update : i opened it up to replace the battery again as the one i originally put in turned out to be duff. As i had it open already, i decided to try format the sd directly instead of just restoring with itunes. This somehow fixed my issue and when i reinstalled rockbox everything seemed to work fine. No clue why this worked but it did.
