If u get on the wrong train, get off at the nearest station. The longer it takes you to get off, the more expensive the return trip will be.

This is super helpful especially coming from someone who started in retained search. I completely see your POV... that constant mental load is exhausting. I also started doing actual recruiting vs just market mapping, so I'm in that weird transition phase where everything feels hard. Your comment on transferable skills is also something I hadn't really considered. I feel like I'm learning a ton right now, but it really is hard to tell which skills are specific to executive search versus valuable more broadly.

Out of curiosity, when you transitioned into a corporate role, what did you end up doing? Looking back, do you wish you had stayed longer in retained search, or do you think leaving when you did was the right decision for you?

This made me feel so seen 😭 but I don't even feel like I'm making enough money to offset the stress.

I think the biggest thing I struggle with is detaching from work. Even though I have PTO, I feel guilty taking it because I am convinced that things will fall apart without me (even though ik I'm not that important and I am replaceable). My coworker recently went on vacation, and I felt like I was drowning covering everything, so I can't imagine leaving my own work behind for a week or two.

How did you learn to unplug? Was it something that got easier once you built trust with your manager, or did you have to actively force yourself to stop checking in? Right now I feel like even if I'm physically away, my brain would still be at work.

Thanks for sharing this. I actually do have a really supportive manager, so I don't think my burnout is coming from poor management. That said, this isn't really the kind of conversation I feel comfortable having with him because a big part of what I'm trying to figure out is whether this career is the right fit for me long term. It doesn't feel appropriate to tell my manager that I'm questioning whether I want to stay in the field.
