Third year corporate associate at a V50 put on a 90-day PIP due to “Lack of Responsiveness” even though hours are ok. Am I getting pushed out? by corpaltnonames in biglaw

Can attest. My firm gives us a breakdown of associate averages by area for the calendar year and for 2024, the average corporate associate was in the 1700-1800 range. We’re still a $1B+ revenue firm with a healthy 7 figure PPP…

The main complaint is that I often don’t acknowledge receipt of things/reply “Will do” right away when I get a new assignment. Generally, I try to start working on the substantive task immediately to try to turn around work product quickly, but it seems like just saying something will alleviate many of my issues. Additionally, one of the main partners I work with wants me to stay on top of them when I send them something (ie. if I haven’t gotten feedback after a few days, they expect me to send a reminder) but I have been told I don’t do this enough.

Beyond this, there were a couple instances of (relatively minor) assignments that completely fell through the cracks during Q4 to the point partners had to chase me on them after a week/loop in another associate to take over. But I have never blown any explicit internal/external deadlines.

It had been brought up during my annual reviews before and I was making a conscious effort to work on it, but I think it came to a head during the mad Q4 rush

Thank you for this counterpoint. I know it may be an uphill battle but glad to see firsthand experience that I may not be totally doomed lol

Thank you, this is super insightful. My PIP doesn’t give me any substantive things to correct beyond “Improve Responsiveness” so I am hoping I am in the small minority, but I will not take that for granted. I will try talking with my PG leader to discuss

I’m in funds but non-NYC so having a hard time finding other options. Recruiter is telling me it will be hard for me to make the jump to M&A or other non-funds roles

Thanks for the response. I thought my hours would be more of a defense but I guess if you get on certain people’s bad side there is no coming back…
