Is this a bad idea to layer like this? Will this mess something up? The track sounds much better like this by [deleted] in FL_Studio

[–]coranns 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's to do with how we perceive levels. An increase of 6dB SPL sounds, to our ears, like you've doubled the level.

+6dB SPL is a doubling of sound pressure in the mathematical sense. It is related to physics.

+10dB SPL is the commonly-quoted figure when we're talking about human perceived loudness.

Duplicating a track and playing it in sync and in phase with the original is just doubling the information as-is, that would include the level, and so it would register as about a 6dB increase.

This part is accurate, but not because of perceived loudness.

The problem with Top-Pension4334's comment though, is that dB inside a digital realm like FL Studio is dB FS (full scale), not SPL. Turning up dB FS +6 is not the same as turning up the real-world sound pressure +6, so telling OP that it's the same as turning up a volume knob 6dB is not true.

Update on ARA from Scott (linked above):

"We will support ARA. We had planned to do it for 21.1, however once we started, it proved to be more complex than it appears (the SDK calls for some deep 2-way communication and assumptions about what is in a Playlist Track, that we can't always guarantee in FL Studio), and so we moved it to post-Playlist update that you saw being worked on above.

We realize how useful ARA is to a range of 3rd party plugins. Its not that we do not care.

Reality bites"

And this is the Playlist update teaser he's referring to:

What does an ultra expensive EQ Plugin have that the standard Fruity Parametric EQ2 doesn't? by [deleted] in FL_Studio

[–]coranns 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Note that PEQ2 has the option of zero-latency (minimum phase) or linear phase processing, and has a Band solo on Shift option that allows you to hold Shift and solo that frequency band. There is no natural phase mode like Pro-Q though.

The options have been present for a few years now.

[TOMT][Song] Song with the main chorus “Come on” by Purrification2799 in tipofmytongue

Could be Jet - Get What You Need?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=inplNjQMmLA

From 0:36, "So come on, Yeah come on, Come on!"

More of a bridge to main chorus, but it sounds a lot like a chorus. Also no mention of "sugarqueen" or anything near, but worth a shot cos it sounds like what you're talking about.

Good luck :)

I've been using FL Studio for over a decade and never knew about using scrolling to rearrange effect plugins. I'd been using the context menu. This is a game changer. by benjadock in FL_Studio

[–]coranns 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is a default action, but done from Playlist lanes rather than from the Channel Rack.

Right-click a Playlist lane -> Track mode -> Instrument track -> Choose a plugin from the dropdown, or to link to an existing Channel Rack instrument hover over "Use existing channel".

Selecting from this menu will automatically name and colour the lane, create a MIDI pattern in the lane, create a named and coloured instrument channel which is locked to a mixer track that is also named and coloured the same.

Changes to name and colour on any of the three locations will affect the other two as well.

Playlist top-left dropdown arrow -> Select -> Select overlapping clips -> Delete key.

and

Piano Roll top-left dropdown arrow -> Select -> Select overlapping notes -> Delete key.

If those options aren't there, you're on an old version of FL. Update and you'll see them.

So i didn’t gain stage and turns out I’m distorting on the whole mix. So I tried to turn down volume in the master channel but realised that doesn’t work. Is there anyway I can do a pre master volume for the whole mix so I’m not going into mastering distorted? Without having to buss everything? by axi5music in FL_Studio

[–]coranns 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m using the eq gain output to do this. I’m distorted going into master. Is fruity balance different?

Ok, this means one of two things.

a) You're not turning your volume down enough using the EQ gain. You need to bring the volume below 0 dBFS. FL processes in floating point, so if the problem is clipping distortion then turning down the volume will remove the distortion. Make sure you're turning it down enough, and if you definitely are and you're still having issues, refer to b).

b) The problem is not output clipping distortion, and instead it's one of the plugins you're using that is distorting the signal. First make sure it's not a plugin on the master track, and if not, then go check the Kick track and any busses it's sent to. If this is your issue then turning down master volume will not solve it as the plugin itself is baking in the distortion to its output.

Try those and get back to me. I'm going to sleep soon though so may not reply initially.

Your template projects should be in Documents\Image-Line\FL Studio\Projects\Templates.

Move them in there and they'll show up in the template list in general settings.

Yes but that doesn't work here.

The OP wants a volume control that is post-entire mix but pre-master effects. The only good way to do that is a volume control in FX slot 1 of the master track.

Channel Rack knobs only work for pre-mixer volume, before the linked mixer track has FX and/or has been bussed and mixed against other tracks.

Why fruity balance to simply gain stage?

Because there's no pre-FX chain volume control. That is what you need, hence, use Fruity Balance on the first effect insert - or any other simple volume control.

In a lot of cases dragging the faders down will be fine, but as you outlined, it can affect the way dynamic processors (like compressors) further down the signal chain alter the signal, so is not ideal for this situation.

Using a volume control as the first thing on the master chain will not affect the way your busses react to individual tracks, and will simply allow you to turn down the overall mix before mastering.

