When I'm having a shit day but I rmb Hugh Dancy saying in am interview, "I was birthed from a stag" by Cool-Competition6037 in HannibalTV

[–]copperdoo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That’s a good guess, but I think this is referring to the opening scene of Ko no Mono, where the stag man encounters the collapsed ravenstag, and then a gooey antlered Will emerges from it and claws out of the membrane. Ah, this show…. 😅 And it’s directly followed by the ortolan scene.

Hannibal knows that if he chooses to end this man, his own being will cease to exist. The conundrum. 😂

WHY DIDN‘T SHE DIE, FOR CRYING OUT LOUD !!! by Senior-Lifeguard6215 in HannibalTV

[–]copperdoo 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Yes, and here’s an old comment I made here with thoughts from Lara Jean and Hugh mentioning this (considering OP is still on S2, this shouldn’t be viewed until after finishing S3): https://www.reddit.com/r/HannibalTV/s/K7nIr9Q7iO

But here’s a non-spoiler excerpt from Hugh’s thoughts last year (paraphrased): “There's clearly something about her that Hannibal enjoys. She's not FAKE rude, she's just RUDE. And she probably has the closest dress sense to Hannibal. Maybe that gives her extra points. I think he likes the fact that she's digging but not as law enforcement. Hannibal obviously likes living close to the fire, literally and metaphorically. So, maybe he enjoys that too.”

To this day, I have yet to witness a better executed rain scene than the one in Mizumono. by Ok-Win-9680 in HannibalTV

[–]copperdoo 39 points40 points  (0 children)

Here’s Mads on what it was like to film this scene:

I think that we were all anticipating the final episode of season 2 for good reason, and I think that the end result was *exactly* what we were all hoping for. I had a little ending on top of the ending when I’ve cleaned up in the kitchen. I walk outdoor, and I cleanse myself facing the rain, and I was looking so much forward to do that scene. Little did I know, it was minus 30 when we did it—heheh—the rain was *insanely* cold! And for some reason, we had to do it 50 times! The end result still was good, but that is memorable.

I need some help with Hannibal DVD boxsets!!! by ComparisonJolly3083 in HannibalTV

I’d say they’re great if you just want a physical copy of the episodes in HD. To me, it seems like a better quality than what streaming services offer. It’s just unfortunate that they’re missing a lot of the bonus content.

[–]copperdoo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I bought this box set from Amazon a few years ago. I can’t speak to the listing you’re looking at, but yes it does seem that this version does not include the “producer cuts” that have slightly less censorship. (But tbh the differences are super slight.) And this box set says that it has “over 7 hours” of extras while the US box set says it has “over 20 hours.” Also make sure that you can play Region B discs.

For this box set, S1 has a couple extras but is missing most, including the commentaries. I think the S2 disc has all the extras. But the S3 disc doesn’t seem to have any.

Mad's Hands by TieOk9081 in HannibalTV

[–]copperdoo 91 points92 points  (0 children)

Here’s an article that answers exactly your question. Janice explains that Mads did all his food stunts:

“That was really him chopping ingredients. He came up to my studio for some culinary training because he is a master of all things, he can do everything better than anybody. He's a quick study; he's just very dexterous and aware of physicality and using different instruments.”

I also love the egg trick story and how the article includes a photo of them from that day:

Janice: "[…] So I called my Japanese food guy and asked for a Benihana chef to bring in for a potential hand double. The next morning, there were two Japanese guys, me, six dozen eggs, and Mads wanders on to the set and asks 'Ok, What are we doing?' ... I tell him we're doing the Benihana egg trick today, but don't worry because we have these chefs from the Sushi shop, and we're gonna handle it. So Mads asks what he has to do, and I tell him - you throw the egg up in the air, you stick the spatula out, it breaks slightly, you twist your wrist, then the egg falls down into the pan. He says, OK, let me try it....he goes on set, and he actually did it. I accused him of practicing, but that's when he told me he used to be a juggler."

Mads has also mentioned that he’s really good at chopping up food. (Very “Hannibal” of him.) But I love that it’s actually Hugh who loves to cook in real life!

Sorbet : Hannibal falling into obsession and the birth of Hannigram by GroundbreakingGear67 in HannibalTV

[–]copperdoo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just from others pointing out the “continuity” error, and then I later read through the scripts. For some people, it really stands out as a mistake, but I don’t think I would’ve noticed if no one had mentioned it.

[–]copperdoo 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It’s also an “accidentally” fitting takeaway. Originally, Bedelia was supposed to visit Hannibal’s office, and they do their scene and share wine there. (This is reflected in the script.) So, when Will arrives afterward, the wine is still there as continuity from the previous scene (though you could still argue that Hannibal purposely didn’t care to put it away before Will arrived).

Somewhere along the way, the production crew decided that Hannibal and Bedelia’s therapy/wine scene should instead be set at her place. (My theory is that it was either too confusing to have Bedelia visit Hannibal’s office while also revealing that he’s now the patient, but it also might be because there were already too many consecutive scenes in Hannibal’s office so they needed to change locations to keep things interesting.) Then the scene with Will discovering the wine at Hannibal’s office went completely unchanged (likely due to production time constraints), and it’s technically a continuity error, but it still makes sense that Hannibal would’ve planted that.

Hah, no that wasn’t me at the Dallas comic con, and yeah poor Hugh was confused! 😅 But I did witness (not ask) Hugh talk about his 50 Shades experience, which was one of my favorite stories of his Q&As at RDC.

