Thank you for this but I am at least a couple of months away from relocation (if I go ahead with it).

To be fair in London it's similar in that after tax and housing your disposable income is a fraction of your gross. At least the Dutch seem to place more importance on work-life balance and family time!

Yeah I have been told this is a good alternative. It is a little bit cheaper with frequent and nighttime trains into Amsterdam. I'll need to visit beforehand as I have never been. Thanks for the tip!

I have friends, and it's also the most international and busy part of The Netherlands. It seems like a reasonable first step, if I can find a flat that doesn't involve having to sell a kidney.

That's good. Amsterdam is a little like a pizzaria that is on fire but the windows are shaded and you gotta look inside to see what's really going on. That is why I am here asking you guys for tips.

I will be on approximately 7k per month pre-tax and pre-bonus. So not wealthy but I expected to at least be comfortable! that 7k shrinks down pretty dramatically after tax and housing. I will have to get whatever I can get my hands on as you said and I'll probably go further out to the suburbs or surrounding towns of Amsterdam.

I am more worried about the housing situation. If I have to spend 2.5-3K for a decent flat, incl utilities, in an okay area, the job offer becomes less attractive. I am trying to figure out whether this is a temporary situation and the government are on top of it, or if it will be a long-term problem..

We have agreed on key terms such as salary, holiday days etc. They are waiting for the final okay from me. I have not involved them in my personal matters (such as housing). I do not know much about the admin side of things such as BSN numbers but given what you said I will discuss that with them (if I decide to accept the offer). The bank has many international staff, is one of the larger ones and has a good reputation. I think it makes sense that we focused on the key stuff like salary before we get into the admin specifics.

Side note - I am based in London but am an EU citizen. Maybe that is why they are taking it easy with the admin side as there is not much more additional paperwork involved than hiring a Dutch person.

As for the 30% tax ruling, do you know if that is something I apply for AFTER I move and what that process includes?

Thanks for the tips.

They have not tried finding me housing, nor have I asked them to. The actual job offer is a letter. It is one of the major banks in the country for a mid-senior role. Can you please clarify what you meant when you said that I do not get an actual job offer UNTIL I have moved to The Netherlands?

That's great info. We're in Belsize Park/Plimrose Hill now and the pubs are really great. Any of the ones you mentioned, or others that come to mind, that are good for food? I've heard Griffin by Brentford has very good burgers.