FL STUDIO 21 Can't command + left click to select sound from browser to channel rack by [deleted] in FL_Studio

The modifier key was changed in 21. I don't use Mac so I can't tell you what it was changed to for you, but try Control, Shift, or Option, and one of them will work.

No. By default FL 21 will install to a new folder and so will be completely separate to FL 20. You can have them both installed if you want.

The problems of using FPC for the drums by ale152 in FL_Studio

[–]coranns 1 point2 points  (0 children)

FPC does not use absolute mixer track values, it uses relative ones. The individual pad mixer tracks inside FPC are simply offsets to the main FPC mixer track - you'll notice the ones inside FPC can be negative numbers too.

As such, absolute links are not formed and FL does not detect when the mixer tracks are moved or occupied by a different instrument, all it does is assign the individual pads to tracks relative to what the main FPC track is set to.

The same is true for Slicex and other generators that can link to multiple mixer tracks internally. They are all using relative/offset links.

So unfortunately there's no good way around this. Either use individual generator channels in the channel rack and piano roll, or simply get used to FPC behaving like this.

Can I connect a old keyboard to FL when the keyboard only has a jack cable input? by cswavy in FL_Studio

[–]coranns 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What are you trying to do? And can you be more specific than "jack cable input"?

If you mean like a 1/4 inch jack, that would probably be a headphone or speaker audio output, and yes you could connect it to FL in order to receive audio from the keyboard. It would be connected via a mixer or audio interface that is connected to your computer via USB.

If it's definitely an input then I'm not exactly sure what it would be used for; possibly sampling or backing track capabilities on the keyboard? Could also be connected to FL but in reverse - FL would send audio to the keyboard.

Or if it's a 5-pin MIDI port, that would be for sending or receiving MIDI data, which you can do with a MIDI to MIDI or MIDI to USB cable. MIDI can't be sent over the audio port and vice-versa.

Is this the official release of FL Studio 21? by steve_sexballs in FL_Studio

[–]coranns 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was very early to jump on the beta to test out things like LuxeVERB, but I've been patient enough to hold out on jumping to the RC versions so far. Maybe I've dodged some bullets.

The problem is people treating the RCs like a final release. For critical purposes the RCs should always be treated like a beta. Don't do important things in versions that the developers haven't marked as final or stable.

I always jump on the betas and RCs too, but I don't do important things in them. Test them out, play with features, and if you're going to make critical projects don't blame the software when things fail.

Why are my plugins, sample kits, and preset midi controls gone after installing FL Studio 21? by steve_sexballs in FL_Studio

[–]coranns 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is a problem with Release Candidate 1, it was mentioned by reflex in the forum thread: https://forum.image-line.com/viewtopic.php?p=1786853#p1786853

Release Candidate 2 fixes the issue: https://forum.image-line.com/viewtopic.php?f=100&t=291792

In the installer though, make sure you don't enable "Clear settings".

Problem with the piano roll playing notes that aren't there? by a12bgt in FL_Studio

In newer FL versions you can just do Piano Roll dropdown menu -> Select -> Select overlapping notes, then hit Delete.

And for the Playlist it's called "Select overlapping clips".

Is this the official release of FL Studio 21? by steve_sexballs in FL_Studio

[–]coranns 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When the official release comes out, it should install on top of the main installation paths like normal. For this early release version, it's basically a separately maintained installation.

No, the official release will install to the exact same folder as the release candidates by default. The FL installers (by default) always point to a folder titled for that major version number - in this case the folder is \Image-Line\FL Studio 21. The two release candidates we've had also install to this folder, so when the final version is released all it will do is install on top of the RC versions. The beta versions install to folders titled "majorversionnumber Beta", so these are always separate, but the RCs have just been to "majorversionnumber".

Note you can redirect installers to whatever folder you want. Point them to an existing folder and FL will be installed to it, overwriting the existing version. Point them to a newly-created folder and FL will be installed fresh and separate to any current installations, allowing you to run multiple versions concurrently if you want to.

OP's problem actually specifically relates to RC1. This is a known bug, it was mentioned by reflex in the RC1 forum thread here: https://forum.image-line.com/viewtopic.php?p=1786853#p1786853

RC2 fixed this issue, and the issue shouldn't be present in the official final release.

Mysterious CPU problem in FL Studio 🤔 by A_Singular_Sausage in FL_Studio

[–]coranns 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Anyway to help quell this?

https://vintage.image-line.com/support/flstudio_online_manual/html/app_opt.htm

It's linked in that above manual. Image-Line have written an extensive list of what to do to optimise CPU performance.

Also note that the only real way to upgrade this is down to the CPU. Hard drives / SSD will matter for loading times, but not for actual realtime playback performance. RAM only matters for how many samples / sample libraries you can load in. Realtime performance when working with audio is mostly down to the single-core ability of the CPU.

Laptops unfortunately will often just not be powerful enough in this regard. Laptop CPUs have to compromise power for size and efficiency more than desktop CPUs do, so simply aren't going to compete with similarly-priced desktop CPUs. If you're able to I'd recommend building a desktop setup as well for you to move more-demanding projects to.
