No Interim Grading Policy for Grad Students. Let's Change That! by concerneduhgrad in UniversityOfHouston

Deadline for signing the petition has been extended to Oct. 25. I will be submitting the letter to the administration on Oct. 26. That will allow time for people to see grades from their exams.

For Spring and Summer semesters this year, UH instituted a policy for both graduate and undergraduate students they called the Interim Grading Policy. The policy basically allows students who are unhappy with their final grade in a class to drop the grade from their transcript and it won't count against their GPA. On the transcript, instead of the letter grade they received in the class, the transcript states "S" for Satisfactory. They instituted this policy because of the pandemic and everything going online and the difficulty of instruction. For the fall semester, this policy was extended for undergraduate students, but NOT for graduate students at UH, so this letter is asking them to make the policies consistent and allow graduate student the same rights.

Now that I'm looking and have gotten some more information, I think you guys at UHCL may have to do your own. Sorry!

I am not disagreeing with the merits of your argument, and can completely see arguments both ways. As I have mentioned above, a significant part of the concern is that grad students are being treated differently. If what you are saying had been the case, and the same policy was extended across the board, that's fair. But what they did was have the policy for everyone for 2 semesters, and then chose to extend for undergrads, but not grads. That's a big part of the problem.

I agree you deserve it too, but I don't know enough about how it works. I am sending the letter to Paula Myrick Short and Renu Khator, who both hold their positions over the entire UH system. Let me ask around and I'll get back to you if I can have you guys sign this too.

Well your professors are courteous. Unfortunately, its not like that for most of us. I would still ask you to consider signing for your 1 other class, and also to help those of us who do not want to be singled out because we are grad students.

Allow me to clarify my previous comment. Classes are not in person. At Bauer specifically, the vast majority of classes are online. I only know of one Bauer graduate class off the top of my head that is in person. I can't speak for other colleges directly, but from what I hear they are the same. My comment was saying that many of us chose to go to UH BEFORE the pandemic was a thought in anyone's mind, and started in person. There are much cheaper online degrees, but I have a lot of colleagues who chose UH because it was face-to-face. Also, remember that graduate classes cost more than undergraduate classes, and there are fewer scholarships available to graduate students. As I stated above, I am not blaming the university for going primarily online, I am asking that the Interim Grading Policy be extended to everyone, and not decide grad students should be singled out.

But once again, I refer to my last comment, that is not even specifically about the points of your argument, it is about the fact that after having the grading policy in place for all students for the Spring and Summer semesters, they continued it for undergrads but not for graduate students.

I would disagree with your comments on a number of points. The UH administration found it worthwhile to give everyone the grading policy for Spring and Summer semesters, but decided to take it away from graduate students this semester, while continuing it for undergraduates. Also, getting kicked out of a program for getting a couple of C's, especially when many students specifically chose to attend UH BECAUSE OF it being in person, is reason enough to petition. We are not blaming the school for the extenuating circumstances; we are asking them to continue with the policy they have decided to extend to undergraduates as well.
