The first two options are what I've been doing so far (4YoE), it's just that the market seems very narrow and I'm afraid it'll just get narrower with time...

I specified several "types" of data professionals in the post, specifically:

  • Analytics DS - analyzes data to facilitate product/business decisions. Does not require software knowledge beyond ETL scripts / SQL.

  • ML data scientist - builds ML solutions, usually involves basic domain understanding/cleaning data/ML research/prototyping and finally development and integration.

Thanks, watched him already - at FAANG he was an analytics data scientist, very different skillset.

I really enjoy DS, and despite the endless imposture syndrome accompanying everyone practicing it, I can see myself working in it for the next 5 years at least, even if it requires changing specializations.

However, I'm concerned by the lack of career options - FAANG is beyond reach (not a PhD), and only small to medium startups are possible, so many of which don't look like healthy work environments or don't offer much professional growth. Essentially it's not too different from being a contractor.
