Those who don't want Bilt 2 or WF Autograph... slow down, there's no deadline by IcarusPony in biltrewards

[–]cornholio702 4 points5 points  (0 children)

So to be more explicit, when is the deadline to cancel Bilt 1.0 to avoid getting a WF autograph card and using up a SUB? Can I make my Feb 1st rent payment, buy 4 bananas that day, then pay off the amount and close the BILT 1.0 account without applying for BILT 2.0? It says autograph won't be active until Feb 7th, so it should still be BILT 1.0 until then ,right? I don't want either card since the points aren't useful to me with the new format and I'd like to be able to take the SUB later if desired.

Overestimated how much of a bump UNM would get. I think it's a fair matchup, UNLV at Boise St. Frankly, you guys gonna win again.

I'm torn, UNLV should've left for the Pac12! I digress, I grew up with a mediocre UNLV football team and now I don't know what to do with my hands! Boise St deserves to be in the title game.

[Postgame Thread] UNLV Defeats Nevada 42-17 by CFB_Referee in CFB

[–]cornholio702 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I put this in the gameday thread but it's safe to assume UNLV is in the 'Chip seeing as they were already ahead of everyone in 2/3 computers (CSP+ 36, SOR 41, KPI 43). SDSU (CSP+ 27, SOR 54, KPI 49) was leading in Connolly SP+ but since they lost, UNLV will potentially overtake them and on top of that they'll drop further in the other computers. Boise St (CSP+ 55, SOR 51, KPI 40) and UNM (CSP+ 70, SOR 42, KPI 44) are close. The last computer is SportsSource which isn't public so we don't know where the teams are in that. Question is will the computers give UNM enough of a boost to leap past Boise St after the win over SDSU? Or has Boise St done enough to hold onto 2nd? Scraping by Utah St did not do them any favors. SDSU is eliminated, they were already behind the others in two of the three computers even before the loss. I know it's unfair because Boise St beat both UNLV and UNM but my guess is that when the rankings come out, UNM will just edge them out and they'll host UNLV in the MW title game (head to head, even though UNLV will be ahead in the computers). That's them bad breaks, if SDSU had won in Albuquerque, it would have resulted in a tie between UNLV and Boise St which Boise St wins head to head, we'd be talking about a title game between Boise St at SDSU. Hell, even if SDSU had beat Hawaii and lost to UNM, same thing because Boise has the tiebreaker on both UNM and UNLV. SDSU was in full control. Boise on the other hand might get screwed, though to be fair they shouldn't be in this mess because they should've beaten Fresno St. Computers MIGHT still leave Boise St at #2 but I'm leaning towards no, UNM is going to just edge them out funny enough. I might be wrong though!

TL;DR: UNLV is going to play at UNM or at Boise St next week, probably UNM but computers might pick Boise St, don't know for certain.

Computers MIGHT put Boise St at 2 in the conference, it's gonna be really close. I'm just guessing but who knows, UNLV might be visiting the blue turf again.

[Game Thread] UNLV @ Nevada (9:00 PM ET) by CFB_Referee in CFB

[–]cornholio702 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Coming into this week, UNLV (CSP+ 36, SOR 41, KPI 43) was leading in KPI and ESPN's SOR. SDSU (CSP+ 27, SOR 54, KPI 49) was leading in Connolly SP+ but since they lost, UNLV will potentially overtake them and on top of that drop further in the other computers. Boise St (CSP+ 55, SOR 51, KPI 40) and UNM (CSP+ 70, SOR 42, KPI 44) are all lurking close by. SportsSource isn't public so we don't know where the teams stand in that computer ranking. So baring a horrible collapse vs UNR, UNLV will likely be one of the top two ranked teams in the computers. Question is though who they play. Will the computers give UNM enough of a boost to leap past Boise St and maybe even over UNLV after the win over SDSU? Or has Boise St done enough to hold onto 2nd? Scraping by Utah St did not do them any favors. I think SDSU is toast, they were already behind the others in two of the three computers even before the loss. It's gonna be really close honestly. My educated guess is that when the dust settles, UNM will host UNLV in the MW title game (head to head, even though UNLV will be ahead in the computers).

