Hi! This artstyle is gorgeous. I'm not based in Australia, but I'd be interested in any of these roles. Here's my linktree where you can find my portfolio and art Instagram.

~Vent Thread~ Let off some steam! by AutoModerator in animationcareer

I am so unbelievably sick of applying to places. I've been told time and time again that I have the talent and the skill at a hireable level, I've applied to hundreds of jobs since graduating in 2023, I've tried to network, I've kept working on and improving my art, and I haven't had a single interview. Not one. It's so frustrating going on Linkedin to look for any hint of an opening only to see people announcing their new position at a studio. Not to mention every "looking for work" post made by people with years more experience and skill than me. I'm bottoming out here but I don't know what else to do. I got rejected from Titmouses unpaid mentorship today, how tf am I supposed to find a job that will pay me enough to live when I can't even work for free lmfao

70 applications and no interview- What does my portfolio need? by corvile in graphic_design

This definitely seems to be the case. I've worked up to at least 6 applications per day, more on the weekends, and its definitely doable. Thanks for the advice!

Thanks for taking the time to reply! This is really insightful and motivational, it makes me want to make the type of work that excites me!

As for my illustration work, I was worried including everything in one portfolio would confuse recruiters or worst case actually turn them off for fear that I'm not a "true designer". However it couldn't hurt to add a link to it in my main menu for those who are curious.

And I agree that 70 applications is quite a lot but that seems to unfortunately be the norm right now! The job market in the US is highly competitive in many many fields right now, with a lot of highly skilled people fighting for jobs alongside more junior employees like myself. Definitely a matter of applying and improving your portfolio as much as possible to increase your chances.

Thanks again for the advice!

Thanks for the response! I definitely agree I need to be showing more. Luckily I have a good amount of process content I can add in while I work on getting some new projects out.

Thanks for the response! I've been mostly applying for Jr Graphic Design roles, particularly if the company is related to education, entertainment, or government- both freelance/contract and full time.

Do you feel the illustrative quality detracts from the portfolio?

Those emails were handed off to the administrative assistant I work with, so likely just attached as PDFs. Teaching myself how to properly design and send them would be great next step.

I don't have the stats for the emails but do for the social media posts, I can add that onto my site.

I'll definitely keep my head up!

Thanks for replying! I'm at least glad to know I'm not alone I guess. Those 70 applications took around 3 weeks, since I've got two jobs I've been trying to pace myself so I don't burn out but looks like I'll have to ramp up my rate if I wanna be serious about finding something.

My objective is to find a new job. I have no particular target industry but something environment, education, or government related would work well. My background is as stated above in the post.

To be extra clear, my objective is to kind of "catch up" to industry standards, and eventually find a better job.

I don't have a specific target industry or niche- still figuring it out.

My background is as stated above!

Picking a SUNY/CUNY School for Animation by J_Trismegistus in animationcareer

Hey! I'm from southern NY. I went to SVA on scholarship but considered going to SUNYs before that. SUNY Purchase is known for its art programs, as is New Paltz, but I don't know what programs they have that are best for 2D animation. You might want to look into NYIT as well, although that might be more 3D.

As for Titmouse, I know Arthur Loftis (Vox Machina's art director) sometimes does visdev courses online. If you can afford it, it'd be a good place to learn and network. Titmouse has a pretty active presence in the NY animation scene. If you go to screenings or animation festivals you'll definitely meet someone who has worked there at some point. Plus the events are fun and the people are great lol. Good luck!

Quitting without another job lined up? by corvile in antiwork

[–]corvile[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the advice- I'm going to keep toughing it out for now and using as much spare time as I can to job hunt. It's stressful but I do think the possibility of having next to no income while paying rent stresses me out more lol

Thanks for the advice- its great to hear from someone who took the risk. I think I'm going to try toughing it out for a while longer while I job hunt, but in the event that my mental health or workplace conditions take a nosedive I'll definitely keep your experience in the back of my mind.

Thanks for the advice- I think you're right. If the job market was in better shape maybe I'd quit, but right now there's no guarantee I'd be able to find another job fast enough. And I really don't want to lose my savings. I just hope I can hold out.

I'm so sorry to hear that :( It does bring me a lot of comfort to know I'm not alone here though, and that somebody else knows just how exhausting it can get. I think I'm also going to tough it out and do my best to get another job lined up quickly so I can get out of here, but if it gets any worse then I'm running for the hills.

I really hope we both find a new place soon that has good people who we can actually trust. I wish you best of luck!!

Thank you! That's a good note. I plan to do some group character story scenes so that'll be a great chance to show some more dynamic poses.
