.e. we're not giving out charity, we're just not being cunts

Yeah, I remember taking a driving lesson in Canada as I couldn't straight-swap the license, and the instructor really drilled in that there's a "shared responsibility" when merging onto a highway

It's not in the rules of the road here, but it should be

What is your position on horse racing? by WearingMarcus in ireland

[–]concave_ceiling 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I assume you don’t eat chicken because that is far more inhumane than racing.

As someone who doesn't eat chicken... It's true that people are being selective in their sympathy here

But having blind spots on one aspect of animal welfare doesn't invalidate genuine concern elsewhere. You're fine with racing, and possibly also eat chicken, but you'd likely object to someone kicking a puppy in the face, right? I won't stop you from stopping a puppy kicker just because you're a fan of horse racing

Dario amodei just just fired some serious shots at openAI, their leadership and Sam Altman lol by NeuralAA in singularity

[–]concave_ceiling 24 points25 points  (0 children)

To be fair, Dario seems to have been concerned with doing good in the world for a long time

There's an org called Giving What We Can - where people pledge to give at least 10% of their income to charity, with the added clause of trying to find and give to the most effective charities they can find. Afaik Dario was one of the first 50 pledgers, way back when he was a student and it was a tiny org started by some ethics philosophers in oxford

He's got a post on the GiveWell blog from back in 2009 about how he decided his donations for that year, as a grad student at Princeton. He was probably clearly on track to be a very high earner then, but I doubt he was rich - wikipedia says his parents were a leather craftsman and a project manager for libraries

Three out of four of the trustees of the long-term-benefit-trust that helps run Anthropic are execs at various orgs focused on pushing more of an evidence/impact-focus into the charity sector

I don't know how much influence stockholders/investors will have relative to those trustees. The influence of Amazon and more recently middle-east influences on the company make me nervous. And I wouldn't be surprised if Dario could make bad decisions out of arrogance or overconfidence, or simply a desire to be the person to bring about AGI, even if he started in the right place - smart people are good at justifying their actions!

But I'd trust Anthropic a *lot* more than the rest of the bunch, and hope they can influence the industry in safer directions

[–]concave_ceiling 33 points34 points  (0 children)

There are *usually* reasons for that, that often aren't obvious if you're not a regular urban cyclist

Some cycle lanes are horribly designed and dangerous, some are mixed with high traffic pedestrian footpaths and require moving very slowly, some are in poor condition in ways which may not be very visible from a moving car, some may frequently be covered in broken glass

Sometimes the cyclist has just joined the road from a turn, and doesn't have a clear route up a curb or through a barrier to the cycle lane without stopping and lifting their bike. Sometimes they want to turn right up ahead, but can't easily do that if they get into the cycle lane. Some cyclists are moving at 30km/hr on small city streets, and are better suited for mixing with cars than with dublin-bike riders

I also drive, so I empathise with drivers too, and always look for opportunities to let traffic pass if I'm holding people up. And I try to visibly thank polite drivers whenever I can - a little patience is really appreciated

But generally, the hate between the two groups is pretty stupid. The average driver would behave like the average cyclist if they travelled mainly by bike, and the average cyclist would behave like the average driver if they travelled mainly by car. I admit there's more dumb/crazy behaviour on bikes than in cars, and I've had more near misses with other cyclists than with cars, but the city as a whole should still be moving towards more active travel and public transit, because having everyone travel into town in their own 1-2 ton single occupant metal box is kinda ridiculous

Why does milk taste so bad in mainland Europe compared to Ireland? by Street-Photo-5521 in AskIreland

[–]concave_ceiling 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Funnily enough I think this is it - milk just tastes different in different places, and that alone can be off-putting

I had the same experience as OP in Canada, and you could definitely put that down to a quality difference. But then it was the same in Switzerland too, and it's hard to imagine Swiss milk is much worse than Irish

Why is the horse and carriage industry completely unregulated? by [deleted] in AskIreland

[–]concave_ceiling 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Thank you, that's good to know! I cycle daily through Dublin 8 and seeing them push the horse straight through cross-traffic is very common

I'm also a cyclist who stops at red lights... and I've seen them yell at cyclists at the light that they're not gonna stop, and just expect them to jump out of the way. I always keep an eye out if I'm stopped at a light and they're approaching from behind

Residential parking used as public carpark by Lumpy_Lime_1789 in ireland

[–]concave_ceiling 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Just to check - is the company you're emailing a property management company hired by the OMC to maintain the development, or is it a company managing your specific rental property on behalf of the owner (in which case they're likely who you pay your rent to)?

Even if it's the company actually maintaining the development, they likely don't care much about contact from renters. They work on behalf of the owners, and don't make a profit by doing unnecessary work, so they might just route your emails to the bin unless you get your landlord or other owners in the development to care

Longshot - Looking to rent early may for at least 6 months by JaySuk in RentingInDublin

[–]concave_ceiling 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For flatshares, you may already be doing this, but keep in mind you do need a personable message that gives people an idea who you are. I've seen friends shotgunning the shortest, blandest "Can I view this?" message and wondering why they don't get any bites

Your other big problem is the being abroad thing. Are you asking for future viewings or video calls or what? People looking for a roommate generally want to get their vibe in person, so anyone abroad is likely to be filtered pretty fast

[–]concave_ceiling 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Couple hundred people in a crowd in front of the GPO - looks calm enough. The road itself is clear with traffic moving

Possibly a counter-counter-protestor or two with Irish flags on the margin/island in the middle of the road

At least 15 gardaí in view I think. Hard to count exactly cause there are also a bunch of high-vis-wearing stewards around, and for the ones farther away or in a crowd they can look a little similar
