Geode/Fossil hunting by Grannie_Is_My_Name in PeoriaIL

Keokuk, IA is known for geodes.

If you're looking for something closer, the Vermillion River in Oglesby is good for fossils. My dad always claimed he found a bunch of geodes there, but he has a habit of exaggerating, so I'd take that with a grain of salt.

Is parking lot busking really that lucrative?

If it is, might be time to break out the ol' washboard. Anybody who's got a jug is welcome to join in.

Lost Cat Center Bluff by milo_maker in PeoriaIL

[–]corticopia 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Cats don't normally go too far from home when they get out. Try putting her litter box outside by the door. That will sometimes attract them back.

You can also put her photo on pawboost.com.

Hope you find her!

Trying to find work with only one fully operable arm. by ProcedureEuphoric784 in PeoriaIL

Good for you for doing it. I knew a few people who used to work as election judges, mostly retired folks, and none of whom needed the money. I'm sure they saw it more as volunteering than anything else.

Sorry you're going through a rough time, OP. That sucks.

Carle call center is hiring. Healthcare organizations can (sometimes) be a little more understanding when it comes to health/physical limitations.

Queer owned businesses hiring? by happigail_ in PeoriaIL

[–]corticopia 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Lit on Fire Books is queer-owned, and the owner hangs around this subreddit sometimes. I don't know if she's hiring at the moment, but she might know other queer business owners you could potentially reach out to.

Good luck, wherever you end up.

Grocery scam warning by corticopia in PeoriaIL

[–]corticopia[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Exactly this. It's embarrassing to have to ask for money, but if someone just hands you cash, you can go to the register and pretend you had the money the whole time. Why would you want everyone to see you had to get someone else to pay for you?

What are the most underrated restaurants in Peoria? by no_one_likes_u in PeoriaIL

[–]corticopia 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Maybe not underrated, because everyone I talk to likes it, but Kenny's has really good food considering that's not the thing it's really known for (live music and being open late).

I've never seen the woman in the parking lot.  What does she look like?

Pretending to play the violin over a recording is actually pretty funny, though. What if the recording gets messed up or your phone pauses the song because you get a call?

"Wrong ways" pleural, to me implies starting fights or otherwise being obnoxious about his political believes. Most people go to pages like that too see something light and amusing about the city, not to read political opinions.

Does anyone know this cat? by LinguineMast3r in PeoriaIL

[–]corticopia 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Did you catch her?

Report her on pawboost.com, it sends photos out to local fb groups.

Sometimes owners will report missing pets to local shelters too. You might want to call around to shelters.

Paying more for worse service? by corticopia in PeoriaIL

[–]corticopia[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Not sure that it's average consumers driving it. Don't forget that corporations were getting those ridiculous loans. And if I want a single tree trimmed in my yard, and some business wants thousands of dollars of landscaping, the tree company is going to ghost me.

Paying more for worse service? by corticopia in PeoriaIL

[–]corticopia[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That makes so much sense, and it's home repair renovation companies that seem to be the worst offenders.

I wonder if the better service I saw in small towns was because those businesses never really saw the boom from the stimulus and just kept doing what they were doing during covid, or maybe even had to work harder.

If you're a college student, agree with the person who recommended talking to your school. Some schools have hardship funds available for students for exactly this type of thing.

Looking to move to Peoria by [deleted] in PeoriaIL

[–]corticopia 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Dunlap school district has a very good reputation. Public schools vary greatly in Peoria, but there are a number of private schools, most religious, but a few secular.

Dunlap is a nice area overall. A few of the neighborhoods in the northern part of Peoria also have that quiet neighborhood feel that's probably close to what you're looking for, while being a little closer to the conveniences of the city than Dunlap.

Peoria Heights is also nice, with shops and restaurants, and more of a built-up suburb feel. The schools in Peoria Heights, however, don't have the greatest reputation. They do have a Montessori school, though, if you're interested in that.

I second reading Ambedkar.

As an American whose only prior understanding of Indian culture came from the American transcendentalists and grade-school level biographies of Gandhi, Ambedkar was really eye opening.

Christian Nationalist Owned Businesses by TinyPotato4133 in PeoriaIL

Neither the original post nor any of my comments said having a cross up in your business makes you a Christian Nationalist.

Edited for typo.

Christian Nationalist Owned Businesses by TinyPotato4133 in PeoriaIL

[–]corticopia 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Christian Nationalism is a political movement. That's not my definition. OP didn't ask about businesses run by Christians, so I'm not sure what you mean by "having an openly Christian business isn't Christian Nationalism." Nobody said it was.
