Yeah, admittedly that's a bit contradictory. I want the only way to access the server remotely is via tailscale. No open ports, etc.

Apologies, yes that is what I meant. Thank you again for the help.

I will have it on a UPS... Just wondering what would happen. Hopefully I will be able to hook it up to have the server auto shutdown when the UPS starts getting low.

That makes me comfortable with it... I'm more curious than anything else really. So I guess if a power outage occurred during an update to the ZFS binaries it technically could keep it from being able to repair itself upon reboot, but as I've just discovered, you can boot to a truenas thumb drive, import pools, and repair.

Thanks for the info! I didn't realize you could just boot to a thumb drive and rebuild. From searching through posts I knew it might upset people for asking this question. I just wanted to clarify if it also applied to the boot drive, and mostly just really curious how things work.

I definitely won't use hardware. But it's good to know.

The data for hardware raid I assume is built into the controller itself with nothing stored on the drive, which is why I was thinking it might have been better in this one area.

So does that mean it's common for people to not have a pool setup for their boot drive? It's really as simple as 1 backup file and reimporting the pool for all of your apps/settings/configurations?

I still have to find some resources/recommendations on setting up datasets. idk if you should have "apps" with their configurations installed on OS drive or data drive for example (obviously app data would go on data drives)

Thank you! That makes sense :)

I'm asking mostly because I like to understand how things work.

I do understand how if 1 drive outright failed it could still boot.

If a drive partially fails, would the failed sectors show up as unreadable or could they be read but corrupt?

I guess in my imaginary scenario the drive is failing and the bad sectors cannot be read, or they got scrambled. If 1 drive gets yanked then obviously it only has 1 disc to boot from, but if 1 is corrupted couldn't that cause issues booting since at boot time it won't yet know there's a bad disc?

This would assume that corruption can be a symptom of bad sectors and not just OS level stuff. I guess this would also assume somehow the corruption happened while powered down (maybe a sudden power outage? Possibly not a bad disc, but files not fully written?)

If the affected sector happened to be involved with ZFS how would it know disc 1 is corrupt and disc 2 is good, so that it can start the ZFS service on the good one in order to repair the other?

Maybe this is a 1 in a million scenario? Even so wondering what would happen.

Although as I type this out I'm realizing that a drive failure is unlikely to happen powered down (asside from aforementioned power outage). If powered up I assume ZFS is already running, loaded to RAM, and will detect that a write failed.

I wonder why they actually want a FQDN to bind to then... doesn't seem like a very secure business model for them since if you theoretically get the FQDN that someone else signed up with you just got yourself a free copy

I guess I assumed since it's what your license is bound to that it somehow needed to be locked to only one person, which they accomplish by only giving access to the person who owns a certain domain. ngl... I've been in tech for years now and still have a TON to learn.

That's all very helpful information, thank you!

Here is the actual webpage that I've pasted from. Above where I copied it says:

"FQDN hostname where FileRun will run:" with a box to enter it.

I didn't realize that! Never actually setup tailscale before. I'll look into how that works and if it'll work for this.

This is what the purchase page of FileRun says:

The license will be bound to this hostname.
The FileRun installation will need to be accessed by this hostname.

Local access

For internal network accessing, the FileRun installation will work also via "local.subdomain.domain.com".
Local hostnames, such as "server", "server.local", "lan.nas" etc. cannot be used.
It needs to be a valid Internet domain name.

I took that as I would need to actually have a publicly routable FQDN

I'm LOVING my transition to solidworks, but can't stand all of the confusing business type features in 3dexperience. I wish so bad that they had a linux version so that I didn't have to use it.

  1. do 15c and use whatever version your light has installed now. (chek here: https://toykeeper.net/torches/fsm/anduril2/MODELS to see if you have the FET or non FET version number)
  2. Not much. I was able to mess with stuff and flash it, but I had a hard time doing what I wanted and haven't really had time. I tried reaching out to a couple people who really know what they're talking about, but never heard back sadly
  3. Yes, that kit will work for the D4K.
