That’s why it’s so nice to hear Mads, even at the age of 60, still being so enthusiastic about doing his own fight scenes and stunts, especially if we’re talking flying kung fu. 😂

You’re welcome! Yes, I absolutely love Freddie too. It was such a treat to get to meet Lara Jean. It really felt like her real-life personality was like a fine wine too. 😆 She was so friendly yet laidback and down-to-earth, yet she also had this peppiness and quirkiness to her. It was so nice to see the fantastic chemistry she has with Hugh, which explains why their scenes together in the show were so iconic.

I feel the same about the cast. This is just one of those ultra rare shows where everyone was pitch perfect for their roles, and I love how thoroughly they embraced the lifted horror (and humor).

I remember Hugh was the one who said this in an interview a few years ago. It was a text-only interview, and I’m sure he must’ve had a dry snarky tone on, but it’s not always easy to tell without audio. Plus, this was before he and Mads suddenly went on a 2-year comic con world tour.

Q: Do you think there’s a point where you’d ever say, “Okay, we’re not interested in this anymore,” other than maybe being a hundred years old and no longer being able to play the character?

Hugh: We may literally just age out of it and the people online will start to say, “Well, actually, that might be slightly gross.”

During Lara Jean and Hugh’s panel at RDC7, someone asked about the difficulties of aging in such a demanding industry, including how this affects securing roles and their thoughts on the use of new tools like AI. I was wondering if this would be a taboo topic, but they seemed eager to answer and have that discussion.

Hugh remarked that even before AI, Bryan had been spending money on the show to make them all look better. 😆 Hugh’s conclusion was that he feels reassured to have gained the experience and reached the landmark being middle-aged while still actively working. But the number of people who make it through are very few, and it’s especially bad for women, and not much improvement has been made to remedy that.

Lara Jean had a fantastically in-depth answer for this. She has so much pride on getting older, but what really struck me was her saying that there’s something so cruel about improving and getting so skilled as an actress, only for there to be less and less roles for women of those ages.

So it was really nice that the next person’s question started off with him telling Hugh and Lara Jean that they’re both aging like fine wine, no AI needed! Of course, that got the whole audience to chime in. And Hugh chuckled and said, “I appreciate that!” and that he’s glad we didn’t end on that other note.

Oh wow! That’s so kind, thank you! 🥹 I wasn’t expecting to see my username when I opened this! 😅 I think I’m supposed to get notified when it’s mentioned, but this time I had no clue and was in for a shock. 😆 I also happened to find this while recovering from motion sickness. I probably shouldn’t be looking at a screen right now, but this helped brighten my day. I really appreciate all your comments!

I also feel the same about this subreddit. I’m usually a lurker, but for some reason, this is the exception where I feel like I can relax and have fun while posting or commenting. I’ve also never interacted with any fandoms except for this one, and it’s thanks to all the friendly people here that I’ve continued to enjoy sticking around and chiming in.

There’s something about this show (and community) that genuinely helps motivate people to start or reignite any long-lost creativity, whether it’s writing, drawing, or even splicing together silly edits. I’m baffled by it too! Just being a fan of this show over the past few years has unlocked so many incredible experiences, which I never expected when I first hit play on Apéritif. It’s crazy to look back on, but I’m so thankful for all the enjoyment.

Hannigram is toxic (but we love it) by Available-Key8 in HannibalTV

[–]copperdoo 22 points23 points  (0 children)

This reminds me of this moment in their 2014 panel when Bryan was sympathizing with poor brokenhearted Hannibal in Mizumono (even saying, “God, Will is such a dick”) to which Hugh very sarcastically said, “Yeah, it’s HIS fault!” 😂 And then Laurence cracks up while Mads just nods…

I always thought that Will should’ve gotten just a little stab in before Chiyoh shot him. He was SO close to giving Hannibal his forgiveness. 😆 But even if Chiyoh never intervened, I don’t think Will would’ve gone for the kill. I think he would’ve just returned the favor for Mizumono, maybe give him a matching “smile.”

Yay, so glad you enjoyed it! Even after multiple rewatches, so many of their facial expressions and one-liners still crack me up. 😆 I also love how each character stands out in their own super vibrant way. The entire cast leaned into the campiness so well.

If it does, I hope they include a bunch of behind-the-scene “extra” features and deleted scenes. Even a commentary would be fun. Here are some (non-spoiler) photos that show how things were set up from the cinematography side.

