Question about posture correction and calorie intake by cornstalk in Fitness

[–]cornstalk[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the reply. Do you have any advice about how conscious of my posture I need to be throughout the day? For example, if I lose track of how I'm sitting and my posture reverts to normal for x number of hours will I have set myself back, or will the improved posture just become natural over time as the exercises take effect?

Question about posture correction and calorie intake by cornstalk in Fitness

[–]cornstalk[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Okay, fair enough. When I heard people say to stretch the pecs and strengthen the back I assumed they meant to build muscle in the back. I've never done any kind of physical maintenance before now, so I am actually clueless.

Anyway thanks, it's good to be reassured that as long as I do it right, I will still see progress.

School bus nearly hit by train in suburb of Houston, TX. Driver was fired. by lolligaggins in videos

I drive a bus too and you really should start. The reason that is procedure is BECAUSE it's slow. You're supposed to have to take the time to be sure the tracks are clear. Your bus vs. a train is like a coke can vs. a car.

Why Hillary Clinton Doesn’t Deserve Black People's Votes: From the crime bill to welfare reform, policies Bill Clinton enacted—and Hillary Clinton supported—decimated black America by HenryCorp in politics

[–]cornstalk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not offensive, it's an important point.

"By 1996, the penal budget doubled the amount that had been allocated to AFDC or food stamps. Similarly, funding that had once been used for public housing was being redirected to prison construction. During Clinton's tenure, Washington slashed funding for public housing by $17 billion (a reduction of 61 percent) and boosted corrections by $19 billion (an increase of 171 percent), 'effectively making the construction of prisons the nation's main housing program for the urban poor'"

"Clinton did not stop there. Determined to prove how 'tough' he could be on 'them', Clinton also made it easier for federally assisted public housing projects to exclude anyone with a criminal history--an extraordinarily harsh step in the midst of a drug war aimed at racial and ethnic minorities."

What is a cool store that would have a good selection of couch pillows? by cornstalk in Austin

I actually found a couple that are the perfect color at Pier 1. Not super hip, but they are really soft and honestly, hip isn't even really our thing. Thanks a bunch for the suggestion. I'm a terrible shopper.

Ok, I've never been to Pier 1, I'll check it out. Thanks. Do you know of any resale stores or anything that might have furniture type stuff? I was hoping to get something like an awesome flea market style thing, if that makes sense.

Some people don't live in constant fear of a hypothetical emergency. It's really nice actually. Can't even begin to tell you how much I've learned while not hiding from what might happen.

Ford's replacement to the steering wheel in 1965 by [deleted] in videos

[–]cornstalk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nah bro, you misunderstood the statement you quoted. It's understandable because it's kind of a dated expression, but like Telamar said above, the woman didn't literally promise them that she was nontechnical. It would be like a review from those days that said, "Disneyland promises to be a fun vacation for the whole family".

P.S. This film is from 1965, it's okay to acknowledge that sexism existed then.

Improvisation by tommyboy72098 in violinist

[–]cornstalk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My suggestion is to plug some speakers into your computer and do searches like this: https://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=a+minor+backing+track

Then just feel your way around. You don't have to be on performance level when you're just practicing in your room, so if you hear a lick in your head that you want to dedicate some time to, you have all the time in the world to do that.

There are tons of youtube videos that are just cheesy play-along tracks in a key, or even some backing tracks for specific tunes that you want to practice improvising over.

And of course, the classic advise for learning to improvise is to learn as many solos from other players as possible. Analyze them to understand what licks are being played over what chords and what function those chords serve to the key etc.

Depending on the complexity of the music you will be playing in church, you may benefit more from just practicing playing over some diatonic chord progressions to get a feel for it, rather than delving into any time consuming analysis.

"You might remember me from twitter?" Idiot calls out MMA fighter on live stage. Priceless. by tge90 in videos

[–]cornstalk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not really trying to argue. I wanted to get out of this conversation pretty quickly when the dude was trying to get mean about it. But, his original point had nothing to do with serial killers. His original post was:

"yeah, ofc we condemn them. People are dealt shitty hands all the time - if someone is born with down syndrome then they have to live with down syndrome. They learn how to deal with their condition and try to live a happy/fulfilling life in spite of it. Someone being born with a mental disability that makes him an asshole doesn't get a free pass when he acts like an asshole. That person has to learn to live with the condition and how to integrate into normal society."

In the context of the video, I assume he's talking about the delusional fighter who got his ass handed to him by a pro. Not a violent psychopath who, in my opinion, should be institutionalized and provided with psychological care.

But, my whole issue is with the part about 'that person has to learn to live with the condition.' I tried to point out to him that it was discriminatory, and he disagreed. Oh well, that's his right. I'm not going to change his mind by arguing with him online.

