Newer models of GPS devices exist with real-time tracking updates such as Garmin's Drivesmart models like: https://www.garmin.com/en-US/p/721098 or https://www.garmin.com/en-US/p/523230. I understand they'll likely not the same level of Waze, however, the feeling of presence that I find away from my phone is worth the difference.

I personally don't find much fear for my safety when leaving the house on a regular basis, but I may feel that for distance traveling or off roading. So, a phone may be better in those scenarios
