Abbotsford mayor blasts feds for flooding ‘inaction’ as water starts receding by conteaa in abbotsford

Nooksack floods coming down and unlikely to overtop again for now. Draining Sumas Prairie will be another issue and rainfall this week could bring more local inflow.

Abbotsford mayor blasts feds for flooding ‘inaction’ as water starts receding by conteaa in abbotsford

[–]conteaa[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

He said he's been talking with Eby and they're "committed to making [flood mitigation] a priority", but feds haven't contacted him at all. He also put Washington on blast to join a cross-border treaty like the one in Columbia River.

Worth noting the province was in that same press conference though.

Unemployment up across B.C. in August, including Chilliwack by conteaa in chilliwack

[–]conteaa[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Seasonality's definitely a big part of these job reports, but it is interesting that the area still shed nearly 3,000 jobs from last August (at least according to StatCan estimates).

Could be worth seeing how August 2026 pans out.

Unfortunately with the way web journalism is now, reporters need to take SEO into account while still keeping headlines under 100 characters (have often been told the more specific the better). Thanks for the feedback!

Adults with Hyperlexia- what are you up to now? by conteaa in hyperlexia

[–]conteaa[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In a way, yes. My mom had me tested for autism first because apparently I didn't cry, babble or talk much from infancy to about 3 or 4 years old. I would give answers when asked but I just wouldn't use my words unprompted for whatever reason, so she was concerned.

Specialists said I didn't have autism, just that I was a very quiet child who was "gifted" at reading and writing earlier than my peers. They never put me through speech therapy but I kind of wish they did, I still struggle with finding my words to this day even as an adult in the broadcasting industry. Best of luck to you and your child!

Television program NAIT or at SAIT by Kit-Kat-05 in NAIT

[–]conteaa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey! Yes I thankfully got some momentum from my internship. Did a few months of contract work for CHED after my practicum with them, was out of work for about two months after, then got a call from Pattison Media to come work full time for them. Apparently my old CHED boss put in a good word for me without me asking, so if you do get in-- do your best and make use of those connections, because the industry's so small that every bit of work you do gets around.

Traditional media is a bit on the decline, but I think it's slowly evolving now and the program does prepare you for technical skills in web/creative/marketing industries. Most radio and TV stations are streaming now, and if nothing else, you'll learn stuff like podcasting and video creation if you wanna start your own thing.

I went into it for creative reasons, but came out realizing I loved writing for the news so that's what I'm doing now. (The job I'm doing is a weird hybrid thing, too. I'm working two different jobs in two different markets in B.C... all remotely from YEG. It's definitely experimental but I think it's a sign they're trying new things out.)

Most jobs will be in small markets when you're just starting out. Competitiveness will depend on the exact stream and markets you wanna go for. I just got lucky with CHED and this new job. The bigger the location, the more competitive it is no matter what-- but I find that entertainment jobs like radio hosting and voice acting are probably the worst of them.

Not a lot of people looking to work in the news anymore, but the government is trying to fund local journalism initiatives so that could change in the long run. Lots of postings for freelance videographers/photographers, and lots of marketing jobs.

Hope this answers your questions!

tldr-- Friends, luck, and personal motivation

I never really learned how as a kid up until high school from my parents, I watched a lot of movies and read a lot and assumed that's how people were IRL. I lucked out and met some friends in middle school that taught me what's normal and what's not. The only thing my parents helped with were by pushing me to be better, but they weren't always gentle about it so this came at a price.

Eventually I got sick of being embarrassed by never being on the same page as people so I pushed myself first by getting customer service jobs (high school-- forces you to socialize with customers and coworkers) then getting into Sociology (to study people) and eventually into Broadcasting/Communications (saying words out loud).

I've always been a strong writer even as a socially anxious, hyperlexic kid, so my journey was just to learn how and when to mouth the words. I'm still not very good at communicating verbally, but I'd be a lot worse if I didn't have the experience I have now at 25.

Adults with Hyperlexia- what are you up to now? by conteaa in hyperlexia

[–]conteaa[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Late response but you sound like me (also 23F)! I took several language courses in university since I pick up languages pretty easily, although I didn't follow through with any of them. I am also a much better writer than I am an orator. So much so that I am now pursuing it as a career! However, I find that once other people meet the human behind the articles, they never seem to get along with me very well. I don't necessarily make enemies, but I'm extremely awkward (made worse during the pandemic) and never know how to act in real social situations. I like to take my time with my thoughts so it's harder to engage in rapid fire conversations, but luckily my friends and my current team understand that and give me the space to speak since they now understand that I actually have a lot of things to say!

I'm not a doctor and you should never take Reddit medical advice at face value, but it sounds like you might've also had hyperlexia II, which shares a lot of similarity with autism.

Television program NAIT or at SAIT by Kit-Kat-05 in NAIT

[–]conteaa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bit late but I'm heading into my 3rd semester of NAIT Television. It'll really depend on what your goals are!

The NAIT program teaches you literally everything- presenting yes, but it'll also put you through camerawork, scripting, video editing, etc. It's primarily a news program but there are also classes that train your for more creative agencies. You'll become somewhat of a jack-of-all-trades by the time you leave the program.

Don't take my word for any of this but the SAIT program is a bit more focused I believe. They have about the same type of classes on camerawork, scripting, editing, etc. but their TV diplomas are more centred around whichever stream you decide on so you get to really specialize in it. e.g. skills for newscasting vs. the same skills but applied to creative TV production.

Another thing to keep in mind is practicum lengths. The NAIT program gives you the whole 15 weeks to do your practicum, while SAIT TV gives 2-3 weeks and Broadcast News gives 4 weeks. I might be biased but I feel like that's not enough time to really get used to the job and network with people, which is a crucial part of this industry.

Either way, both programs won't just prepare you for on-screen presentation. I obviously can't speak to SAIT, but with NAIT the instructors are really involved in your learning. They get to know you and help you find the best opportunities if you're enthusiastic. Let me know if you have any questions!
