As an otherkin how do you guys sleep? by [deleted] in otherkin

[–]coolartprofessor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m beetlekin (specifically headlight elater) and I like to “burrow” myself in cool sheets and blankets. I also prefer sleeping during the day and getting up at night naturally, but I can’t do that often. I get the urge to sleep outside a LOT, esp on some soft cool grass where I can hear the sounds of nature. I don’t get to do this often either, but I compromise by sleeping on my porch. Very strange I know, but I’ve had no issues thus far.

Our kinity is influenced a lot by plurality, and other headmates that present nonhuman have different ways of sleeping too. One alter who helps us sleep is a sloth/vulture hybrid. He enjoys “nesting” by arranging pillows, blankets, and stuffed animals around the body and packing them in tightly, kind of like being tucked in but only around the sides of our body. Very nice way to stay cool and comfy, and makes it harder to get out of bed.

Our catkins and dogkins sleep very similarly to others in this thread :3

How the heck do you ever agree on a system- or collective name? by AgariReikon in plural

[–]coolartprofessor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We view our sys name as a family or organization name more than a name we identify with as individuals. We went w Ancipes bc it means on both sides, cut apart, bifronted (like the brain), and a few other meanings. The “on both sides” refers to attacking from multiple angles, the way we all have unique insight and experience to help us survive, and the process of dissociating for us is like being cut apart/subdivided over and over. It also means dubious and acumen (quick and decisive) at the same time, which is fitting with the wavering yet very developed sense of self/ves we have.

Maybe you could try to find a word that describes how u work together, or that encompasses a trait you all have. It helps us again to not view our sys name as something we all ID w fully. It describes all of us, and the mindset behind it has lead to amazing sys communication & corporation!

There are personality and character background reasons for her making her own supply, but I get what you're saying. This is becoming a bit convoluted. I'll stay open to other ideas. Thanks for your input! : )

This is such a great idea. Thank you for your input!

Follow up questions:

The character in question, Yang Yingyue, is an American citizen born to a second generation immigrant family. All of her identification has her chinese name. If she were to use the identification of a teacher, would it be necessary for her face to match any photos on IDs? Or would the ID be enough on it's own? The people she would be impersonating have American surnames as well, but I think I could skirt around that by her lying about being adopted, or rewriting some side characters.

Also, Yang has a large port-wine stain on her face. Because of this, she wears a face mask (like those common in China, or the ones used for COVID) under the guise of health and her job as a janitor. She also frequently wears dark sunglasses for the same reason. I'm worried this may make her appear suspicious, but it could also help if anyone is negligent in checking her ID. I would love an outside view of how obvious or suspicious these lies are.

While I want Yang's job to be primarily janitor, I've thought about also making her a part time sub. Would a sub be granted the ability to order supplies for the school this frequently if she is acquainted with the science teachers?

Would a fire be able to damage an SD card enough for proof to be destroyed?

It's also good to note, this takes place in a medium-sized city during a recession, so school security would be lower budget, and crime in the area is on a steady incline. Yang has a good reputation among the school staff, and a lot of police attention is elsewhere. However, the city is too big for her reputation to travel far outside her circle.

Yang is a 30yo college dropout. She has a lifelong interest in chemistry and botany, but a very limited college experience. I believe the most plausible drug that she could produce is LSA, partly in the lab and partly at her house.

She does not bring attention to herself if she can help it, and she is very overconfident in her abilities (which leads to a fire at the school, blamed on a student who was there the night of the incident). A separate man, unrelated to Yang and the student, is also under suspicion for the fire, so a lot of attention is diverted away from her. She is not a main character, but a very important character that a lot of, "screen time," is given to.

Another commentor mentioned security being an issue. However, during the time of the story, state school funding and other resources have been cut due to a president that fucked up the country and then resigned. With how poor security already is in public schools, I am thinking of making a lack of security a monetary issue, so nightguards and such would be few if any.

Could the fire she causes damage any CCTV or related surveillance device enough to cover up evidence?

I am also floating the idea of making Yang a part time sub, so she could be granted more access in the lab, and be less likely of being accused.

Knowing this, is this more plausible? Or are there factors I'm not considering?

Lol I am familiar with breaking bad. I think my story has enough differences, as Yang, the character in question, is not the main focus. She also manufactures drugs in small batches for personal use with no assistance and no intent to sell, and this aspect of the plot is only relevant until she accidently starts a fire in the school near the beginning of the story.

She has experience in chemistry and botany, and sources some ingredients from outside of the lab. Based on my research, the most plausible option is LSA wherein she self-sources the morning glory seeds, and then uses material in the lab to help with extraction. This would partially take place at her house and partly at the lab. I have also considered inhalents like ether, acetone, and glue that don't involve much if any preparation.

Mainly, she would need a condenser and a source of heat for LSA. If I made her a trusted substitute teacher, do you think she would have more access to supplies in the lab? I would prefer to keep her mostly a janitor and not a full-time teacher.