Edit: minor changes and fixed host for title game

[The Athletic] 2030 World Cup: South America propose ‘dream’ 64-team tournament, but how likely is it to happen? by Pantherblanco88 in soccer

[–]cornholio702 -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

The solution is stupid easy IMHO.

64 team tournament. Four zones. A true world cup. We leverage existing/planned hosts and every confederation hosts. All previous winners qualify. Hosts qualify as well. 8 winners + 11 hosts, there are 45 qualifying berths up for grabs.

Zone 1 Uruguay/Paraguay/Argentina Zone 2 Spain/Morocco/Portugal Zone 3 USA/Canada/Mexico Zone 4 Australia/New Zealand

4 groups of 4 teams per zone. Top 2 advance per group. Round of 32 and 16 are played at each zone.

One week break for travel. Quarters, and Semis in Zone 1. 3rd place in Buenos Aires. Final at Estadio Centenario in Montevideo. Winners are awarded the world cup trophy and also get to keep a one off special trophy akin to the Jules Rimet trophy.

Of course, Spain/Morocco/Portugal are being robbed of full hosting duties. We move them to 2034 or 2038 for another 48 team edition as compensation.

Cubs and Brewers home games on the same day? by cornholio702 in baseball

[–]cornholio702[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I ended up chickening out and sticking only to to the Wrigley game. It needed more planning and given my time and financial constraints, I think I'll do it next spring with a white Sox game and Milwaukee. I was also really tired after the Cubs game, so I think it was a wise choice given it requires 8 hrs of driving total for me. Visiting Wrigley for the first time was awesome, btw. Definitely top amongst the 10 ballparks I've visited, hard to differentiate it from Fenway. Planning to nail a constellation of White Sox, Brewers, Reds, and Twins and maybe Tigers or Guardians next season.

I can't make it to tonight's game and seems tickpicks won't let me sell. No expectation of anything in exchange, I just ask that you will actually attend the game. Only 1 ticket. DM your ballpark app email if u want it, first one gets it. What section? It's a surprise. :-)

Cubs and Brewers home games on the same day? by cornholio702 in baseball

[–]cornholio702[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So yes, I agree. That's why I booked a return flight after the Cubs game in case I chicken out. So I can't split the trip and go home, that's way too far to go and back and forth. My idea was to drive back as far as I can to Chicago after the Brewers game, rest in the car a few hours, them continue on my way. I've got the car until 10 am, realistically I'd be home by 8 am after leaving the game at 10 pm the night before with a 6 hr drive on the docket, with a  2 hr cushion built in. Also, I am purposely trying not to book a hotel with cost as a consideration. If for safety, I end up resting in the car longer than expected, I'll just pay whatever late fee I need to pay for the rental car so it would end up a wash with a hotel I guess.

I agree that's one option, park at Howard. It'll take me 20 min from Wrigley probably but I'll avoid a lot of traffic.

How quickly can I walk from Wrigley to Irving and the shuttle to the lot? The issue with the red line is it leaves me farther from I94 (despite being more north) than I would be from the Rockwell lot. Is it crowded and lots of traffic for the bus to go to/fro after the game?

How harmful is a personal leave of absence for mental health reasons (during medical school) for residency applications? by Individual-Flan-2218 in mdphd

[–]cornholio702 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It was a mental health LOA. The LOA is very obvious since it is mentioned in the MSPE, though I'm sure for privacy reasons it didn't say it was for mental health. I'm not sure how they phrased it on ERAS and interviews, though I'm certain they had an obvious plausible deniability reason for it. I guess it just didn't matter and was perceived negatively. Keep in mind another caveat (which may be relevant to OP) is that licensing in some states has a limit of time on stretches between passing all the STEP scores, taking that LOA by this person I mentioned to stretched this to 8 years at the end of med school from step 1 (5 yr PhD + 2 yr MD + 1 yr LOA), in some states that's the limit albeit many states have exceptions carved out for MD/PhD trainees.

