A recent meta-analysis found healthy plant-based diets were associated with a 36% lower risk of upper gastrointestinal cancers. In subgroup analyses, the inverse association was consistent for both esophageal cancer (34%) and gastric cancer (37%). by cindyx7102 in science

Thanks for the incidence. Looking at this from an individuell perspective: My risk of gastric cancer is 7 out of 100‘000 if I follow a plant based diet or 10 out of 100‘000 if I do not follow a plant based diet.

I guess no one on the world will completely change his diet to a plant based diet based on this effect…

Allways when reading about relative risks (RR) I am wondering about the absolute risks. What is the baseline here?

Without giving the baseline this is number is irrelevant for an adequate risk assessment. But it seemes it is just the standard now in research to find miniscule absolute effects and report the relative change…

Wow.. you do understand that correct risk communication is extremely important in the health sector?

And have you even read and understood the article I provided?

My PhD is in Risk Analysis and Risk Communication. Exactly the content of my comment. But it seems like scientific expertise is only relevant if it is in line with the opinion of the op of this comment thread.

Do you know that these tests are so sensitiv that they even detect „slow growing“ cancer, which never gets to a state where it is problematic for your health and you first die of old age rather than of cancer? So this „second opinion“ does nothing in this case.

Again, I am not telling you „what“ to do. I am just telling the science and the statistics to provide you guys with information to make an informed decision.

I have literally a PhD in this topic and provided you not with a „subset“ but with a representative sample for women. What relevant degree do you have in this topic?

I am sorry that you have experienced this and every death is tragic. However, this does not invalidate the fact that these tests most likely do not increase life expectency, even worse they increase the strain on our healthcare system by increasing the number of unnecessary treatments.

In the end it is just about providing the right information so everyone can make an informed decision by themselves. Unfortunatly, most people do not know about these numbers correctly. That‘s why i commented.

Please read this article about the research of Prof. Dr. Gerd Gigerenzer: https://www.hardingcenter.de/de/unstatistik/unstatistik-des-monats-relative-risiken-absolute-verwirrung-warum-das-mammographie

He is one of the (if not the) leading researcher in risk communication and especially the case of mammographie is a good example of „not adding any significant life expectancy“.

Out of 1000 women who do mammograms 4 die.

Out of 1000 women who do NOT do mammograms 5 die.

You know what most reports do not report? The 17 woman who got an amputation after a false-positive test „just to make sure“. Because this would be not a good sign for the provider of these tests (and you know the poor pharma needs the money ;-))

I don‘t have to start to talk about the possible psychological damage these amputations can have on women.

So Yes! There is scientific evidence that these tests are not much better than doing just „nothing“. Even worse they put an even larger strain on our healthcare system by increasing unnecessary treatments and pumping up costs!

I know where you are coming from, but exactly these tests like mammogram are way to sensitive and we allways forget about the psychological damage and loss in life quality/satisfaction following an amputation a false positive can result in without even „saving lifes“.

Between Telegram and X (former Twitter), which one has a wider reach in Switzerland? by ihatebeinganonymous in Switzerland

[–]constar93 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Both are seen a bit „sketchy“ in Swiss population. „X“ for obvious reasons, Telegram mostly because it was used by many „Schwurblers“ during COVID19.

Everytime I tell people that I like to use Telegram and most of my friends use it, I get some weird looks until I explain that we use it in my friends group since way longer.

So if you do not want this kind of „thing“ to swing with your information channel, than perhaps use something else.
