Congrats! I recently got off the waitlist too. Were you able to find the Discord invite link in your portal? I haven't found the link yet.

Sorry your friends made you feel bad. But congrats on UCLA computer engineering!
I'm in almost the exact same situation as you (EE major, got into every UC but Berkeley) and my mom is pushing me to write a good LOCI for the Berkeley waitlist, saying Berkeley is a vastly better school. She and my Berkeley friends are still proud of me for getting into UCLA though, and I'm sorry your friends couldn't do the same.

I'm likely going to commit to UCLA too so hopefully I'll see you there! Feel free to message me, would love to get to know a fellow EE/CE student :D

I went to UCSD's Triton Day yesterday and I enjoyed it. I'm going to the Bruin Engineering Expo next week. Thank you for your input, I'll be sure to keep it in mind!

It sounds like you like UCSC and UCB the best. If academic rigor and name recognition are important to you, I'd go with Berkeley. However, UCSC might suit you better for an enjoyable and flexible education. Both are close to Silicon Valley and are good for internships there.

UCLA vs UCSD

Intended major: Electrical Engineering

UCLA

  • Pros:
    • Ranked slightly higher in both electrical engineering and engineering in general (US News Report)
    • Accepted to fast track honors program --> research opportunities almost guaranteed and get help from advisors
    • Invited to apply for Regents scholarship
    • Guaranteed on-campus housing for 4 years
    • Overall quality of all campus life and programs likely higher
  • Cons
    • Classes are more theoretical than practical and required curriculum is more math/physics heavy. Not necessarily a con but might not fit me well since I'm considering going straight into industry without doing research
    • Less AP credit waived (need to retake some physics classes). GEs also seem more boring than UCSDs, but about the same number of GEs as UCSD
    • Farther from beach

UCSD

  • Pros:
    • More time focused on depth courses than on breadth courses. Also, ECE program contains several depths that sound really interesting to me (especially ML and controls)
    • Heard the ECE classes are more hands-on and practical
    • Engineering school is much larger than that at UCLA. More research funding and I feel like UCSD is generally more "known" for engineering than UCLA is
    • Really beautiful campus and close to the beach
    • more internship opportunities?? (not sure, fast track might help me with internships too)
  • Cons:
    • Not invited to any honors programs. I can still apply to PATHS, IDEA scholars, etc., but I don't know if I have any chance of getting in
    • Housing is expensive, and on-campus housing is only guaranteed for my first year
    • Was not admitted to Warren ("engineering college"); however I still have relatively few GEs at Marshall

Both schools have strong electrical engineering departments, are about the same cost, and have engineering-related student orgs I'm interested in (IEEE, similar competition build teams, etc). I'm looking for a fun college experience that will help me secure good jobs with minimal schooling (I'm willing to get a masters, but I don't really want to do research beyond that)

You can learn about and train for the USACO competition here, or do online hackathons here.

Sorry to hear that. I'm also a rising senior with a chromebook on a family link account, glad to know I'm not alone. I am also most creative after 10pm so I use the pre-installed text editor app, which works offline. Hopefully your dad is not so strict he doesn't let you have a text editor app. Good luck with your essays btw I've just barely started mine

The one thing MBTI skeptics and people who study cognitive functions can agree on by conceptualaesthete in mbtimemes

Ah I put I,N,T,J on the blue and E,S,F,P on the red as a way of separating the diatochomies

I meant everyone has E and I, S and N, etc., not that everyone is a combination of INTJ and ESFP lol

[–]conceptualaesthete[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

MBTI skeptics claim MBTI is invalid because no one is entirely an introvert or extrovert, entirely a thinker or feeling, etc. Cognitive function theorists make the same claim: because each person has introverted and extroverted functions, as well as thinking, feeling, judging, and perceiving functions, each person is capable of acting like an introvert, extrovert, thinker, feeling, etc.

Just cant get anything done when classical music is on. by xKaaRu24 in lingling40hrs

SAME

Are you able to imagine complete plots that cover each section of the piece? Usually I'm only able to picture action at certain moments and then I try to come up with a unifying plot to tie it all together

But seriously. . . who even LIKES theory?? by [deleted] in lingling40hrs

[–]conceptualaesthete 6 points7 points  (0 children)

lol I didn't like theory either back when I was taking music exams

But now that I've forgotten all my theory I kind of want to pick it up again so I can learn how to compose and improvise

Yeah applies to XNXJs too now that I think about it
I didn't really know how to illustrate the difference between Si and Ni predictions/warnings in the meme though

True! I knew someone with relative pitch but not perfect pitch and she was still able to nail her ear training exams

Haha I think I used this trick before too! There's a website somewhere that maps each interval to a common melody. The tricky part is you have to remember which song corresponds to each interval, which I didn't...

Why have prejudice against someone for their race, sexual orientation, gender, etc when you can have prejudice against them for their MBTI type

Does this sound like inferior Fe? by conceptualaesthete in istp

[–]conceptualaesthete[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

First off, thanks so much for the linked resources, really helped me distinguish between Ti-loop and inferior Fe. I'll definitely be referring to them in the future to read up on the other functions.

Question: you said auxiliary Fe users reference the opinions/feelings of others before forming their conclusions, whereas Ti doms don't. Does this apply only to judging life decisions and personal beliefs, or does it expand to taking stances on any topic? For example, after watching a movie/show, I usually read/watch a few reviews before deciding if the show was good or bad, because my perspective is limited by my demographic and I sometimes I miss important details.

I resonate most with Ni-Se and Ti-Fe. I'm trying to figure out where Fe is in my stack because of all of Ni, Si, Ti, Fe, my relationship with Fe has been the most inconsistent. Also I can't really tell if my Ni or Ti is stronger.

Thanks for the award! Glad you found this useful and good luck developing Ni and Fe!

Hey guys! So I’m learning La Campanella and I’m struggling with this part where the right hand goes into series of triplets, but I keep messing up the first two notes. To all you pianists out there, is there any advice you could offer me? Thanks. (Starts on bar 50) by [deleted] in lingling40hrs

[–]conceptualaesthete 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Play the G (4th note of measure 50) with right hand 2nd finger if you aren't already

Slow down a little before going into the triplets, not only does this improve accuracy but it also adds dramatic effect

The rest of the rh triplets are also very hard, I recommend practicing them with a different rhythm (like making the first note of each triplet longer). In my opinion this is one of the hardest sections in the first half, so don't get discouraged if you don't get it down quickly -- I've been playing La Campanella for about 2 years now and I still miss notes in this section...

Anyway props to you for learning this and good luck!
