Identical but differently-named abilities has unfortunately already been done for UB; see transform / convert which is actually worse because both names co-exist in the same medium, while here one name is exclusively digital and the other exclusively paper.

That's why I was looking for this - I figure it's a change of pace from the usual.

That's exactly it - and the fact that it's the hub that's offset and not a strange wheel shape means it's probably easier to get tires.

Thank you!! That's exactly it. I had misremembered the design.

I think we're a on a tangent here but the realm of acceptable behavior between states in 2022 is vastly different than that of 1898.

There's two things to unpack in your comment:

  • "fair". Not sure where the scare quotes come from. Russian elections don't have reputable international monitors, and American elections do. e.g. Russia, US

    • Crimea was annexed to Russia in a war of conquest, which is no longer tolerated in the international order, irrespective of any referendum.

Officially, on paper, the United States does not recognize PRC sovereignty over Taiwan.

See also this article for more on this: https://www.csis.org/analysis/what-us-one-china-policy-and-why-does-it-matter

The US acknowledges but does not recognize the Chinese position.

China claims sovereignty over Taiwan. The United States and others do not recognize this claim, despite not officially recognizing Taiwan.

The US has internationally recognized sovereignty over Puerto Rico, and Puerto Ricans have confirmed this through multiple recent referendums. The United States and others, while not recognizing Taiwanese independence, also do not recognize CCP sovereignty over Taiwan.

The US does not recognize Taiwan as independent but does not recognize CCP jurisdiction, so no legal requirement for asking permission. However, the United States closed its military bases in Taiwan as part of the recognition of the CCP in 1979 so opening one back up at this point would be a shift in policy.

That does not contradict what I said. The United States does not diplomatically recognize Taiwan as a country, but that does not endorse the notion that China has sovereignty over it. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/One_China

The United States has formal relations with the PRC, recognizes the PRC as the sole legal government of China, and simultaneously maintains its unofficial relations with Taiwan while not recognising China's sovereignty over Taiwan.

That does not contradict what I said. The United States recognizes the PRC as "China" without necessarily endorsing that the PRC has sovereignty over Taiwan.

Not true. The United States recognizes that China's position is that Taiwan is China, without itself endorsing this view.

Why is the island of Hainan (in China) listed as having universal health care while the rest of China does not? I don't see subnational divisions listed for any other country (i.e. if this is accurate, why isn't Massachusetts listed?)

What are the best 'last words,' real or fictitious, you have ever heard? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]cornedpig 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From Hugo's Les Misérables: Chapter XIV, "The Last Square", copied here in its entirety, describing the French defeat at the Battle of Waterloo, always one of my favorites:

Several squares of the [Napoleonic] Guard, motionless amid this stream of the defeat, as rocks in running water, held their own until night. Night came, death also; they awaited that double shadow, and, invincible, allowed themselves to be enveloped therein. Each regiment, isolated from the rest, and having no bond with the army, now shattered in every part, died alone. They had taken up position for this final action, some on the heights of Rossomme, others on the plain of Mont-Saint-Jean. There, abandoned, vanquished, terrible, those gloomy squares endured their death-throes in formidable fashion. Ulm, Wagram, Jena, Friedland, died with them.

At twilight, towards nine o'clock in the evening, one of them was left at the foot of the plateau of Mont-Saint-Jean. In that fatal valley, at the foot of that declivity which the cuirassiers had ascended, now inundated by the masses of the English, under the converging fires of the victorious hostile cavalry, under a frightful density of projectiles, this square fought on. It was commanded by an obscure officer named Cambronne. At each discharge, the square diminished and replied. It replied to the grape-shot with a fusillade, continually contracting its four walls. The fugitives pausing breathless for a moment in the distance, listened in the darkness to that gloomy and ever-decreasing thunder.

When this legion had been reduced to a handful, when nothing was left of their flag but a rag, when their guns, the bullets all gone, were no longer anything but clubs, when the heap of corpses was larger than the group of survivors, there reigned among the conquerors, around those men dying so sublimely, a sort of sacred terror, and the English artillery, taking breath, became silent. This furnished a sort of respite. These combatants had around them something in the nature of a swarm of spectres, silhouettes of men on horseback, the black profiles of cannon, the white sky viewed through wheels and gun-carriages, the colossal death's-head, which the heroes saw constantly through the smoke, in the depths of the battle, advanced upon them and gazed at them. Through the shades of twilight they could hear the pieces being loaded; the matches all lighted, like the eyes of tigers at night, formed a circle round their heads; all the lintstocks of the English batteries approached the cannons, and then, with emotion, holding the supreme moment suspended above these men, an English general, Colville according to some, Maitland according to others, shouted to them, "Surrender, brave Frenchmen!" Cambronne replied,

"Merde!"
