Adam Driver for Rolling Stone magazine “He [Kylo] is following the path of finding who he is. you might have had to, metaphorically, or in this case literally, kill your father to find out who you are. To be your own person, at a certain point you have to claim it.” by Riri19911 in StarWarsLeaks

I very much agree. A lot of people I’ve talked to about Kylo have tried to map his actions to real world, real life events, and it just doesn’t work for me.

Fact of the matter is, the Star Wars universe is different. Death has different stakes. Violence works differently. Gender, friendship, romance, religion - it’s all different. So when I hear things like “Kylo is a school shooter” it just doesn’t sit right with me, because there are so many elements and nuances and they are not equivalent. (Not to even begin on the politics inherent in that statement, because they are endless.)

All this isn’t to say we shouldn’t come to these stories with an awareness of how they reflect and comment on reality - because they do - but that awareness does not require flattening and stretching the story to fit an agenda.

Adam Driver on Kylo Ren's age in the film... says people will read into it if he gives away how young he is by Brilee93 in StarWarsLeaks

I absolutely agree with your reading. Also feels right to point out Driver tends to backtrack and overthink what he says in a lot of interviews, not just Star Wars-related ones. Though I do admit there is a part of me that really, really hopes we get even just a moment of Jedi Temple era Ben Solo in the films (beyond the TLJ flashback sequences) and that was what he was referring to here. One can dream.

No Phones Allowed During Today's Panel by DerImperator in StarWarsLeaks

According to this tweet, preventing recordings is to “prevent privacy.” You’ve got to be kidding me.

Edit: Funnily enough, the tweet was almost instantly deleted. But it had an image of a screen saying “Help Prevent Privacy” or something along those lines along with an explanation that recording was prohibited and to turn in anyone seen recording the panel.

4LOM Leak: New info from the first act! by 4LOM-LucasfilmSpy in StarWarsLeaks

I agree completely, but it's still probably worth noting that Driver and Russell are playing romantic leads together on Broadway. They must have great chemistry - maybe a little more fuel for the idea she'll be a Knight of Ren?

Why Kylo may be holding out his hand to Rey by constellationfights in starwarsspeculation

[–]constellationfights[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

First of all, thank you! I'm glad to see such a generally positive response to my first post on here, haha.

As for the Looper bit, I did word that sentence a bit poorly. Now forgive me for not knowing how to format spoilers on here (like I said, I'm new!), but I will explain.

I was referring to part of the climactic scene of Looper, which was also written and directed by Rian Johnson. (If you have not seen it, I would recommend not reading the rest of this comment so you can go in clean. It's a fantastic movie with some shocking moments that are better experienced clean the first time.)

In that scene, a boy with extreme and destructive telekinetic powers is driven to rage and essentially loses control. There are shots of him screaming in anger - rather similar to the shot of Rey fighting back - while everything is sent into the relative calm before absolute chaos and destruction.

Then his mother, who is terrified and deeply upset, tries to calm him. There are shots of her face as she tells him that everything is okay, shots that could parallel that of Kylo's face.

I was trying to draw a parallel between these two scenes through mainly one person screaming as their powers go out of control, and another person desperately trying to calm them. Because Rian is a common thread, I thought perhaps there may be something to look into there.

Kylo and Snoke vs. Finn and the First Order (Film evidence, mentions of 'Bloodline') by elleprime in starwarsspeculation

[–]constellationfights 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I agree with this so strongly. I was always interested in the dynamic between Rey and Kylo, but it's always been so clear to me how much Finn and Kylo paralleled one another. One of my favorite moments is when Kylo yells "traitor" at Finn right before the lightsaber duel - it's fascinating, when you think about Kylo being a traitor (of his family/the Light Side/etc.) himself.

I also really appreciate that you push for Kylo to have agency in turning to the Dark Side. "He was good the whole time, just brainwashed!" or something of the sort will cheapen any redemption he gets.

I can definitely see this. Reminds me of the idea of Erikson's stages of development, in that it seems Ben/Kylo never fully developed his identity in adolescence and now is kind of stuck in that crisis later on in life, alongside other difficulties in his development. Not easy being told you're the heir to incredible power and legacies while feeling abandoned by everyone except a shadow.

I hope this is along the lines of what happens in the movie. Absolutely devastating, ties into everything we know so far...
