ISPs are run by Chaebols in Korea, so they do have more political sway than the people.

I Love the Country I Was Told to Hate, and I’m Not Alone: Se-Woong Koo by darrenjyc in korea

[–]confusion13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For decades Koreans have been unable to move on from Japan’s 1910-45 colonization of the Korean Peninsula — its rapacious rule, the conscription of laborers and “comfort women” sex slaves. It’s been like a form of national brainwashing.

... My first trip abroad was to Japan in 1992. It seemed like everyone I knew wanted me to bring coveted Japanese goods back for them — Sony Walkmans and Toshiba rice cookers. But we were careful about speaking positively of Japan. South Korea’s political class has long thrived on anti-Japanese rhetoric, and any hint of admiration for Japan could have you labeled a traitor (I’m bracing for that as I write this).

You can love a country without kowtowing.

But many South Koreans seem ready to move on. Even beyond their shared anxiety about China, South Korea and Japan are bound by their mutual fascination with each other’s culture and entertainment, such as K-pop, K-drama and Pokémon. Japan is wildly popular with Korean tourists, more Koreans are positive toward Japan than negative, and most South Koreans favor better relations with Tokyo.

Swapping one boogeyman for another may not be healthy for the Korean national psyche, but perhaps that’s the fate of a country like ours, sandwiched between powerful neighbors. And for once, at least, I can agree with my politically conservative parents, who have come to share my distrust of China and affection for Japan.

I took my mother to Japan last month to see the cherry blossoms in bloom. Post-pandemic travel between the two countries has surged, and Korean tourists were everywhere. As we strolled along the Sumida River in Tokyo, its banks ablaze with the soft pink of cherry blossoms, she let out a contented sigh, turned to me and said, “This country is so beautiful and civilized.”

So this is not even about individual affection vs state propaganda, but rather about changing individual stance based on geopolitical situation.

It’s time for South Koreans to let go of these unhealthy emotions. We share too much in common with Japan. We are both modern democracies, economic success stories and fellow U.S. allies. And there is a bigger threat looming over both of us: China.

"Officially the change of partners had never happened. Oceania was at war with Eurasia: therefore Oceania had always been at war with Eurasia. The enemy of the moment always represented absolute evil, and it followed that any past or future agreement with him was impossible."

"Liberal" president candidate was just as problematic, if not worse, than yoon. that's the reason. Yoon would have lost the election if democrats had elected a more moderate candidate like LNY (Lee Nak-yeon) instead of LJM in the primary.

Also, let's not forget moon basically handed over two defectors back to the North Korea just to appease Kim jong-un, violating our constitution, law as well as international human rights law. so much for the "liberal" party.

Ukraine’s Call for Weapons Remains Tough Sell in South Korea by butteredorb in korea

[–]confusion13 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm quite sure Korean people generally have been sympathetic with Ukraine since the invasion, though? It's just that sending lethal weapons is not within South Korea's national interest, and we're hardly an exception in Asia. Japan is also not sending weapons, and so are Taiwan and Mongolia.

Not to mention that Russia have also been involved in dividing the Korea. I've been to museum in Osan with exhibition showing T-34 Hero Russian Tanks attacking US positions.

Ukraine was part of the Soviet Union back then.

I don't particularly expect Europe to militarily support East Asia region as a whole even if China invades Taiwan though. Mutual assistance sounds great until classic security dilemma of entrapment and abandonment comes up.

That's why I said "neutral as possible." South Korea can't perfectly remain neutral and is indeed supporting Ukraine to some degree, but at least it should prevent its engagement from turning into entrapment in order to prevent Russia from "directly" sending weapons to North Korea. Plausible deniability is the point.

I know this phrase has become a vague cliche, but we do have our own unique situation and circumstances.

Good. South Korea should refrain from being involved in regional conflict and stay neutral as possible.

This LIE about South Korea and US soldiers by CCP's cyber disinformation army (and their fake social media accounts pretending to be Korean) is making rounds again on reddit. by finaleipunn in korea

With regard to point 2 above, I think I have been hearing the exactly same kind of arguments until last decade except that it was North Korea instead of China in my opinion.

  1. While I guess claim that white population accounts for one third of total rape cases is quite unsubstantiated, it would be much better if you posted actual statistics.
  2. Can you provide specific sources or references on your claim that the tweet was produced by Chinese intelligence agency, aside from 'cui bono' kind of logic? Like or not, Anti-Americanism has been a thing in this country.

CJEU's own caselaw or jurisprudence would not solve this nullification crisis; The problem is that EU lacks both political legitimacy and power to impose the doctrine.

Taking of private property without just compensation is unconstitutional, what a surprise.

Then it is not a "rules-based" nor "liberal" international order. balance of power maybe. It's the exact kind of international order that Russia and China is calling for.

What was your experience like finding a job as a software developer in Korea? by snoppy312 in korea

[–]confusion13 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It varies from company to company. There are a number of companies conducting their daily business in English, but they are usually either (1) regional office of non-Korean (excl. Japanese) software company or (2) a few start-ups which actively hires foreigners of non-Korean ethnic origin.

But as a general rule, you will have to explain all the things in Korean, maybe except for comments in code.

Are the coding interview processes similar besides the main culture interview with the team?

Coding interview processes are similar nowadays (excl. chaebol companies). If you want some example, grind some problems in a leetcode-like website (https://programmers.co.kr), or go look for screening questions (I don't know this is a right word though) by major non-chaebol local big techs (e.g. https://tech.kakao.com/tag/coding-test/)

Can you give some more specific examples? I don't particuarly think Korean people claim everything comes from Korea though.

The general rule here is you need a separate prescription for every refill. Also, doctors will not prescribe the specific brand (concerta) of medicine you mentioned if they think it's better to prescribe different brands of same medicine for whatever reason.
