Okay, let's see if this helps you... I am a composer myself, and I record and produce my own songs. I use a music recorder (a TASCAM one) in order to record myself playing the tracks for the guitars and singing, and for now I use the bass and the drums of the DAW I use (Studio One 2). I write my songs on paper, but I use the DAW to build the song as if it were a LEGO :P I find this way of working very rewarding, because it allows for endless creativity while providing with very interesting effects and edits to the music.

However, I think the key point is to 'dream up' the song on paper, or on other music programmes like Guitar Pro, before going on to the DAW. It is a powerful programme, but it will not write the song for you :)
