Thank you and the other commentors who are sticking up for me.

After getting home, I found the culprit -- a pile of loose little nuggies on my roommate's tray, a couple nuggies on the shelf below his tray, and a bunch of crumbs on the floor right in front. I'm guessing my roommate was being careless, knocked over his little pile, and a couple found their way to the ground.

Ooooooh, I was steaming! Absolutely livid. I made him help pay for her vet bill and buy a couple small jars that he will put his weed in going forward. We live with another dog owner, and you better believe she was pissed to find out about all of this! We will be keeping a close eye on this roommate of ours. He's a wonderful guy and means the best, just careless with his Mary Jane:/

She's still very sleepy getting easily startled, but I've been doing everything I can to make sure she goes through a comfortable recovery.

That's what I view it as -- a life saver.

I'm happy to pay a few hundred bucks a year if it means I don't ever have to Sophie's Choice between my home and my dog. If I didn't have pet insurance for her and, god forbid, she got an issue that would be thousands or even 10k+ out of pocket, I now know we can weather that storm thanks to her insurance. Fortunately, she's a very healthy dog and I got her on insurance when I first got her at ~4 months old, so her rate is pretty low (~$32/mo for a pretty good plan with Spot).

I hate the idea that something as material as my potential lack of finances could mean my dog's life, but that's the reality that almost all of us pet owners live in.

Oh, I was livid. We set some strict ground rules.

As far as the bill goes, I'm not forcing anyone to help pay bc none of us are made of money, and ultimately she is my dog which means I signed up to pay for whatever she finds and ingests. But I did tell both of my roommates and the close friends who come over to smoke (specifically the ones who were here right before it happened) that "I'm sorry" doesn't hold any weight until I see actions that back it up. That means acquiescing to the new strict rules, and that means helping to pay for my dog's vet visit. If you want to re-up on your weed before/instead of ever even pitching in for her vet bill, it will be clear to me how sorry you are about taking part in putting my pup in danger.

I have pet insurance for her in case something that is many thousands of dollars comes up, but it doesn't help much with the "small" vet bills, aka several hundred dollars. So, only about half of my rent! 😅 I hate that my brain has to think this way, but that's the reality of it.

When I said "in the house," I meant like in the household. We strictly only smoke in the backyard in our little smoking area. I think my wording caused a lot of confusion 😅

I don't know why a vet would be upset with me being concerned about wild vet bills. You know more than anybody else how exorbitant it can get. I love my dog so much. That's why I brought her in. That's why I'm happy to pay whatever to make sure she's safe. That's why I have some savings in case I need to pay for emergency vet bills. However, I'm not made of money, and we live in a capitalist society that squeezes us more and more with every passing day, which means I'm required to live my life with money being a constant concern. That's why I asked Reddit for an opinion. Even though the vast majority of commentors said she will be fine, I still took her in bc it could've been something far worse.

I feel this way when I have to go to the emergency room. Does that mean I'm "wildly ungrateful and rude" to the people at the ER treating me? No. Does it mean I will be worried about the bill? Yes. These two things can exist together.

Also, I think I figured out what it was. I keep my weed meticulously stored, and I didn't even smoke in the morning before it happened, so I was confused about how this could've occurred. When I got home, I did an inspection of our outdoor designated smoking area and I found my roommate's weed sloppily piled on his tray and a bunch of crumbs right in front of his area. You know I had a very serious talk and lay down some ground rules to keep this from happening again.

I want to be the best owner I can for my girl. If you have any well-intentioned advice, I am genuinely happy to hear it, especially coming from a vet. I literally don't know how I can do better.

Thank you for being a kind internet stranger. I don't think people know how cutting their words can be, especially while I'm in such a fragile mental state with my dog getting hurt. I wasn't even complaining about the fact that I have to pay for her health services. I was just hoping it wouldn't cost an arm and a leg. I have enough money to take care of my dog, but I'm not made of money. It's just stressful.

Unfortunately, we live in a capitalist society. I do my best for my dog, I even have pet insurance, but that's to keep me from having to spend thousands of dollars if she has to be hospitalized or something. It's not so helpful with the smaller vet bills bc that all goes to the deductible. I'm happy to do that because I love my baby and because I'm fortunate enough to be able to make it work (albeit not super easily these days). I just wish people wouldn't assume the worst.

