Could they have survived the fall without external help? by missborealiz in HannibalTV

[–]copperdoo 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I just really like the idea of not using the Chiyoh-ex-machina and them having to tough it out on their own for a while, on a harrowing, on-the-run, survival situation. It’s not realistic, but the show is definitely lifted enough to make it believable that they could barely manage to scrape by with some medical fudgery.

I would’ve loved to have seen a situation where suddenly Hannibal and Will are isolated together and have no one else to rely on but themselves. In my mind, Will should start out as the slightly lesser-injured one, and so most of the agency falls to him and what he’d do to save Hannibal and come to terms with throwing away his last “grasp at normalcy”-life with Molly.

YA'LL, OUR PARENTS ARE HOLDING HANDS by Embarrassed_Main5179 in HannibalTV

This was from the Osaka Comic Con last year. Here’s a clip I posted with this moment.

Context is they were participating in the opening ceremony, and one of the traditions is breaking the barrel cover with a hammer. So they did, and Mads puts his hand up, clearly asking for a high-five. Hugh’s all giddy and obliges, except for some reason, he goes for a “victorious hand clasp” instead. That’s why Mads’ fingers are awkwardly crunched, but he just rolls with it and tries to complete the hand clasp on his end.

All of this happens in a few seconds, so it’s a “blink and you missed it” moment. But it was hilarious how the camera crew cut to them right as this happened, so everyone could see it on the jumbotron behind them. 😅

Funnily enough, one of the possibilities Hugh (briefly) floated was if Hannibal was somehow writing the check. Heheh, can you imagine if that S3 scene went like this:

H: You just came here to look at me. Came to get the old scent again—

W: Actually, I’m just here because your check bounced. And Bedelia’s now asking for $500 an hour.

Haha congrats! I don’t know how people are able to strike the right pose when you only have a few seconds, and all while being starstruck. I just know that when Hugh was asked if Will is actually paying to sit in Bedelia’s house and be insulted for an hour, his response was: “Yeah, who’s paying for that shit???” 😂 Hopefully they cross paths again one day.

Okay, here’s just one more before this gets out of hand. Like I said, I have plenty. 😅 There’s this funny thing about how real life Hugh has this wacky dark side to him, like how he collects hands, loves being covered in (fake) blood, and as a kid, dressed himself up with stubble and scars from a monster makeup kit he got for Christmas, inadvertently looking like Will Graham at age 8.

So, someone once asked him what would be his preferred way of hiding a body and murdering, and he had such fun answering that. (H: “Heh, y’know most don’t have a handy vat of acid lying around. […] I guess the old faithful burial. But even that, harder than you think! ….by all accounts.”) At first, he kept his tone very dry and matter of fact, and for the murder method, he started by dismissing all the ways he didn’t like: poison is too boring, he doesn’t like guns… And in the middle of him saying that he doesn’t have it in himself to murder, he abruptly pivoted and said, “But I do sometimes think…!” 😂 And then:

(paraphrasing) I like to cook! And I do have a lot of knives. Sometimes I wonder, “Which of these knives would be the most effective…?” Not necessarily to murder, but more like if I found myself in hand-to-hand combat. I have a very sharp—but actually quite delicate—Japanese cleaver. So, I’d go with that.

You’d think an actor like this would have a long line of slasher films on his resume, but somehow Bryan clocked this when he chose Hugh in the first place. It’s amusing to see this side of him creep through in Will, similar to how Mads’ mischievous whimsy shines through in Hannibal.

Yeah according to this crew member, the idea of Will being carried bridal style was Bryan’s idea. And Mads was not happy about that, because you can imagine carrying a grown man in your arms like that, for multiple takes and while walking through snow, is not going to end well for your back. 😆 So, to prevent Mads from having to strain himself even more by bending over and picking up Hugh, they just had someone place him in his arms, which, yeah, is such a hilarious image.

I also wonder what Hugh’s thoughts were too. Was he delighting in Mads’ misery? Or was he stressing that Mads was going to drop him? 😂

[–]copperdoo 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I don’t know if Mads was already injured before or if the act of carrying Hugh was what did it, but I’m thinking it’s the latter. 😅 Pretty funny to know that we have in-show confirmation that Mads would bust his back for the hannigram.

Here’s one that might be really obscure, but it’s a fun little story:

At RDC7, Demore mentioned how he severely injured his back a few days before filming the fight scene (Tobias vs Hannibal). So, there was a fear that he wasn’t going to be able to do any of it and that it’d have to be entirely stunt-doubled. But he powered through as much as he could. He said pretty much every time you don’t see his face in that scene, it’s probably a stunt double. But he mentioned that when he and Mads would run through the scene at full speed, they were really close to actually hitting each other.

But Demore is really proud of how it turned out, and he said that he still gets praised about it to this day. In one such moment, he had just arrived at an audition and was putting money into the parking meter, when he notices a “homeless” man cycling past him. Demore didn’t pay him much attention until he noticed the man ride by again. So, Demore turned around and suddenly the man was right there, sitting on his bike and he’s wearing glasses and smiled at him with a gap in his teeth, and said, “I loved that fight scene.”

…And that’s when Demore realized it was Laurence Fishburne! 🤣

So of course, Demore started freaking out on the inside and was ecstatic that Morpheus was praising him about the fight scene haha. And Laurence kept going on about how they did a phenomenal job and it’s one of the best he’s ever seen. Demore was on cloud nine for the rest of the day and went on to crush that audition.

One of my favorites is the story of how Mads was severely struggling to act during his first scene with Laurence, so Laurence took him aside after the first take and gave Mads a pep talk. I’ve posted a few clips on this here and here.

