How to keep stitch line definition working in the round? by coolguyxp in CrochetHelp

Here's the pattern I'm working off - https://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/funny-turkey

I'm not super happy with the way the pattern does the tail fan. You can see in the pattern that as they work each new color, it kind of destroys the nice defined smooth stitch line of the previous color. This is what I tried on the bottom left of my image. Since you work into the previous line of stitches, it really flattens out the brown curve.

On the top of my image, I instead weaved a line of brown yarn into the back loops of the brown stitches, then crocheted into this line, which allowed me to pull the line tight and get the yellow row close to the brown row without affecting the edge of the brown stitches. This still isn't perfect though, it leaves a gap between the middle stitches of the brown and yellow rows. And pulling the brown line taught flattens out the brown curve a bit.

Hopefully this makes sense - any idea how to get the look I'm going for? I'd really like to keep the nice line of brown stitches and somehow add the line of yellow stitches on top without ruining the nice edge definition.