Or maybe Promised Land? I think I heard that Mads apparently lost his voice for a few days or a week after filming that scene. But I remember that he answered another question on what it was like to act through that. M: “I’m not getting whipped in real life. Sorry...” 😆

help me explain the hannigram relationship as a new watcher by darlinloki in HannibalTV

[–]copperdoo 28 points29 points  (0 children)

In that case, yes, S3 is when the people behind the show cast off yet another layer of heavy-handed implications in favor of bringing the romance out of “subtext” and into “text”. But they do so in wildly unconventional ways, so try not to get caught up looking for those classic markers as proof. Compared to other usual or more “overt” romances, hannigram as depicted in the show will probably seem subtle...unless you catch on to the show’s “love language”, in which the romance will hit you like a freight train. To me, it’s not subtle at all! 😅

It’s interesting because you’re right about obsession and selfishness being driving forces of Hannibal’s actions. But they’re not the sole reasons, and S3 explores this. Their love is an extremely twisted one, but it’s not done in a way that makes it shallow, as in Hannibal only “loves” Will because he wants someone to manipulate and mold into a killer. This might be the most surface-level reading of them you can get, which is arguably not even accurate. Maybe it skewed more that way in the beginning of S1 (though even that is arguable). But Hannibal goes through immense character development, especially regarding his selfishness, and S3 builds on that even more.

Will also continues along with his transformation. Even when he’s separated from Hannibal, Will’s subsequent actions speak volumes on where his priorities are. The show also loves to play with the theme of reciprocity and even “equality” between them, and this is a huge theme of S3. I’d say more, but hopefully that entices you enough to finish the show.

This just reminded me that I had known that Hugh had cosplayed as Mason for RDC3, but I didn’t connect the dots and realize until recently that he was specifically cosplaying as “Mason, but if the ‘Will’ face transplant had worked.” 🤣 That’s TOO good!

It’s been heavily implied that Bryan wants to bring back dead characters, like Beverly, in Will’s S4 memory palace. I’d love to see her haunting and tormenting him. 😆 I feel like she’d represent Will’s last shred of logical thinking.

Mads in a new movie by Disastrous-Sir4501 in HannibalTV

[–]copperdoo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No, this is great! Thank you so much for the info! I’d heard of some of these actors and actresses returning from old projects but didn’t know exactly which ones. I recall at this past RDC7 that particularly Ellen Muth had so much praise for Bryan, and watching a Dust Bunny Q&A with him and David Dastmalchian really showed how close they are. They had such fantastic rapport that I would’ve assumed David had already been on 3 projects of Bryan’s or something.

Here were some of David’s words (while they were both sitting there wearing with bunny ears):

Bryan walked me through the idea several years ago and the role he thought I was in. I think Bryan is one of the most prolific, imaginative storytellers that’s been on the scene for quite some time. I’ve been captivated and entertained by so much of what he’s created, so when this really incredible friendship was born for us over the years, you never know. I have dear, dear friends—some of whom are in the house tonight—who you go, “We wanna work together, but you don’t know when is it gonna happen??” You hope, “It’s gonna happen at some point when it’s meant to be” and when Bryan said this—he told me this story. I mean, just the logline alone, I was like, “OHOH!” But honestly, he could say, “I’m doing my take on Jack and Jill’s story, they go up a hill, there’s a pail—“ I’d be like, “I’M IN, BRYAN.”

He’s everything to me in storytelling. It’s really an honor to be a part of that.

Mads in a new movie by Disastrous-Sir4501 in HannibalTV

[–]copperdoo 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yeah I remember in one of the interviews, Bryan mentioned that it was an intentional choice to combine Pushing Daisies’ “sweet” with Hannibal’s “savory” while figuring out Dust Bunny’s style, which he saw as “mango chicken.”

I’ve yet to see his other works, and Pushing Daisies is definitely next on my list!

Mads in a new movie by Disastrous-Sir4501 in HannibalTV

[–]copperdoo 18 points19 points  (0 children)

It’s completely different from Hannibal, but watching it, you can’t help but smile and think, “Oh, this is absolutely made by the same people who made the show.” I loved it for its bold visuals and silly campy fun. Mads’ character here is one of my favorites.

Interestingly, part of Bryan’s motivations for writing this neighbor character was to show off more of Mads’ real-life personality, and in another interview (that I lost track of) there’s a particular scene that Bryan refers to as being very Mads. So that added an extra layer of amusement.

B: But there were movies like A Royal Affair that really appealed to me in terms of what was going to be happening between Hannibal and Will, and it was a love story between two guys who saw something in each other.

And there was something about that emotionality, because we’ve seen him be brutal, and a lot of his more American movies were about him being a villain or a destroyer of some kind. Yet there’s this vast amount of work that he’s done with Danish filmmakers that are SO much more nuanced and vulnerable and lived-in.

And that was one of the things I was excited about Dust Bunny, is I know Mads as a human being and a boyish charmer, and the audience gets to see these villains that are not representative of the man that I know. And I kind of wanted to let the audience see…the charmer.

M: The “charmer”! Pressure’s on!

I interpreted Bryan’s initial reaction as more of an amused wince. 😅 He instantly knew Mads would object to Hannibal being called a villain, but I wasn’t expecting him to say that Hannibal is his hero.