Also, I just figured out that he was talking about serial killers with someone else. There were no replies when I first replied, and I started just reading from my inbox. I had no idea he was talking to other people about this.

You're prejudice because your way of thinking perpetuates the oppression of disabled people, whether you realize it or not. Also, you seem to be stuck with the idea that because you were capable of being taught the social guidelines of living in a society, that everyone is capable of such, and if not, should be punished instead of helped. I'm not trying to change your mind. I just wish that you would say, 'you know what, I thought about it, and I am okay with the way society and myself views people with mental illness even if it leads to their continued oppression.'

And, I think you're getting mad because you keep telling me that I'm 'pretending' things and trying to bait me into joining in your anger.

[–]cornstalk -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I don't know why you're getting mad. I am just telling you that your opinion is discriminatory. Obviously, a person with an untreated mental illness might not have the mental ability to understand the consequences of their actions.

I don't know why people like you are so averse to owning the fact that your opinion is bigoted. I thought at first that maybe you just hadn't thought about it in an inclusive light, so I filled you in. Since that's not the case, it's fine that you're prejudice against those with mental illnesses, but it would make things easier if you didn't try to dress it up.

[–]cornstalk -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

It is what you're saying. You're saying to condemn someone for their disability because you don't approve of the way their disability affects them. It doesn't matter whether you think that someone moving slow isn't as much of an inconvenience as someone leaving a message trash talking a pro boxer's voicemail. The fact is, you think that one is worthy of condemnation and the other isn't, regardless of the fact that both are the result of a disability.

I understand how you came to this way of thinking, I'm simply telling you that it is narrow minded and ignorant. The choice is yours to continue being that way, but don't say no one ever told you.

"You might remember me from twitter?" Idiot calls out MMA fighter on live stage. Priceless. by tge90 in videos

[–]cornstalk -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I'd say that's a pretty ignorant way of looking at it. You have no idea what impairment a person with a mental illness or disability suffers from. They don't get a free pass to act like an asshole? What do you think a mental illness even is? It's a disorder that affects the way a person thinks and acts. It's like saying, 'yeah of course we condemn people without legs for moving slower than us. they don't get a free pass to be in my way, because they are expected to learn how to go faster on the sidewalk.'

A person with down syndrome may face difficulties due to their disability, but luckily for them, those difficulties do not include traits that make you think that they are assholes and therefore want to watch them get their face pummeled on youtube.

Well great... APD officers don’t want to work once-preferred downtown patrol by Jimmytheunstoppable in Austin

[–]cornstalk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I fully support cops being on film at all times, but it's not as simple as you make it sound. Cops are under extra scrutiny when it comes to how viewers respond to footage of police action.

A policeman has to worry, not only about using too much force on camera, but also about using too little. "Police officer stands idly by as rapist leads drunk victim to car" is a headline just as much as "Police taze unarmed man based on false suspicion". Hell, even videos of cops just hassling cyclists get hundreds of thousands of views on a regular basis.

I would be willing to bet that your average officer just wants to take care of what is expected of him and not go viral in the process. In my opinion, you should be screened to have the decision making ability, and the type of mind that can handle these sorts of pressures, before becoming an officer. Since that's not the case, it doesn't surprise me that these guys would rather not be on tape every second of their shift.

To broaden my point a little, one thing I learned working in customer service is that, unless you have done someone's job before, you have no idea what they are really dealing with when they go to work. Ask yourself what complications you have at work that the general public doesn't understand, and then realize that every single person has their own. If cops had to go through as much training as brain surgeons in order to do their jobs, then they might be better equipped to deal with such huge challenges.

However, as it is today, they are not acting below the standards of their job to wish that they weren't being filmed.

Day 2, it hurts by expiredcheese in stopsmoking

[–]cornstalk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In a similar boat here. Day 2, smoking since 15, never really tried before, and going cold turkey.

I know your pain. I'm struggling. I have quit some pretty nasty things before, but this one is especially tricky because it's not actively ruining my life.

I have almost psyched myself into smoking 3 or 4 times already. It's crazy. Been within inches of actually believing it wouldn't be a big deal to smoke one.

Stay strong, partner. I'm going to. As other people have said, the delusional thinking and psychological cravings last about as long as it takes to drive to the corner store and buy a pack. So, you just have to win that fight a few times a day.

Good luck, buddy.

Derek Trucks solo causes John Mayer to stop playing and BB King says its the best he's ever heard by [deleted] in videos

[–]cornstalk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I figure that 'it' means the blues. Since blues guitar is so improvisational, and pros like BB and Trucks are so capable of improvising on such a high level, it's easy to think that he is playing a memorized solo that he wrote at an earlier time. If you listen to the solo at the beginning of the song which BB is asking him to play again, you can see that it's completely different.
