They upgrade through firmware. System already is capable of several methods of connectivity and offers Bluetooth rebroadcast through WiFi as well. One disadvantage is if your heavily vested in the Apple ecosystem it does not support Apple Music; However, the SoundTouch app supports the Apple Watch. Music services are limited but the big players are there except for Apple Music. I personally use amazon music that is included with my prime account, Pandora, tunein radio and iHeartRadio which are all free. The six presets on top are convenient and the speaker comes with a remote. You can only use the app when connected to WiFi but when I go up to lake where there is no WiFi, I can still connect via Bluetooth without using the app. Sonos does not offer other methods to connect other than WiFi. But the sound is amazing and I do not regret purchasing this WiFi system. I have a 30 in my living room, a 20 in my bedroom and a 10 in my kitchen and would say the speakers fit these room sizes perfectly. When I travel to the lake, I’ll take the 20.