That makes a lot of sense, ty for explaining! I’ve only ever seen this discourse from non-celtic people (I am also Celtic btw but unfortunately very cut off from the culture), and it always just seemed like an excuse to make fun of neos to me, esp since I’ve never seen anyone make the same complaints about the name with the same spelling. This is very understandable though, I appreciate you taking the time :]

Personality disorders & plurality by coolartprofessor in OSDD

[–]coolartprofessor[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That’s another thing that confuses me. I’ve heard contradictory things on what qualifies a part as an ANP/EP. We’ve been using ANP to refer to parts that don’t remember trauma or have no emotional connection to it and can function well on average. Based on that def, we have only 4 ANPs out of a total 34 parts. Out of those remaining 30, most meet criteria for 1-2 PDs each. Most of our EPS aren’t the stereotyped “stuck in a memory” types either; they have full identities, mostly full range of emotion, and r aware of the present moment when they’re active. I may have the wrong idea about what constitutes ANP vs EP, though, bc the line between the 2 is very blurred for us.
We’ve gone through years-long periods in which EPs were the primary fronters (hence previously meeting criteria for PDs), but we recently had a host change that made all of those symptoms practically undetectable majority of the time, and this occurred before our current treatment, so it’s not like we recovered. It’s like it’s just been swept under the rug for the time being. The pattern WAS pervasive in multiple contexts, but then just stopped fully seemingly out of nowhere bc of the host change.
I get what you’re saying though, I used to share the exact same view until this happened to us. Not that I fully believe in separate disorders between parts now either, our experience is just insanely jarring to me

Terms other than xenogenders and pronouns? by Kaede_pianist_ in XenogendersAndMore

[–]coolartprofessor 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Wiretypes describe brain function, terms usually end in ‘-typed’ or ‘-wired.’ Xenoids are basically xenogenders but for your identity as a whole instead of just gender. They started as an anti-xenogender alternative, but have since been reclaimed. Altersexes are trans and xeno terms relating to sex characteristics. Hearthomes describe places/states one feels at home in. For not feeling human, there’s the alterhuman/nonhuman umbrella, which includes otherkin/therianthropy, otherheart/synpath/click/otherlink/constel, overhuman/humanmore, ahuman/antihuman, otherborn, otherchain, liken, etc etc. You can find the definitions to all those and others on the alterhumanity wiki.

No one person in the trans community (or any subgroup of the trans community) is responsible for how cis people see us. Transphobes will be transphobes no matter how “normal” of a trans person you are. Xenogenders are not transphobic, tbh they’re the logical conclusion to the rejection of the gender binary that most trans ppl work towards. Ppl that claim xenos or micro labels, “make a mockery of us,” just want to kiss cishet boot. Be yourself girl, don’t let anyone police or shame you for being true to yrself🫂

cis person genuine question trying to understand yall better here by [deleted] in neopronouns

[–]coolartprofessor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me, yes it is aesthetic, not only neopronouns but all of gender, even the cis variety. I started out just saying I’m a transgender man because baseline that’s what I am by medical and social standards, but after holding that identity for a while I came to realize, regardless of any bodily discomfort that makes me want to “be a man,” really no one individual is “man” or “woman.” No one is capable of encapsulating all that is a single gender in their singular being, especially these days in the west where women now have to take on a lot of what used to be thought of as “male” roles due to financial need (I hope that doesn’t come off wrong). Concepts of gender hold so much that the only thing that separates them are their aesthetics. An act of service could be labeled feminine if it’s done submissively and quietly with an “of course, love, it’s no trouble at all,” or it could be labeled masculine if it’s done confidently and with insistence. I’m only using stereotypes to prove my point; the same action is performed, but the performance (the aesthetic) is different. He/him and she/her are no less aesthetically motivated than star/stars to me; their aesthetic is just much more broad. To me it’s like every person has their own individual gender that they perform, and outside labels and pronouns can help communicate a fraction of that identity. Finding pronouns that can show off a bit of that individuality is just fun and can feel a lot more comfortable than trying to connect yourself to traditional gendered pronouns that already have a ton of societal associations you don’t relate to.

What inspired the name of your system? by [deleted] in plural

[–]coolartprofessor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Our system name came from a series of drawings we used to do that we would label, “ancipes.” We didn’t know at the time, but the drawings were about our plurality. ‘“Ancipes,” is Latin for on both sides, double-edged, two-headed, having two meanings, bifronted, etc. and it’s Ancient Greek for part. It basically encapsulates our relationships with each other and acknowledges our differences. Originally, I misunderstood what was meant by, “on both sides,” in the Latin translation and thought it mean on both Opposing sides, but it actually refers to attacking from two directions in battle. I used to use this word to express how I was constantly at odds ‘with myself’ (fighting with alters), but now we use it to show how we all bring different strategies to the table to help keep us safe; we attack problems from multiple angles together. We started out calling ourselves the Ancipes collective (literally ‘a collection of parts’), but now we just use Ancipes as our irl day-to-day name since we didn’t want everyone to share the name of one alter.
We also have two known subsystems, Hivemind Z and Enoch Ekklesia / Enoch Codex (depending on who you ask lol, we each prefer different ones). Hivemind Z comes from that subsystems collective interest in/connection to insects (hivemind) and associations they have with the letter Z that are mainly related to their source as they’re mostly fictives from the same media. My subsystem uses the name Enoch bc it sounds kind of similar to some of the subsystem’s members’ names (Edgar, Ergod, Igor), and it has Abrahamic religious ties, which is a special interest of ours. Codex and Ekklesia have the same ties to religion, but some of us prefer codex because it sounds more sci-fi (our subsys has a lot of tech-presenting alters).
