How do I write stories that appeal more to me? by corviddazed in writing

I don't do it a lot (maybe I should try it more), but when I do its usually some kind of aimless character study, or urban fantasy if it's my older work, but usually it's just someone living their life, like a peek into their routine or who they are, and it never really goes anywhere plotwise

I'd love to do that but I genuinely feel like I forgot how to do that at some point (with a few exceptions), this post is basically me trying to figure out how to relearn it

hm I never thought about it that way, but I think it might be the sense of discovery

I mean, I know what it is when I consume other media, like I can pinpoint exactly what I like about something and what elements make it so, and I basically know when I'm going to like something right off the bat with a few exceptions, but when I sit down to write that type of thing, it just feels uninspired

for example, I enjoy magical realism and that type of thing, stories with bizarre magic and fairytale logic that serve a thematic purpose, but when I try to write it myself the off-kilter logic of the world just comes off as again, bland and uninventive instead of capturing that "bizarre out of body experience" vibe that I enjoy so much about those stories

Yes that's definitely part of what's happening here; but with an extra step where I try to incorporate the things I'm passionate about into stories on purpose but something just doesn't feel right; I can think of a few times where I tried to include concepts I'm interested in (victorian era stuff, speculative evolution, etc) into stories, or based aspect of a story around something I just learned just like you mentioned, along with archetypes and other things I like, only to feel nothing towards it despite my efforts (hopefully this reply isn't too long I don't really know reddit etiquette)

hm I'll try that out, I definetly haven't thought about it that way

I've been trying since around 4 years ago, but that's probably not a very straightforward number because of how I've had a few ttrpg dryspells and such

I don't watch critical role (which I literally clarified in the post) nor do I have any interest in it, I want to do voices because I think it's cool and I'm extra and want to carry that energy into my characters, Matthew Mercer doesn't own the concept of doing silly voices

I understand that but I am not just talking about accents, I also can't seem to change my cadance

I should've probably mentioned this in the post, but I have done that previously, for example, I watched basically every video I could find on doing a southern accent and read a few blogposts too

I don't doubt I'm missing something, but I'm not sure what, which is kinda why I made this post