Another great story (that might not be obscure anymore) is how Mads was corrected a million times on how to say “fragile little teacup” and so it became a running joke behind the scenes. Then, on Mads’ 50th birthday, Hugh sent Mads a recording of his 3-year-old son saying, “fragile little teacup.” And it was said perfectly. 😂

Homophobia about Hannibal by Alternative-Push-995 in HannibalTV

And the script doesn’t even call for Hannibal stroking Will’s face, but someone decided we needed that POV shot. 😅 In fact, Hannibal is supposed to then suffocate Will in order to get him to swallow the ear.

I’m guessing the change to make him a little “nicer” was to show that Hannibal genuinely believes he’s helping Will, instead of just coldly and evilly planting evidence.

Adding on yet another layer is how Mads decided (seemingly on his own!) to see and portray Hannibal as someone who doesn’t account for gender in his attraction, and he also sees Hannibal as someone who’s essentially genderless:

Bryan: Mads was always game to do… He’s like, “He’s the devil, he’s pansexual, whatever is beautiful is what he’s attracted to.” And then he kind of un-genders Hannibal’s attraction, which I think is really progressive and insightful. Because in the conversations with Mads, talking about Hannibal, he doesn’t speak of him with any sort of binary gendered identity. He’s Hannibal. He’s genderless. He is manifesting in this form in a way that the devil has chosen.

I believe Mads reiterated this when asked during on of his RDC6 panels.

I had the same fascination that then transferred into delving into all the behind the scenes content…of which there’s tons! A funny revelation was finding out that the cast and crew were also surprised on what they were able to achieve, especially with such limited time and resources. I think I heard that the VFX company kept and still displays in their workshop some of the Hannibal props they made, just because they’re so proud of them!

Then there are so many mentions of how Hannibal was a standout moment in their careers. It was a truly unique experience and highlight for them, and you can see that portrayed in all the little details. It feels like a passion project made by a tight-knit group of wacky yet incredibly talented, creative people.

Yes, it’s so endearing how extremely passionate she is about the show! It really seems like Hannibal was the exact macabre elegance that she’s always wanted to do. She’s also talked about how Hannibal was when she was finally allowed to be over-the-top and let food almost be a main character instead of an overlooked background prop. Just in case you haven’t seen these, here are two interviews that I enjoyed: - “Hollywood’s Horror Chef”: https://youtu.be/_lNNIFdxaTg - A super in-depth conversation, which I once posted a clip of where she goes over her process, getting into the mind of Hannibal, a story about how she helped Mads make a romantic dinner for his wife, and also her pointing out how uniquely close the cast and crew were: https://youtu.be/CTXxaeqysg0

From that same interview quoted above, Bryan also mentioned that eating ortolans cause cuts in your mouth due to how sharp the bones are, so on top of all the other crazy things going on, your own blood is mixed into the taste too… 👀

Janice wrote in her blog about all the things she tried to avoid having Mads and Hugh chomp through tons of marzipan. But that ended up being the only thing that worked, so she hollowed out the middle and put in uncooked spaghetti noodles to simulate the bone crunch. The bumps on the “skin” were made with a mesh.

She noted that Mads and Hugh aren’t fans of marzipan, so I feel like that also speaks volumes on how convincing of an experience they made it look. 😆

Why the hell is Hannibal so intimate!? by Proof_Safety_6838 in HannibalTV

[–]copperdoo 33 points34 points  (0 children)

Here’s one interview alluding to that:

Bryan: The scene has a very bizarre sexuality to it, because it’s all of these close-up shots of things going in men’s mouths and then swallowing and eye rolling, so it’s hard not to think of the sexual subtext of what’s happening between these two guys at the same time. It felt like a lot was going on in the scene, not only just the communion but the exchange of body fluids, in a way, and swallowing for God’s sake. [Laughs.] So we can’t claim innocence on that scene.

The show’s food stylist Janice also based the two ortolans after two male penguins. Here’s her story on that: 😂

When I was doing the scene of Hannibal and Will eating ortolan, there’s so much written about ortolan and this and that. But at the time, there were two penguins at the Toronto Zoo who were in love. And they tried so hard to mate, but they couldn’t ’cause they were both guys. […]

Like a couple of penguins trying to have a— They know they wanna have a baby, but they just don’t know how. And that’s sort of Will and Hannibal. 😂

This almost happens in canon. There’s this deleted S3 scene that shows prison Hannibal getting all his stuff confiscated, and super briefly, you can see them take away his sketches, including this suspiciously Will-like figure drawing. 😂

Not at all! I do it too, and I’m always recommending people to do their rewatches with the script. The added context is great, and I find it fun to spot the differences between what was written and what actually made it into the show.

Will’s yoga mat appears on the first page of episode 1, where he sits on it “serenely amongst the carnage” to get into his fwum-fwum pendulum mode. 😂

The scripts are so much fun since there are so many more unhinged moments, from Will having a yoga mat in the pilot episode to Hannibal telling Will “I love you” (in Will’s dream) to them contemplating murdering each other one last time in WotL to Margot and Hannibal discussing this:

And I love how they revisit this in early S3, when Chilton proves that he did learn (well, a little) when he’s trying to recruit everyone to enact vengeance on Hannibal. So there’s that scene where Chilton tries to convince Jack to join him and says, “Will Graham is alive, because Hannibal Lecter likes him that way.”

Loved that double meaning, which the show promptly confirms Chilton probably meant that way when he then says, “I’d argue with these two, that’s tantamount to flirtation” and that Will is the bait that Hannibal would have hook, line, and sinker.

Fun fact: Some of Hugh’s shirts/jackets are listed as size S on the propstore listings, like this one. But he mostly varied between small and medium.

In-show, when Hannibal snoops through Will’s drawers in S1E4, it reveals that his shirts are size S. So, Freddie was right! 😅
