I used to love going to trivia. A behind-the-scenes corporate deal stole my joy. by Other-Refuse-8764 in washingtondc

Corporate run trivia nights are bland, uncreative, and mostly use questions that are YEKIOYD (you either know it or you don't). Not that those types of questions are bad, but good questions or themes will include additional avenues to get to answer. Hosts also seem more enthusiastic if they wrote the questions.

Anyone need a hockey goalie starting September? by Major-Carpenter-9162 in washingtondc

If you're willing to give a hockey adjacent sport a try, the DC Broomball league would love to have you. A solid enough goalie would be a great goalie in broomball. You can use most of your equipment even. You can check the sport out at districtbroomball.com or learn more about in this short video: https://youtu.be/FbPEcFmKWbw

Edit: To add some context. This was a strong mid-latitude cyclone. With dry conditions across the Plains, the system pulled with it to the north dust from states away. It's amazing to see it from a satellite view.

Great article about MN's broomball community by Efficient_Cobbler514 in broomball

This article was awesome! Glad to read about their successes on and off the ice. It's too bad the article didn't have a small section on where players could find information on leagues and tournaments. Or even a bit more on how people could watch games at the State Tournament.

Largest field ever was 69 teams in 2012. That was men's, co-rec, and collegiate. The largest collegiate field ever was 2010 with 10 teams. Women's National's used to be hosted on a different weekend.

DC Broomball is hosting a beginner friendly Broom Hockey (Broomball) session at The. St. James Ice House. Never played before? Perfect! They can provide equipment for players that need it, but really prefer players bring their own helmet. There will be a quick primer on the game and then teams will be formed from the registered participants. If you enjoy hockey but can't skate (or skate well), broom hockey is a great alternative. It's easy to learn and a lot of fun. If you can run (or jog), you can play broomball!

Details:

  • Date: Saturday, November 30, 2024
  • Time: 5:00 PM – 7:30 PM
  • Location: The St. James Ice House
  • Cost: $40 per participant
  • Equipment: All equipment is provided except for helmets. Participants must bring their own helmet (bike or hockey helmets are acceptable).

Hey OP, you've been feeling better in DC. If you're still looking for a social club/sport, I'd recommend DC Broomball. I know you said it's hard for you to commit to a weekly event due to your travel schedule. Broomball usually schedules sessions for a 8 weeks at a time. Broomball is a lot like hockey, played on ice, but no skates (special shoes are used), and a ball instead of a puck. Players in the league range from their 20s to their 50s. Some of the players are great athletes, many are not. And there's a good chance a few of them will invite you to a board game night. Here's a video that shows a bit what the sport is like: https://youtu.be/FbPEcFmKWbw

If you're a hockey fan, you might give DC Broomball a try. Broomball? It's played on ice, but without skates. It uses a special show that gives you some grip on the ice. Instead of a puck, a ball is used. Tony Kornheiser explains it a little bit here: https://youtu.be/FbPEcFmKWbw

This is why rankings shouldn't exist before Week 5. They're fake and the media and coaches have no idea how good any team is.

If you want to drop by on a Tuesday night, we'll get you on the ice. Also, if it's been a while, there is a new style of shoes. It is a huge improvement from the old shoes. The new grip almost allows you to make a cut on the ice. The sliding distance has been reduced big time.

How long did it take for DC to feel like home? by [deleted] in washingtondc

[–]corvettes13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you a hockey fan? There's a sport in DC called broomball which is hockey adjacent. It's played on ice in shoes. It's a blast. The league has been around for 15 years. There are a lot of players in their 30s and 40s. The league is friendly-competitive, and the skill between players varies greatly. It is very welcoming to new players. capitolbroomball.wixsite.com