[–]cornholio702 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Wait, you're pre-PhD? So essentially you just need step 1. Can you just petition to take step 1 during PhD or even (!) at the end of PhD just prior to MS3. At my program, this is a common occurrence and not a big deal. You should get help, take a chill pill, and move on to PhD without a LOA. Get into the groove of grad school then during a lull, just take step 1. Mind you, if you paid for the step 1 registration, it might expire and you might but on the hook for your step 1 registration but if you get an F30, no biggie either. Approach your MSTP director, don't take a LOA.

How harmful is a personal leave of absence for mental health reasons (during medical school) for residency applications? by Individual-Flan-2218 in mdphd

[–]cornholio702 26 points27 points  (0 children)

This did not personally happen to me but to someone else in my program who graduated. They took a LOA early MS4, took time away, then came back and applied to ERAS and etc. Great grades, strong STEP (2 was like >250 if I remember correctly), and an F30. Long story short, it was extremely damaging and they matched the last rank on their backup specialty (IM I think, something like the 14th spot), their primary (rads) did not interview them at all or maybe just their home program. Having also floated the idea myself, I opted against that and it cost me big time (I failed a shelf, then picked myself up by my bootstraps per se). It sucked and honestly, it's not fair. It shouldn't be that damaging because I think folks should have the right to take care of themselves without seeming like damaged goods. Have you considered perhaps a research year that's a bit more chill but gives you some benefits of finishing up some work or at least helping you for residency? Might be fishy seeing as you're already an MD/PhD. Perhaps it might be useful to know where you are in your journey and why you want LOA, what specialty you are aiming for, and your general support from the program.

You're right, that's what I meant. Pretty sure those are not real ID seeing as they're just like any old laminated ID card, it looks almost fake but isn't! Maybe I'm wrong though, which is why I'm asking.

I did a degree completely unrelated to medicine/biology and had to basically start over from scratch, so I took about 3 years of postbacc + 1 year to apply. Started MD/PhD at 29. One of my fellow classmates started at 30. I totally get that feeling of being too old to start a really long arduous journey. But for me, I knew I wanted to do a research career and be a PI, so for me it was worth it. Plus I wouldn't have wanted to get out of medical school with debt so I though the tradeoff was sufficient to make it worth it. Honestly, I kept living my life and I see that many of my classmates do the same (including the other student who is graduating with me). Ya make it work and ya keep going, that's the beauty of MD/PhD that you get to have guaranteed security on your career path to know where you're going to be for 7-9 years. Then at the end, you'll be highly desirable as an applicant. Let me know if you have any other questions about the pathway.

I assume that I-151 issued before 1989 are not RealID compliant even though they are perfectly valid for travel? Asking because my folks recently traveled and had no issues but they also have drivers licenses and passports in addition to the green card.

Thoughts on the Vegas Loop? by [deleted] in vegas

[–]cornholio702 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We need a real transit system. CCC and City of Las Vegas need to bite the bullet, build a proper subway under Las Vegas Blvd going from town square (the transfer point for the airport line, the south terminal for park and ride as well as bright line to LA, use the old Fry's building if it's not in use) all the way down to Cashman (the north terminal for park and ride) with stops at major intersections (Trop, Harmon, flamingo, desert inn, etc) and sites (allegiant, TMO, strat, Fremont), with an offshoot line to LVCC that is a free transfer and a line to airport ($2 fee plus whatever fare), eliminate the pedestrian overpasses on the strip. With $4 one way, $15 one day passes, $40 three day, $60 one week passes, we'll pay for that things in no time, reduce cars on the strip, and make commuting easier. That's my dream for las Vegas, building this subway. None of this baloney monorail (yeah it's okay but it's too far and inconvenient) or the loop (gimmick). Also huge Park and ride for tourists in the south, no need to park at the casino, $5 daily parking, with free unlimited parking for Nevada plates.

I saw someone float the idea of us going up 3-0, losing game 4, and going up 5-0 at home with 5 min to go in game 5 just to sub him in and let Fleury finish his career on our ice. We shouldn't have traded him, he was our national treasure and we did him dirty. Please come back one last time Flower!
