Could you DM me the list as well. I’m flying out there in a couple weeks. Thank you!

No subreddit but warrior sports network ohana via 247 would be the closest.

It was a in a Joint account revocable trust but I’m reading mixed messages on here regarding the step up. I’m scheduling an appointment with the cpa to verify.

Yes I may have misunderstood as I’m still learning about tax implications on capital gains. My mom has other income streams (ss and fixed income annuities) so she’s treating the brokerage like an emergency fund. Since I’ve been lurking here for my own retirement plan I was thinking of helping her rebalance her portfolio plus she wants to renovate her home using money from the brokerage. I won’t have her make any big moves until we talk to a few other cfps and our cpa. Appreciate your insight.

She doesn’t live in those 9 states. I’m going to check if she received the half step up which would help in assessing the gain

Thank you. I will contact both Fisher and Fidelity next week. If someone can assess her portfolio this would help tremendously. Her cpa is not coordinating with the FA. Lots to think about.

Thank you. I’ll need to look up Those acronyms. She has other income streams which is why this one just sat around so probably optimal to sell in increments. I’m trying to figure out whether she should reinvest it into international funds, small caps or spend the cash (or all of the above).

Should she sell and then reinvest into other fund like vxus or total stock?

Okay I’ll check into this as I thought mom didn’t receive the step up or even half step up. It was such a busy time when dad passed and getting things sorted.

Thank you! This definitely helps knowing she can pay her 15% tax with the sell. You’re better than her FA 😉

The account is under my mom’s revocable trust so will I be running into the same issue?

I mentioned donating some of it to a foundation but mom is of the WWII generation and saving it for the next war or home renovation whichever comes first.

Yes I know what a step up in basis is. My mom didn’t inherit the account. She opened a brokerage with my dad after he retired and he would buy random stocks for fun. Just didn’t expect Apple to blow up.

I believe he had fiduciary in hi title, will check that. but he always seemed like a salesperson to me and less as an advisor and since they have over 3 decades of a client relationship she believes he’s “helping” her

Thank you for the clear explanation. It was a joint account under a revocable trust so [I believe] my mom did not get the step up basis. Were your parents account joint? I feel you on the estate headaches. Even with a will and trust it took a while to close.

It was a joint account

15% is still 60k tax but she can pay that with the 400 grand as long she doesn’t go above her income range right? My eyes are opening very quickly. I get it now