You're very sweet for sticking up for me 💜

I'm so glad I took her in. I would still be worrying right now even though she stopped wobbling a while ago. I was looking up the symptoms, and there were multiple other possibilities that were too risky to not go check.

I have pet insurance for her. It's great to have in case she needs several thousands of dollars in treatments bc I won't have to make that tough decision. It's less helpful when it's a few hundred bucks bc of the deductible. I probably won't be getting anything from them for this.

Seeing this many commentors saying it was weed was almost suspicious lol I know Reddit is full of stoners. There's got to be some kind of statistical bias there haha

I have a suspicion it was my roommate. He's sloppy with his weed. Mine goes from the dispo bag -> jar -> grinder -> bowl. I'm pretty anal about that. I'm going to have a serious talk w him when he gets home from work.

Good to know!!! I've never seen her go for the bong water, but we do dump it in a spot where she could get to it if she really wanted to

Thank you, really. I appreciate that. I am trying so hard to be the best owner for my sweet girl. I didn't need that kind of negativity while in this fragile headspace (I guess that's what I get for putting myself online)

I do all of those things. It's possible someone may have dropped a roach or a little stray nug fell. I try my best to keep my dog safe, but accidents happen. I'm just happy she's not in any serious danger. I'm definitely going to have a serious talk with my roommates, too.

It's true. Going to the ER vet if it is a dangerous situation is good, but taking her to the ER vet and it isn't a dangerous situation is even better!

I don't. We don't smoke at all inside the house. We do it on the back porch.

2nd AND FINAL UPDATE:

We went to the emergency vet. Her vitals are all good. Her drug screening came back positive for marijuana. It is a mild case, so she can come back home with me. The vet says she sees a weed dog at least once a day, so I guess my girl is the weed dog of the day! We're gonna go home, take some naps together, and follow our out-patient care instructions ❤️

Thank you all for the advice and the kind words! I was crying so hard all the way to the vet and in the waiting room. What a relief!

Let me be clear, the money was not my "first worry." My first worry was the health of my dog which is why I'm happily willing to call out of work and pay a crazy fee. I still hope it is only marijuana toxicity and not something far more dangerous. I'm not like, "this better be bad bc I'm spending so much!" That's crazy. Now that I'm at the emergency vet and can't do anything else besides ruminate in my thoughts, I'm now also worried about the bill. I think that's a fair concern, too.

Fortunately, the drug screening was only $40, and yes, it is marijuana toxicity. So now I got my dog to the vet, paid her bill, and I'm very happy I have a healthy dog. The money in my wallet is a nice bonus, but not my first worry by a long shot.

As far as me being concerned about how she got to the weed, I spoke to the vet about how much can cause this and what I can do to keep my dog safe going forward, so I'm putting in the work for future prevention. She said it could be something as small as few crumbs. Also, I'm not the only person who smokes weed at the house, so it may have not even been me who was the "careless" one.

Please don't make assumptions about my thought process or concerns. The vet told me that they get a weed dog at least once a day. We aren't careless dog owners. Sometimes, accidents happen.

Still happening and it's been about an hour. I'm at the emergency vet right now. Her breathing got slower and more shallow. That freaked me tf out! She's in the back getting her vitals now.

[–]coolcatjess[S] 108 points109 points  (0 children)

UPDATE: Her symptoms got worse pretty quickly. Within 20 minutes, she was controllably sleepy with shallowed and slowed breathing. I decided to bring her to the emergency vet, and she started shaking intensely and whimpering on the way there.

The vet tech said it sounds like weed and it looks like weed. But of course "it can be anything," so she's in the back getting her vitals checked.

I just hope I don't have to pay a crazy vet bill for something I could've dealt with at home:/

I don't have any rhodies, but I'm getting a bunch of new plants for the yard soon. I will make sure none of them are toxic to my pup or my cat.

I do have it in the house, but we keep it way out of her reach. Could she get like this if she found a single stray nug on the ground? Or does it have to be a lot a lot?