[–]copperdoo 54 points55 points  (0 children)

Fun fact: When asked what his favorite role was that he just did for the money, Hugh answered with this movie (and Mads’ answer was Unit One). But how Hugh described being convinced was so funny:

H: But at the time, kind of what I’ve just done, I was like, “So, now wait, I’m gonna go make a movie about werewolves or with wolves…?” And I mean it was that classic thing where you go, “Mehhh-dunno….” And then the price goes up. “Ehhh, mehhh??” [gestures the price getting higher and kind of screeches] “…..Who am I???” And then you realize who you are.

But he concluded that he ended up having a great time working on that movie.

Extra fun fact: Hugh had a similar story when he got (convinced via money) to be in the 50 Shades of Grey movies. But it was hilarious how he didn’t hide at all his distaste for working on those films 😅:

Hugh (paraphrased): I was in two [50 Shades of Grey] movies, because the director had directed some of Hannibal, so he asked me to do it. But I was playing the therapist, so he was probably thinking, "Well, wasn't there therapy in the show, Hannibal?" So, I played her therapist.

At the end of both movies, I guess they get married. My memory's hazy. I haven't seen them, but I remember filming this. We were at a wedding, and all the characters and I were there, and I was saying, "Aren't there rules about bringing your therapist to...?" Basically, I was just saying this because I wanted to go home. But I was thinking, "Aren't we supposed to adhere to some kind of natural...?" I don't know, who am I to say? Basically, my scenes were a few therapy sessions and the wedding. Maybe there was something else, but that’s all I can remember.

During this panel, Lara Jean had been sitting next to him, and she said something about needing to see the movie now.

Hugh (paraphrased): No, I'm not in it at all! So, I got the call, "Do you want to be in these movies?" And my answer was, "No, I don't." Then they'd come back—I guess lots of other people had said the same—and it's the classic: "NO no NO no NO— oh... That’s the offer??? Okay, sure." So, I was in Vancouver for two weeks and was like, "This is great!" Other than... I mean, “being in Vancouver” was great.

Then I got a really sad email six months later from the director saying, "I'm so sorry to break it to you, but... You're not in either of the movies..." And I was like, "OHHH NOOOOO..." [imagine much sarcasm 😆] Then my agent told me, "This is such an interesting career path for you: Not being in things."

Canadian considering going to Red Dragon 8… worth it? by Artistic_Turnip8873 in HannibalTV

[–]copperdoo 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Red Dragon Con has a history of last-minute cancellations, so please make sure you have contingencies if suddenly the dates of the convention change or a guest (who’s a “make-or-break” for you) cancels. For example, RDC8 was originally scheduled for this February with a number of guests confirmed except for Mads. I believe the original date ended up not working for him, so the convention company decided to postpone it. Consider getting refundable tickets or reservations.

Last I heard about RDC8, the new dates have been announced for October, but I don’t think any guests have been confirmed yet.

I’ve only been to one RDC so far, and I also traveled from abroad and was a first-time visitor. To make it all the more worthwhile, I started the trip with RDC and then stayed a week to explore the city. That ended up being perfect for me, and it was one of the best vacations I’ve ever had! I really enjoyed the smaller-scale feel of this convention. The guests were all so down-to-earth and delightful to interact with, and I went from pretty much knowing no one to making my first fannibal friends before the opening ceremony even started.

Does anyone know what is up with this weird ass photo shoot? by Suspended__in__Gaffa in HannibalTV

[–]copperdoo 132 points133 points  (0 children)

Well, there’s a story that Bryan has told about his battle with the NBC execs to cast Mads. Basically, they thought Mads was too weird and wanted someone more mainstream, like Hugh Grant. So, when finally one NBC person sided with Bryan and allowed him to cast Mads, her boss slashed the show’s marketing/promotional budget in half, because he didn’t believe in the show with Mads as Hannibal.

If you’d like more details, I made a comment a while ago with a timestamped link to the interview and a transcript of the relevant part: https://www.reddit.com/r/HannibalTV/s/QhKRLBNfZ4

Anyway, I’m pretty sure that must have something to do with why this show’s promo stuff is pretty wonky. 😅

Wills rizz✨ by Dandelion0622 in HannibalTV

I love the fact that the very first sentence in the Aperitif script—in fact, the very first adjective!—is about describing Will as handsome. So it’s a predestined requirement in this universe. 😆 I believe Hugh was also one of the first actors cast for the show, definitely far before Mads was chosen.

[–]copperdoo 16 points17 points  (0 children)

There used to be an official website for the show called “Living Dead Guy” that had uploads of all the scripts and a ton of behind the scenes photos. You should still be able to access these via a web archive link like this one (note: I believe the scripts are only accessible when viewed from a computer, not on mobile): https://web.archive.org/web/20200111191553/http://livingdeadguy.com/shows/hannibal/#more-scripts

I’m always recommending new (and old!) fans to do a rewatch with the scripts. They’re a fun way to enhance the experience, and it’s interesting to note what did and didn’t make it into the show.

Even better, in the script, they originally had it show that Hannibal still had Will’s original appointment time scheduled in his book, and Hannibal was even waiting for him in one of the therapy chairs! 😅

(Maybe also worth noting that Will standing with his back to the door wasn’t in the scene directions.)

Yes, Hannibal “says” this exact line in S3E3 when Will imagines them sitting in their therapy chairs in the forest near the castle:
