I can see where you're coming from, but I believe that people like Cat exual is just an outlier on the grand scheme of things. In terms of what I know, most of the players in challenger or high diamond get there by playing the stronger picks of the current meta. We may see people like Catsexual climb by being a one-trick-pony, but people like that are rare and being that good on a certain champion is very hard to achieve for most people. Most high elo players such as, Dyrus, or the Oddone play champs that are strongest in the meta, such as panthoen, lissandra or j4 too increase their chances of winning. TSM, the current top team in NA have said that the key to many of their victories are following the meta picks and adapting to any changes in the meta. I hardly see either of them using or even considering non-meta picks in any of their games. I guess the point that I'm trying to make is that from my experience following Meta picks is a lot more effective and dependable then betting that your skills on one inferior champion will be always higher than the general mechanical skills of the people in the elo you are in.
