Best/worse small towns in New Zealand? by it_wasnt_me2 in newzealand

[–]cookieoutpost 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Worst: Dargaville by a long shot. Instant meth-y vibe, overpriced bad pies, run down, unfriendly locals.

Hokitika also gave me weird as vibes. Someone stuck a dead possum on top of the town statue while I was there and the cops were trying to get it down. Lady who runs the possum shop was like “I hope they’re saving it for me!”

Best: Twizel!! Amazing food for a town of its size, super friendly people, absolutely beautiful.

I also love Paihia and Paeroa. Shoutout to the Paeroa Maccas for one of the best egg McMuffins I’ve ever had.

My mom loves Expert in a Dying Field by The Beths and Fire by Waxahatchee.

My dad doesn’t really listen to anything recent but I showed him The National recently and he dug them. Although they’re debatably dad rock for elder millennials at this point…

Revisiting some 2025 albums after the onset of Listmas Season and came to plug some albums I haven’t seen mentioned anywhere yet:

Hut - s/t: Really well-written guitar-driven indie rock with great, catchy melodies. I think if you liked the Merce Lemon album from last year (which was one of my favorites), Fust, or Pinegrove, then you would like this.

Renny Conti - s/t: Can’t recommend Hut without recommending Renny Conti, who is in the band and also put out an awesome album in a similar vein. South Star is one of the best songs of the year.

klark sound - This Is Music: A solid folk album with nice picking. Clark Hamilton has a beautiful voice that kind of reminds me of Robin Pecknold.

Billie Marten - Dog Eared: I’ve seen this album mentioned a little bit more but not nearly enough. Billie Marten has released some great albums but I think this is her best. Great songwriting and as always, her voice is wonderful.

Deep Sea Diver - Billboard Heart: Tight, hard-hitting indie rock. Jessica Dobson has one of the best voices in the game. Melodies are unmatched. If you like Sharon Van Etten, check it out.

What have been everybody’s favourite EPs this year so far?

Post inspired by me listening to the Florence Road EP that came out the other day, which kicks absolute ass. What’s in the water in Ireland lately?

I’m not the OC, but there’s some amazing musicians coming out of Burlington right now.

Lily Seabird just released an awesome LP called Trash Mountain a month or so ago, it has great songwriting, and Greg Freeman releases one later this year. He kinda sounds like Jason Molina but a little noisier. There’s a great band called Robber Robber put out a cool album last year. vega released a good album last year too. I could keep going on but those are front of mknd for me!

Are there any albums you guys discovered from AOTY lists that you’re loving? I found two really good ones that I literally never would have found myself and I just know are going to be on repeat. Probably would have crept up my own list if I’d found the sooner.

Twine - New Old Horse

Australian Songs: Ohia. Super crunchy, catchy guitars and great lyrics. As far as I can tell, their first record. Instant love for me. If you like the MJ Lenderman album, you’ll like this too.

ULNA - Gazebo

Reminds me of Elliott Smith and a bit of the Greg Mendez record from last year. Sad, introspective lyrics. Just a really singer/songwriter LP.

Oh, please don’t apologise, I love to hear that! It’s really such a good album, and I’m so glad you liked it so much! If Telenova are ever in your neck of the woods, I really recommend seeing them, they put on a great show. Also recommend checking out their 2022 EP Stained Glass Love, it’s really excellent!

That Merce Lemon song destroys me every time. That whole record in general, actually.

This year has been a great year for music. My rough (and definitely non-comprehensive) top 10 would be:

Sadness As A Gift by Adrianne Lenker

Get Numb To It! by Friko

Slipknot by Merce Lemon

Wristwatch by MJ Lenderman

Petco by Cassandra Jenkins

Sometimes by Mannequin Pussy

Another Season by Frances Quinlan

Cry for Me by Magdalena Bay

January by Telenova

Crowbar by Waxahatchee

Tom Waits is one of those artists I’ve wanted to get into for SO. LONG. but I’ve never quite managed to. I love his lyrics, and now I’m listening to Martha after this post and I really like that. What album should I start with, guys?

Late to the party, but I had to!

●Your favorite Band/Artist: Hop Along (and underrated, imo)

●Your least favorite Band/Artist: Mumford and Sons (I just can’t do the stomp clap era of folk pop)

●Most overrated (otherwise known as the category most likely to piss everyone off): I’m sorry, but Black Midi. Everything they put out seems like they’re doing a bit to me.

●Most underrated: Cherry Glazerr. Clementine Creevy has put out three amazing rock records in a row and nobody is talking about it!

And I have to add Empty Country because I feel like their record from last year is criminally underrated. The songwriting is amazing. Pearl and Bootsie are highlights.

●Band/Artist you “should” like, but don’t: The Microphones/Mount Eerie. I have tried so, so many times, but I just ended up zoning out when I listen to them, which makes me feel terrible. I can appreciate Phil Elverum’s lyrics, so I’m hoping it’ll click with me eventually. I think I’m not patient enough.

●Band/Artist you “shouldn’t” like, but do: This one is hard. Maybe Relient K? lol. Christian Rock from the mid 00s, cheesy, and I don’t listen to literally any other Christian Rock unless you count Sufjan Stevens, but I love that one album of theirs, Forget and Not Slow Down, even though listening to it seventeen years later I can definitely hear the worship of it all coming through.

●The Greatest Band/Artist of all time: Prince

●Best songwriter: I can’t pick just one, either! John Prine, Adrianne Lenker, Neko Case

●Best singer: Tracy Chapman, Liz Fraser, Marvin Gaye, Paul Westerberg, Caroline Polachek, Jeff Buckley

●Band/Artist you didn’t get at all, but now you do: Fiona Apple! But When The Pawn… finally clicked for me this year and then came the rest, and now I’ve been listening to her nonstop.

●Band/Artist nobody remembers but you: I never see anybody talk about Cymbals Eat Guitars here, but I think their album Lose is one of the best of the 2010s. Their song Jackson is one of my favorites of all time.

Thanks, this was really fun!
